AID President Lynn O’Shea Retires After 20 Years of ServiceSince beginning her tenure as AID President/CEO in 1998, Lynn O’Shea has tirelessly advocated for the positive growth of the Association for Individual Development (AID).
Lynn actively worked with legislators by advocating for best industry practices and improved funding. Her proactive nature influenced public opinion and support for individuals with diverse disabilities and mental health needs.
Lynn expanded AID programs and services to multiple counties throughout Northern Illinois. More than 5,500 individuals now receive services thanks to this expansion. To serve new clients, Lynn prudently managed resources; most recently exemplified by the near-completion of a $2.5 million Capital Campaign. This campaign eliminates mortgages and reroutes funds to programs and services.
Lynn’s numerous accomplishments are unquantifiable. Lynn is succeeded by Lore Baker who assumed the role of AID President/CEO on January 1, 2019.

LETTER FROM AID PRESIDENTDear Friends,
It is with mixed emotions that I say “Good bye” to AID. The past 20 years have been challenging, but rewarding to me personally. Here are some highlights we have accomplished together:
AID President, Lynn O’Shea
• Assisting more than 900 individuals to live successfully in AID supervised and supported housing programs.
• Assisting thousands of individuals to get and keep community jobs.
• Offering crisis support and victims services 24/7 in partnership with first responders.
• Attracting and retaining the BEST staff to support our clients and their families.
• Creating and administering the Ride in Kane program in collaboration with our municipal, township, and county partners, providing nearly 90,000 curb to curb trips for seniors and people with disabilities each year.
• Informing community leaders about the abilities and needs of individuals with disabilities, and securing their help to make our community more inclusive.
Yet there is much to be done. There are many still waiting for services; many exiting Special Education programs; and many who will need crisis and support services.
My successor, Lore Baker, has the skill and passion to lead AID into the future. I have no doubt that the dedicated, committed staff, friends, supporters and donors, will continue to empower individuals with various life challenges to enjoy lives of dignity and purpose. Please accept my humble THANKS to you all for making AID the leading organization it is today, supporting more than 5,500 children and adults each year.
Wishing you and your family happy holidays and a prosperous new year!

A Message from Incoming AID President & CEO, Lore BakerI’m so excited to have been afforded the opportunity to join the AID Family! Throughout my career, I’ve worked on community-integrated housing options and supports for persons with disabilities so coming to AID who specializes in supporting persons in their own homes seems like a perfect fit.
It is a bit daunting to follow the well-respected and knowledgeable retiring President/CEO Lynn O’Shea. People keep reminding me that I have big shoes to fill. Luckily I have size ten feet! Seriously, I hope to continue to lead AID in the course that Lynn has laid out: personal choice, a life like any other, employment options, special recreation opportunities, independent housing for all who wish, serving those with the highest need with integrity and professionalism, inclusion and integration for all, mental health services for all. I may not be a great juggler (see upper-right photo) but I’m sure that with the support of parents, guardians, consumers, community members, and AID staff, I’ll be able to keep all of the AID “balls” in the air.
I’m looking forward to the new year with its vast potential! Shoot me an email ([email protected]), give me a call (630.966.4001) or stop by the office to see me about your ideas and dreams.

AID McHenry Area Services Highlight New & Updated ProgramsSince the start-up of AID McHenry in May 2016, services have expanded into McHenry, Woodstock and Harvard, and include a variety of treatment options.
In January 2019, the existing Drop-In Center will offer support two days a week in Woodstock; the other three days will remain in McHenry. The AID Drop-In Center, run by a Peer Recovery Support Specialist, provides a safe and welcoming environment for adults with behavioral health needs. Activities include arts and crafts, watching movies, listening to music, quiet time, and conversing with peers. Psycho-Social Rehabilitation (PSR) will be implemented in February 2019
Expansion during 2018 was successful, and it appears that 2019 is on the same path! The goal is to offer personalized treatment plans for as many McHenry residents as possible.

On October 11, 2018, AID hosted the Annual Benefit Auction at the scenic Fishermen’s Inn in Elburn.
Hundreds of items and vacations were available for bidding during the live and silent auctions with all proceeds benefitting over 5,500 AID clients.
Nicole P., an AID Employment Services client, delivered the most notable moment of the event when she spoke to a captive audience about the significant employment support she has received from AID. “I stand before you here, on this beautiful night, to say that I work in my own community. I earn a fair wage, and I have a job that I chose for myself! October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and I feel empowered,” said Nicole.
The next AID Auction will be in October 2019, exact date TBA.Additional details will be posted at AIDcares.org.

