TÂRGOVIŞTE, OUR CITY

* is the capital city of the Dâmboviţa County. * is situated on the right bank of the Ialomiţa river, at 80 km far from Bucharest, the capital city of Romania. * has about 90,000 inhabitants.

* first attested in 1396, in J. Schiltberger’s “Travel Accounts”, was the capital city of Wallachia voivodship between 1396 and 1714, when the Royal Court, "Curtea Domnească“, and Chindia Tower, “Turnul Chindia”, were built. * is called “the city of 33 voivods (kings)”

Chindia Tower

is the landmark, the symbol of our city. It was built within the Royal Court in medieval times by Vlad Ţepeş, Vlad the Impaler, known as Dracula due to Bram Stoker’s novel.

He was one of the

princes who ruled

Wallachia in the

medieval times. The

Royal Court in Târgoviște was his

headquarters.

He fought lots of

battles against the

Ottomans.

Our school name is MATEI BASARAB.

It’s a public primary and middle

school teaching pupils aged 5 to 15.

MATEI BASARAB

was an important prince ruling

the country (1632–1654) while

Târgovişte was the capital city.

He was an enlightened ruler,

and is noted for introducing

the printing press to Wallachia

(1634) and creating the first

Wallachian code of laws as well as

patronizing art and religion (founder of

the first upper school in Wallachia).
