Reform During the Enlightenment Slavery became a very bad issue so as a result many Americans joined a reform to end slavery.

The main idea of the abolition was to outlaw slavery.

Some people supported the reform while others were against it.

Slave owners tried to get their state legislators to tighten control on the African Americans This is known as slave codes.

Key People

William Lloyd Garrison who was against slavery made speeches to people explaining that the Constitution should be burnt because it supported slavery.

Frederick Douglas- Born into slavery, escaped his master and travelled north. He ended up creating the North Sky slavery newspaper.

Nat Turner- Born into slavery and was a leader to other slaves. He led to the kill of about 60 white plantation owners, in retaliation they were hanged and 200 slaves were also killed. This made slave owners defend slavery.

Results/ Outcome of Reform

Eventually William Lloyd Garrison was arrested for his outspoken views.

Garrison and Douglass tried to work together but had to many differences regarding the Constitution.

Belief in the abolition led to denominations such as the Free Methodist Church.
