Encouraging a modal shift to active travel modes will make London greener and healthier as a city to live in. The Mayor’s Transport Strategy set the ambition to have 80% of all journeys in the capital done by walking, cycling or public transport by 2041, while TFL’s Liveable Neighbourhoods programme is giving boroughs the opportunity to create streets and places that encourage walking, cycling and the use of public transport.

What are current successful strategies that can be shared and applied across London? What is the role of new ser-vices such as dockless bike sharing schemes in making cycling more acces-sible? What are the challenges in regu-lating, funding and managing them?

This annual event brings together urban designers, planners, local authorities and other professionals to address how active travel can be implemented across the capital. Presentations will cover strategies for healthier neighbourhoods, cycling infrastructure, streets design and new mobility.

Phil Berczuk Director, Head of Design, Steer

Phil has over 30 years’ experience with Steer and leads the firm’s design practice supporting our clients to move from car-centric planning and design to a more compact, resilient and sustainable development model through measures such as walk and cycle interventions, new mobility, active and healthy streets, placemaking, wayfinding, access controls and parking management – optimising network capacity and improving the end user experience whether for city-wide strategic mobility plans, development masterplans, transport networks or major events. Phil has a detailed understanding of the requirements of cities, mobility systems and end users and applies this to develop user centred design policy, strategy and guidance that enables our international client base to implement, consistent and cost-effective solutions that meet with their short and long-term requirements. @Steer_DfM

As Head of Jacobs’ Cities Solutions, Carlo leads the integrated team of masterplanners and urban experts in London, delivering exemplary projects in the UK and internationally. His role implies thought leadership and participation in the current debate on urban issues, promoting an integrated approach to tackle the global challenges we are facing, identifying opportunities and delivering better cities for all. @jacobsconnects

Jon Little Director, Bespoke Transport Consulting

Jon is an award-winning transport design and engagement consultant and the founder of Bespoke. He specialises in cycling and walking, community involvement in street design, kerbside management, shared and combined mobility. Jon works with a broad range of clients from local authorities and government bodies to architects and larger consultancies. He is best known for his work with Waltham Forest on the delivery of the multi-award winning Mini-Holland programme. Jon led the development of the borough-wide design concept and £27 million bid, the approach to engagement, design guide, cycling vision, behaviour change initiatives and the monitoring framework. Jon is working with cities throughout the country on the development and delivery of a broad spectrum of active travel projects including cycle routes, liveable and low traffic neighbourhoods, active travel and low emission mobility plans for urban environments. @bespokejon

Brian Deegan Design Engineer, Urban Movement

Brian is a design engineer at Urban Movement and is one the country’s leading experts in cycling infrastructure. He is technical advisor to Chris Boardman in Greater Manchester and is Healthy Streets Advisor the Mayor of Leicester. Brian is the co-author of the London Cycling Design Standards and the EU Cycling Strategy and developed the methodology used on the Bee Network Project. He introduced the UK to light segregation and is currently developing methods for protecting cyclists at signalised junctions and providing implied priority for people walking at side roads. @UM_Streets

Fran Graham Campaigns Coordinator, The London Cycling Campaign

The London Cycling Campaign is the voice for cycling in London, and together with our 11,500 members, we campaign for a greener, healthier and happier London, where everyone who wants to cycle, can. With an environmental background, Fran joined LCC in 2017 as the Campaigns Coordinator. She supports the work of LCC’s brilliant local borough groups, as they push for high-quality Dutch style infrastructure, as well as taking a lead in London wide campaigns to triple the mileage of high quality cycle tracks, create Liveable Neighbourhoods, push for safer junctions, make direct vision lorries the norm. @london_cycling

Peter Murray Curator-in-Chief, New London Architecture (NLA)

Peter trained as an architect and was editor of Building Design and RIBA Journal before starting Blueprint Magazine in 1983. He has curated a number of major architectural exhibitions and is President of the global communications consultancy Wordsearch. He is founder of the London Festival of Architecture and is author of various architectural books. He is a Past Master of The Architects’ Company, a visiting professor at IE University in Madrid, Chairman of The London Society and of New London Architecture. @nlalondon @pgsmurray

Sarah Wigglesworth Director, Sarah Wigglesworth Architects

Sarah is director of her London-based architectural practice which she founded in 1994. Her work is acknowledged as a pioneering influence in British Architecture, which focuses on exploring ecological solutions. She writes and speaks about her and the practice’s work and she was granted the title Royal Designer for Industry in 2012 and was awarded an MBE in 2003. @sw_architects

Bruce McVean Strategic Transport Group Manager, City of London Corporation

For over 15 years Bruce’s career has involved exploring and promoting the social, economic and environmental benefits of safe and attractive urban environments and sustainable transport. He leads the team that develops and delivers transport policy and projects in the City of London, helping to ensure the Square Mile remains a great place to live, work, learn and visit. Previous roles include Principal Strategy Planner at Transport for London, Senior Policy Advisor at the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) and Trustee of Living Streets. @cityoflondon

Will Norman Mayor of London’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner

Will is London’s first Walking and Cycling Commissioner, working to deliver the Mayor’s pledges to make walking and cycling safer and easier in the capital. Will was previously Director of Global Partnerships at Nike. He spent more than three years working with not-for-profits, governments, UN agencies and European Institutions to tackle the global inactivity crisis, with a particular focus on getting children more active. Prior to working at Nike, Will was Director of Research at the Young Foundation and also set up a successful social research consultancy. @willnorman

Hamish Stewart Hamish Stewart, Co-Founder, Car-Free Day Community Interest Company

Hamish is a Canadian lawyer by training who has lived in London for the past decade. Car Free Day Community Interest Company is run by volunteers who are committed to championing more efficient traffic-free city centres and active travel. Their work focuses on the urban land use transition opportunity away from empty concrete slabs, with parking and road space currently taking up between 30%-50% of all urban areas. In London, they promote regular car-free days and the opportunity to convert redundant road and parking space across the city to more socially and economically productive uses as public parks, affordable housing and commercial space. With over 8,000 hectares of land devoted to parking alone in London, Car Free Day believes there is a great opportunity to shift land use away from private cars to other, more productive uses. @carfreedayLDN
