Dear

Math and literacy are the “gatekeepers of citizenship” and the deadline for learning is alarmingly early. A U.S. Department of Education study concluded that students without appropriate math and reading skills by the sixth grade are unlikely to acquire them by the end of high school. Conversely, students reading proficiently and who score in the top quartile in math by the fifth grade are 78% more likely to enroll at a four-year college.

To help students reach these critical math and literacy milestones, we created SMART Saturdays, an innovative educational enhancement program for third, fourth, and fifth grade boys.

Urban Ed Academy (UEA) is a 501(c)3 non profit organization that offers year-round educational enhancement opportunities after school and on Saturdays for boys throughout the Bay Area. The innovative strategies of the SMART program builds academic proficiency and targets areas identified as most critical for the academic success for boys.

When I think about SMART Saturdays, I think about Jonathan. Jonathan was a fourth grader reading at a second grade level. His reading and science scores placed him at the bottom 25th percentile of students in his grade. He spent more time in the principal’s office than the classroom. Like so many other boys, he was on a dangerous trajectory. A child with little or no connection to school becomes a high school dropout, who is likely to be out of work, living in poverty, or worse. If he is a young man of color, he is more likely to go to prison instead of college. We know this and it can seem so hopeless, but it’s not.

There are solutions! SMART Saturdays helped Jonathan. He is reading at his appropriate grade level, he is excited about learning, he has an interest in engineering, and he wants to build solar powered bicycles.

Urban Ed Academy is an organization that is helping hundreds of boys just like Jonathan, find the support they need to succeed in school and in life.

For these reasons, please consider making a donation to support The Urban Ed Academy - SMART Saturdays. A $500 donation will help to expand UEA’s programs to serve more students in the 2015-16 school year. If UEA raises $10,000 by the end of September 2015, we will be able to enroll an additional 100 boys, and train additional volunteers.

SMART Saturdays: STUDY --- MOVE --- ACHIEVE --- RESPOND --- TRANSITION

Through the establishment of our umbrella program “SMART Saturdays”, UEA offsets the 200 educational hours lost due to absenteeism and disciplinary action, and transforms young boys into eager learners who are ready to excel.

SMART Saturdays provides a culturally relevant curriculum over 42-Saturdays each year to bring an additional 330 hours of learning to each boy’s educational experience.

As a result, more than 85% of our participants:

I will recommend a contribution through a donor advised fundI’d like to make a gift of securities Gifts of stock can be transferred - Please contact us at 415-330-1015My employer will match this gift! I have submitted a match request to my company

UEA’s strategies allow youth to build on assets and provide opportunities for them to act as partners and leaders. We work with local schools, businesses, and CBOs to foster positive experiences for our boys. UEA is committed to developing strong youth-adult relationships at home and in school.

But we can’t do it without your help! Too many young men find themselves on the fringes of American society simply because they lack solid educational and social foundations. The UEA SMART Saturdays program is changing this pattern for Jonathan and, with your help, we can change it for hundreds of other boys.

We won’t mince words. We need more individual giving to serve more boys and their families. If you believe, like we do, that the UEA boys are our next generation of visionaries, leaders, scholars, entrepreneurs, and community stewards then please contribute now.

At UEA, we believe in what Frederick Douglass said more than 150 years ago:

“It is easier to build strong children than to fix broken men.”

For the sake of our future, please help.

Warm Regards,

Bobby YearbyBoard President
