Definition Functions Notable projects

Benefits

Distribution networks are under high pressure to meet requirements to convert their conventional static Grids into modern and dynamic Smart Grids. In particular, the increasing occurrence of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) is influencing this trend, as well as the need to improve quality and reliability in MV and LV networks.

New requirements are arising for automation, monitoring control and protection of distribution substations and ring main units (RMUs). These requirements are most suitably supported by consistent and flexible system solutions.

Spain: SmartCity Malaga defines the new energy management model in big cities, allowing 20% savings in energy consumption and avoiding emissions of 6,000 tonnes of CO2 per year from 11,000 domestic clients, 900 SMEs and 300 industrial customers.

SmartCity Malaga has become a world reference, sharing leadership with other similar initiatives in Stockholm, Dubai, Malta, Ohio and Colorado.

Advanced Metering Infrastructure - AMI

Definition Functions Notable projects

Benefits

Electrical utilities are focusing on developing AMI, i.e. Smart Meter and Meter Data Management, to implement demand side management, residential demand response, aggregated control of distributed generation and to serve as the chief mechanism for implementing dynamic pricing solutions.

AMI provides customers with a dynamic electricity tariff and it can help electrical utilities achieve necessary load reductions. This allows distribution system operators (DSO) to optimize essential key processes and to offer new services and data to their customers.

• Power Meter remote control & configuration

• Metering Data Concentration (collection and reporting)

• A, V, kW, kVAr, kWh, kVArh measurement (LV)

• LAN/WAN communications (LV PLC, Wireless)

Spain: Iberdrola STAR: 180,000 customers experience the improvements in quality of supply and reduced incidences in Spain’s largest AMI project.

3,000 Transformer substations and 100,000 PRIME Smart Meters installed until 2014, allow remote meter reading, remote connection and disconnection.

• The architectural solution for AMI includes the Data Concentrator function. This function collects and formats data from all the Smart Meters connected to the transformer

• The proposed solution provides per phase monitoring of demand, with real-time voltage and current data acquisition per LV line. This data enables the detection of losses and the identification of imbalances for power flow optimization. Additionally, load change data enables the identification of LV topologies

• A key feature of the Data Concentrator is to provide cybersecurity.

• Losses detection and estimation• Energy balance calculation

Integration of Distributed Energy Resources - DER Definition ProductsBenefits

The integration of fluctuating Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and Distributed Energy Resources (DER) into today’s distribution networks can result in various challenges for network planning and operation.

On the one hand changing power flows will affect the voltages, which can result in voltages violating the operational steady-state maximum and minimum voltage limits.

On the other hand the addition of DER generation makes the total load exceed the network’s capacity. It causes serious problems in cables, overhead lines and distribution transformers, which makes it necessary to strengthen the networks and to ensure security of supply.
