What is Universal Design and Aging In Place?

AARP reports that 90 percent of seniors want to stay in their own homes as

long as possible — including 82 percent who want to stay there even if they

need day-to-day assistance or ongoing health care — after retirement.

Universal Design

• Products & environments to be used by all, regardless of age and ability

• Ex. Sidewalk ramps, kitchen counters of varying heights

Aging-in-Place

• Ability to live in one’s

own home for as long as

possible

• Includes UD, health and

wellness monitoring and

more.

Family Occupational Therapist Home Remodeler

• Liaison between families and contractors.

• Recommend and implement strategies in every

room of home to help patient complete ADL’s

independently, effectively and efficiently

Family

• Communicate patient’s normal routine, likes,

dislikes, personality, etc.

• Investigate community resources and programs

to help streamline process (money, products,

etc.)

• Research contractors for experience, licensing,

insurance, etc.

Home Remodeler

• Make sure process is as un-interruptive of

daily life as possible.

• Answer housing questions

• Think of aesthetic design as well as strategies

for creating effective spaces

Common Renovations

• Higher toilets in bathroom

• Handheld shower heads

• Grab bars in hallways and restrooms

• Wider doorways

• 1st floor room additions

• Lowering sinks and counters in kitchen

• Design spaces to accommodate seated activities, such as lower cabinets

• Ramps

• In-law/care person quarters

• Brighter lighting

• Remove carpet

Timeline of A Project

• OT / Family Decide Something is Needed

• 1st Appt - review issues, ideas, budget, etc.

• 2nd Appt / Contract Signed / Down Payment Due

• Pre-Construction (if applicable): plans, permits, material ordering

• Considerations: How many days until completion? How will the family

access the home during construction? How will the crew access the work

area?

Timeline of A Project continued

• Construction (if applicable): demolition, digging, footers,

framing, drywall, railings, plumbing. Electrical, HVAC, etc..

inspections; payments throughout completion of project stages

• Post-Construction (if applicable): walk thru, final payments,

inspections, maintenance, warranty work
