GORILLAS OF RWANDA

Page 5: Africa & Beyond April 2015 Newsletter

A MOST REMARKABLE MEETING - BY ROB MORLEY

Having been on my ‘bucket list’ for many, many years, trekking to see the Mountain Gorillas in Rwanda was one of the most truly amazing days of my life and certainly the best wildlife experience I have ever had.

There are only approximately 880 Mountain Gorillas left and visiting these beautiful creatures is a truly unique experience. After a short briefing from our guide our group of 8 (the maximum allowed with one family) embarked in search of our allocated gorilla family.

Treks can last from just 30 minutes to 4+ hours depending on where the groups are that day. After a 2 hour trek firstly through the beautiful hillside farming lands, and then the dense forest of the Volcanoes National Park, we finally caught sight of the ‘Titus Group’ (one of the 10 groups who are fully habituated and available to visit), resting, playing and quite happy with our presence as we approached. The Titus group is made up of 14 individuals, including a very cute (include pic attached) 3 month old baby, which we watched being cradled by its mother for the allocated hour, which flies by all too fast! Slightly older juveniles played in the undergrowth, happily brushed past us, knocked us with branches and stared inquisitively at us. The Silverback of course just slept, and occasionally scratched itself, very unfussed by his human visitors!

Once the hour is up we headed back to the headquarters reflecting on what was an awe-inspiring, unbelievable and spectacular experience with these remarkable creatures. It really should be a on everyone’s ‘bucket-list’ to see the Gorillas and also visit Rwanda; a country that is really as remarkable as the Gorillas themselves…..

More from Rob next month on the country’s must see list.

The Serengeti is open year round and mobile camps and lodges can be strategically positioned to make the most the migration sightings wherever it may be. However, by late August and into September, a lot of animals are in the north. Whilst there are just a few places this far north in the Serengeti that afford guest these spectacular views, Kenya’s Masai Mara is fully accessible and by carefully choosing the right camp, we can get you away from the masses and the minibuses.

We’ve all watch in wonder the amazing documentaries showcasing the natural phenomena that is ‘The Migration’. This is actually a permanent state of living for these animals, led by the changing seasons, in search of new, fresh food sources throughout the Serengeti Game Reserve in northern Tanzania and the Masai Mara National Park in Kenya.

By June, rains have stopped and temperatures are rising as the herds move on-mass from the west and central areas of the Serengeti and head northwest. They don’t by any means travel in a linear fashion, lush green grass will always dictate where and when they travel. However they will eventually reach the Mara River, the classic meeting place of Tanzania and Kenya that sees the millions of wildebeest, zebra, Thomsons gazelles and many more, literally chance their arm, by crossing!
