T A C

Advent makes your journey toward Christmas more meaningful by revealing your deepest longings and

greatest hopes, and teaches you to focus all your desires on Jesus Christ. The readings that you hear in Advent present you with three companions for your journey. They each speak to you about matters of your heart—about your longing, fulfillment and hope. The names of your companions are Isaiah, John the Baptist, and Mary.

Isaiah This great prophet foretold the coming of the promised Messiah and His Kingdom. Isaiah’s words are remembered especially during Advent because of his confident hope that God would restore the faithful remnant of Israel. Isaiah also gives you hope that God can restore your

life with Him.

John the Baptist John announced to the people that Jesus, the Messiah, had finally come and now was the time to change their lives. While some thought John might be the Messiah, he knew clearly that he was only

the messenger and Jesus was the promised one. When you look carefully at your own life, John helps you learn what you must change to more faithfully follow Jesus.

Mary Mary was transformed by God’s grace from the first moment of her existence, which we celebrate on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Then when invited to share in God’s plan, Mary accepted her role as Jesus’ mother. Her willingness to allow God to work in her life is a model for you in a culture that often refuses to acknowledge God and fears to make any commitment.

A PRAYER FOR ADVENT LORD OF HEAVEN and earth, You have come to lead Your people out of darkness into the glorious light of Your Divine Love. Send Your Holy Spirit into our hearts so we may see clearly that we need a Savior. Help us to discover Your saving presence in our world, especially in the needy ones in our families and neighborhoods. In the midst of all our preoccupations, give us gratitude for the many blessings you give us. In Advent may we become evermore certain that our true joy in life is only found in You alone. AMEN.

FROM THE DESK OF MONSIGNOR MATHERS

My Dear Parishioners,

The Holy Season of Advent is a time of new beginnings. This Sunday, the First Sunday of Advent, the Church begins a new Year of Grace. During this year, you will have the opportunity to journey with Jesus from His Birth to His Public Ministry and ultimately, to His Death, Resurrection, and Ascension to the Father. In the process, you can begin again to know Jesus better and to love Him more.

The word “Advent” means “arrival.” During the four weeks before Christmas, you prepare to celebrate the arrival of Jesus, a most unexpected Messiah. He was not born in a palace but in a stable. Only a few people knew of His Birth, until angels announced the unexpected event to some startled shepherds. This child Messiah did not arrive as a conquering king wearing a crown of gold. Instead, He wore a crown of thorns when He died on the Cross for us. And then—in a joyfully unexpected event—He rose from the dead, promising eternal life to those who put their faith in Him.

During the busy Advent Season, as you shop and cook and wrap gifts, remember that Jesus is coming again on a day you do not expect. By God’s grace, and through faith in Jesus’ Name, always be ready to welcome Him. The unexpected Messiah is coming. He is coming into your life. Prepare to receive Him!.

To help our Parish Family prepare to receive the unexpected gifts and graces

of Advent, we will have a series of special bulletin inserts that highlight the spiritual significance of this Holy Season.

As a gift from the Parish, “Little Blue Books” will be distributed as a spiritual guide for you in Advent and throughout the Christmas Season. Finally, besides our daily schedule of Confessions, our Parish will join with all the Parishes in the New York Archdiocese in celebrating a “day for Confession” on December 21st, Reconciliation Monday. On Reconciliation Monday, Confessions will be heard continuously at the Parish from 4:00pm to 8:00pm.

“I am coming soon,” says the Lord, (Revelation 22:20). This Advent, prepare to welcome Him in joyful and unexpected ways. Sincerely in Christ, Monsignor Douglas J. Mathers

Christmas

Flower Fund

On Christmas Day and throughout the Christmas Season, our altar and Parish Church will be decorated with beautiful Christmas flowers. Parishioners wishing to remember a living or deceased parent, relative or friend are invited to make a donation to our Parish Christmas Flower Fund. The customary donation is $15.00. Our Parish Envelope Company has recently sent Parishioners a special Christmas Flower Offering envelope. Additional envelopes are available on the tables in the back of the Church, and in our pamphlet racks.

dear Padre What are the Catholic Church’s liturgical seasons? When does a new liturgical year begin? The Liturgical Year is the Church’s annual cycle of communal prayer and celebration that focuses on the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. The Catholic Church divides its Liturgical Year, or Year of Grace, into five distinct seasons: Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, and Ordinary Time. The Church’s Liturgical Year starts on the first Sunday of Advent, which follows the Feast of Christ the King. The Christmas season officially starts with the evening Masses on December 24. The celebration of Christmas or the Christmas Season lasts from Christmas Day through the feast of the Epiphany to the Baptism of the Lord, which is celebrated on either the second or third Sunday in January. Next comes Ordinary Time, which is divided into two parts. The first part ends the day before Ash Wednesday, which is the first of the forty days of Lent. Lent ends with the Sacred Triduum and the celebration of Easter. This is followed by the seven weeks of Easter Season, which ends the day when the Church celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. After Pentecost the Church begins the second part of Ordinary Time, which ends the day before the first Sunday of Advent (this year that’s in two weeks, on December 1). Each new liturgical season or year of grace has distinct themes and traditions, but they all come together in harmony to help you reflect on the one mystery that’s at the heart of every liturgy no matter the season: the Saving Mystery of Jesus’ Life, Death, and Resurrection.
