Messing about on the River!

Out on safari in a traditional 4x4 is a great way of covering a huge distance in search of your

favourite animals, but when possible, take time out to view your new world from a different

angle.

Across east & southern Africa there are many opportunities to take to the water. Whether it be

boat, kayak or mokoro, you’ll be sure of an up close and personal experience.

BOAT CRUISES

Botswana’s Chobe River offers daytime and sundowner river cruises, viewing the huge

elephant herds in and around the riverbanks.

The Lower Zambezi, Zambia not only allows guests a great view of the river’s hippo and

crocodile populations but in season has Africa’s best catch and release tiger fishing experience.

The Rufiji River, Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania is a firm favourite. Cruise along in

specially designed flat bottom boats to explore this birdwatchers’ paradise, while on the look out

for elephants, wild dog and other predators.

KAYAKING

Mana Pools, Zimbabwe has long been a draw for visitors looking for some watery

adventures. Paddle along the calming waters of the Zambezi River along with the resident

elephant herds.

Lake Malawi, Malawi stretches as far as the eye can see. Explore the shoreline, find a

sheltered beach for a picnic or try a spot of snorkelling.

Southern Madagascar, is just one of the many spectacular areas to view this fascinating

country from the water. A unique twist on a mobile camp, you can paddle between camps. The

region boasts beautiful coastal scenery where forests meet the shore, mangroves, wetlands and

lakes, not forgetting to be on the look out for wildlife, including the star attractions; lemurs &

chameleons.

BOTSWANA’S ANSWER TO VENICE

When in Botswana, you can enjoy a

leisurely Mokoro trip on the wetland

paradise of the Okavango Delta. Using

just a wooden dug out canoe and pole,

your guide skilfully navigates the

papyrus and reed channels in search of

hippos, elephants and maybe even spot

some tiny frogs.

Horse Power Safari

No 1. The camp welcomes mixed ability riders accommodated in

spacious, airy, ensuite tents, each on a raised viewing platform.

Children are also welcome at the camp.

Fugitives Drift - The Battlefields - South Africa

Here an opportunity to not only visit the historic Anglo/Zulu

Battlefields, but also a chance for riders to explore the

surrounding game reserve. Stay at either the lodge or the guest

house where accommodation is stylish and homely and the

staff are happy to plan activities throughout your stay.

Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse - Drakensberg Mountains

South Africa

This is a beautiful little hideaway in the mountains where the

food choices are second to none. A perfect location to saddle

up and explore the breath-taking mountains and rolling hills

which stretch as far as the eye can see.

Ant’s Nest - Waterberg, South Africa

Page 7: Africa & Beyond october 2015 newsletter

Let the horse take the strain while you roam across the plains. Most lodges will take riders

with intermediate to advanced level skills but there are some for a complete novice who

want to try something different. Here are some of our recommendations to suit mixed

abilities, families and those who seek adventure.

Ol Donyo - Amboseli, Kenya

Nestled between Tsavo East & Amboseli National Parks are the

Chyulu Hills, a vast sprawling wilderness where visitors are

assured utter tranquillity. A horse back experience here offers a

chance to ride unobtrusively amongst the wildlife.

Wolwedans Private Reserve - Namib Desert - Namibia

Located in the heart of the NamibRand Nature Reserve, are a

collection of exquisite camps to suit couples, families and

exclusive small gatherings. Rides are offered across the wide

opens spaces of the reserve with ride times and horses to suit

all levels of rider including sunrise or sundowner trips.

Desert Homestead Outposts - Sossusvlei - Namibia

Horse riding trails are a must for anyone staying at this lodge.

The gently undulating scenery is perfect for less experienced

riders , whilst advanced riders have endless amounts of space

to explore. There are just 11 spacious guest tented rooms or

maybe opt for a night camping out on the reserve.

Tswalu Kalahari - Northern Cape - South Africa

In a remote part of South Africa lies an area of outstanding

unspoilt beauty where riding plays a big part in the overall

experience. Head out across the grassy plains and rolling

mountains with nothing but the wildlife and birds for

company. Guests of all abilities are encouraged to give riding

a go including children, there’s even a pony camp for very

small children.

& for something a a little different

Kasanka Bat Safari

This rather special and unique trip is offered by

safari legends, Robin Pope Safaris. Every

November, up to 10 million fruit bats descend on

Kasanka National Park, Zambia, drawn by the

ripening fruit in this region.

Guests join a very small, fully guided group of

equally curious enthusiasts combining this park

with South Luangwa. Stay at Wasa Camp in

Kasanka and Nkwali Camp in the South Luangwa.

Walking Safari With A Twist

Walking out on safari is a thrilling opportunity to

get close to nature, but throw in some camels,

and you have a fun, non-intrusive way of

exploring your surroundings.

Up in the Lewa region of Kenya guests can

choose to walk or ride each day, arriving ‘home’

each night at your private ready made luxury fly

camp.

Watery fun is to be found at Rocktail

Bay, Maputuland, South Africa, where

between October - March logger-

head and leatherback turtles come

ashore to lay their eggs, then watch as

the hatchlings head back to the ocean.

Boat cruises, snorkelling and diving are

possible to see whales and dolphins.

A safari? In a desert? The Central

Kalahari, Botswana plays host to

surprising numbers of game and

boasts its very own migration. During

the rains, (Nov-May) 1000’s of plains

game are drawn in when the desert

bursts into new life. This in turn

attracts the predators including black

maned lion.