Attention Employers: Let AID Work With You!AID Employment Services seek career opportunities for clients. With the assistance of AID Employment Services Specialists, clients are trained, hard-working and motivated employees; an individual who is more likely than most entry-level workers to meet and exceed your expectations and become stable, long-term employees.
AID Employment Specialists visit regularly and can offer supervisors tips on how to encourage the employee’s best work. Frequently, all that is needed is a short period of intensive on-the-job support. In addition, AID staff is available whenever needed to assist the individual in adapting to new responsibilities or increased demands.
AID helps employers address specific worksite issues including:
• Routine daily tasks that reduce staff productivity• New tasks or unfinished projects due to lack of time or resources. • Staff being stretched too thin during peak times of the year or hours of the day • High staff turnover
In the last 5 years, AID Employment Specialists have helped 336 clients find and keep jobs in the community.
AID employer partners in Fiscal Year 2018 include: Midwest Groundcovers, Rockpoint Logistics, Greencore USA, Walmart, Marcus Theatres, Pampered Pet Resort and Spa Services, Jewel, Portillo’s, Goodwill, Meijer, Stonebridge Country Club, Sam’s Club, Sodexo, Aramark, Amazon, Caputo’s Grocery, Elgin Community College, School Dist. U-46, Geneva Lutheran Church, Marshalls, Lifetouch Photography, Northwestern Medicine/Delnor, Subway, Valley Animal Hospital and many more!
AID Experiences Tremendous Support for #ILGIVE “Giving Tuesday” 2018An incredible $43,776 was raised for AID on #ILGIVE “Giving Tuesday” (November 27, 2018) thanks to 186 individual donors. This act of kindness helped place AID in the #5 spot for most funds raised as well as the #5 spot for most donors in the state of Illinois.
#ILGIVE is a statewide, non-partisan movement to support nonprofit communities in Illinois by increasing individual giving; it is part of the “Giving Tuesday” campaign.
Donations to AID made during the event were matched by the Coleman Foundation, Grand Victoria Foundation and Dunham Fund. This is the fourth year AID has “hosted” an #ILGIVE “Giving Tuesday” and it remains the single largest day of online giving for the organization in the fiscal year.

2-1-1 Info Hotline Now Available in Kane CountyJust as you dial 9-1-1 for emergencies, individuals can call 2-1-1 in Kane County and be connected to a live specialist, any time of the day or night, to provide information and referral to community resources.
With more than 1,000 government, nonprofit, and faith-based organizations (including AID) providing much needed services throughout Kane County, it can be overwhelming and confusing to know who does what and exactly where to start to get help needed. 2-1-1 is a free, centralized, anonymous place to start with a specialist on hand to help sort out the options.
No computer or internet is required. Translation is available in over 150 languages and callers of all ages can use this service as often as needed.
The 2-1-1 hotline compliments the already established AID Crisis Line of the Fox Valley (630) 966-9393, which provides assistance to individuals with depression, anxiety, loneliness and substance abuse. The AID Crisis Line of the Fox Valley is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Fundraise for AID on FacebookIndividuals looking to fundraise for AID on social media can now utilize the fundraiser tool on Facebook. To create a fundraiser for AID, follow these steps: Log-in to your personal facebook account, click “Fundraisers” in the left menu of your news feed, click “Raise Money”, select “Nonprofit/Charity”, select AID and click “Create”.
This is a great way to raise money for AID during the holidays, for birthdays or anytime of the year. Since mid-November of 2018, AID has already received nearly $750 in fundraising proceeds.
As there are no processing fees, AID will receive 100% of the money raised during a campaign.

AID and Entire Community Thank Local LegislatorsAID and other organizations, family, staff and Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities gathered to thank Representative Anna Moeller, Senator Linda Holmes, retired Senator Karen McConnaughay and the legislative co-sponsors for passing Senate Bill 3041.
“SB 3041 was designed to provide more resources for children and adults with Developmental Disabilities in their home communities”, said Representative Anna Moeller. “We were very pleased that both the House and Senate passed the legislation with overwhelming support”, reported Senator McConnaughay. “I was happy to be part of the bill’s passage”, commented Senator Holmes.
Jim Royster, an AID client and Aktion Club President (sponsored by the Elgin Noon Kiwanis) presented awards to the legislators. “This law will let voters decide to help people with disabilities. This is a good thing because we have so many people with Developmental Disabilities waiting to get help with jobs and a place to live and to join Clubs like the Aktion Club. We have 1,855 waiting in Kane County. That is why we want to say thanks”, said Jim.
“SB 3041 permits communities to provide local resources for supporting and creating services for their residents with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities”, commented Kim Zoeller, President/CEO of the Ray Graham Association. “SB 3041, now the Community Care for Persons with Developmental Disabilities Act, was supported by 300 community advocates and providers throughout Illinois who pushed for support during the fall legislative override session”, reported Laura Anderson of Winning Systems.
“There are over 20,000 individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities looking for services now, and over 50,000 currently on the statewide PUNS registered wait list. Only 1,000 individuals are selected for services from the wait list each year” according to Laurie Guerue, parent, Ray Graham Association, and IPADD founder.” SB3041 provides an opportunity for additional resources to support local programs for those receiving services locally, and will help provide relief for those who will wait an average of 20 years before their name is pulled from the state wait list. This resource is desperately needed,” said Lynn O’Shea, retiring AID President/CEO.
