WELCOME JUNIORS!

The AIJCA Junior Board would like to welcome you to the 2019 AIJCA Junior National Show and Leadership Conference! We hope you are ready for a fun-packed week of meeting new people, seeing old friends, and learning new skills. We have conference sessions, contests, and social events planned for you to expand your knowledge and demonstrate your strengths. Make sure to check out the schedule for a complete list of dates, times and locations for all the activities.

Make note of your group name on your Conference Name Tag. One of us will have a matching group name and be your leader throughout the week.

The General Caucus Meeting will be held on Monday, June 17th in Stagecoach. We welcome new ideas on how to improve and expand our organization; however, in order to be included in the agenda for the Annual Membership Meeting, those ideas must be presented in writing at the General Caucus. The Annual Membership Meeting will be held on Thursday, June 20th in the W.R. Watt Arena. Items properly presented will be discussed during the General Caucus Report & Action portion of the meeting.

We hope that everyone enjoys this week to the fullest. Participating and meeting new people will make your week a long lasting memory. If you need any assistance or have any questions, please find an AIJCA Board of Director. We would be happy to help!

Good luck and have a great week!

MEET YOUR 2018-2019 JUNIOR BOARD MEMBERS!AIJCA President - Teanna Simpson, Thayer, Missouri

Hello Everyone! My name is Teanna Simpson and I am this year’s AIJCA President. I grew up in Thayer, Missouri and just this past fall have graduated from Missouri State University with my Bachelor’s in Agriculture Education. I am now currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Professional Studies with an emphasis in Agricultural Communications as well as taking on a full time position as an Agricultural Education teacher and FFA advisor. I grew up on a registered Charolais ranch which has lead me to want to develop the herd I have now, in hopes of creating an elite donor program that strives for excellence both in the pasture and ring. As this is my last year to show as a junior member, I want to ask that during this week you take a few minutes out of the busy schedule to stop and appreciate. From the card games played with out-of-state friends on coolers, memorable contests and contest teams, early mornings, the friendships made, and the people that got you there. Appreciate it all, because one day it will be your last year as a junior and you don’t want to have taken a second of it for granted. Best of luck this week to all!

Area 1 - Tara Tellefson, Warden, Washington

Hello, my name is Tara Tellefson and I am the Area 1 Director. I am 19 years old and live in Warden, Washington. I’ve shown Charolais cattle since I could walk on my own. I’ve been heavily involved in 4H and FFA holding offices in both of these great youth organizations. I’ve shown and competed in several of the contests at the past 5 Junior National Charolais shows. I’m currently attending Big Bend Community College to complete my Associate’s Degree, where I will then move to a university to complete my teaching degree.

Area 2 - Trisha Dybdal, Newcastle, Nebraska

At Large - Molly Smith, Lockhart, Texas

Howdy y’all! My name is Molly Smith, from Lockhart, Texas and I am the 20-year-old daughter of Doris and Roger Smith. I have known for years that my future will be in agriculture. My introduction to agriculture came from my father, who taught me, at a young age, that land and animals were valuable resources that should be cultivated to enhance our livelihood. Since then, I have taken advantage of opportunities that provided me with the tools to create the future that I see for myself. I have made an effort to immerse myself into all things agricultural so that I can achieve my dream of obtaining a

Ph.D. in Animal Physiology. I began showing Charolais cattle very early on and began showing Brahman cattle as well. I am truly thankful for the experiences I have had and the friendships I’ve made along the way. I wish everyone good luck and safe travels!

SORS

He starts his story with “once upon a time” and follows with a chuckle, but rest assured his story has been close to a fairytale. This year’s 2019 Show Dedicatee, Dennis Adams’ involvement within the Charolais breed is one that dates back even before his time.

Dennis says the story begins with his grandparents, who were homesteaders in New Mexico in the year of 1905. From then, it would be 57 years later that the Adams family would obtain their first Charolais. The last commanding officer of the ground Calvary, or better known as a friend of the family, introduced Charolais into the New Mexico man’s life. This General in the Army had been to all the Texas majors and spoke highly of the Charolais breed; it was not long after that that same friend brought four Charolais cross heifers to New Mexico when he retired from the service. Dennis recalls that they were so impressed with them that they went back to the same place in Texas for the next two years and bought heifers to start their FFA projects. He

gives credit to these females being the reason that he became so involved within FFA. It was these heifers that became the foundation and driving reason Dennis would receive his American Farmer Degree and become a State FFA Officer. The family’s first purebred cattle would come from Mack Braly in Oklahoma.

Dennis says that they started showing at a few shows, but had not yet dived in. It was at the Tri-State Fair in Amarillo, Texas when Dennis had his first taste of success; grabbing Grand Champion Bull honors. Dennis credits much of his early success to Ted Kelley of Texas, Lyle Miller of Iowa and the Bauman Family of Wyoming. “I really learned to appreciate the cattle and what it takes to be successful with them.”

It is when Dennis starts talking about his daughters’ show careers that he gets truly excited. His daughter, Sharla, accomplished an incredible milestone, being granted with two Grand Champion Females and one Reserve Champion at the Junior National throughout her junior career; also having the honor as serving as the President for the AIJCA Junior Board. The most memorable show that Dennis recalls is a Junior National in South Dakota when his daughters showed against one another in the champion drive with two home-raised heifers. He was soon able to put down a tally for one of Sharla’s Grand Champion Females at the Junior National. One year, the family even exhibited the Grand Champion Bull and Female at the National Western Stock Show. Dennis also beams with pride when he mentions that both Sharla and himself were selected as Herdsman of the Year. The girls’ show careers within the state of Texas were second to none. Exhibiting the Grand Champion Steer at Ft. Worth, San Antonio, and Houston would lead Carrie to picking up a hog whip instead of a show stick. In this ring, she would have a Grand Champion Barrow at Ft. Worth and a Grand and Reserve at Louisville.

Dennis and his family sold many of their bulls in New Mexico and credits this with being a “good base for the program.” Dennis made the decision to lease his cows to the CJ Ranch, owned by Charlie and Jean Smith, for three years. Not long after, he started a bull sale, and this is where his sale management experience started. Buzz Garey did a female sale for Dennis one year in New Mexico, and it was what Dennis learned from Buzz that led to a female show and futurity surfacing at the CJ Ranch. Dennis recalls the horrible droughts in New Mexico, so they made the move to Texas. 1991 would be the first year he started managing sales. Outfront Cattle Service is the name of Dennis’ sale management business today.

With pride, Dennis shares that his entire family is still heavily involved within the livestock industry. His daughter, Sharla Ishmael, is the managing editor for the Show Circuit and her husband, Wes is a writer for both BEEF Magazine and Cattle Today. Wes and Sharla have two kids, Josie and Brooks. It is with pride that Dennis speaks about Josie’s basketball career and her future in the sport. Adams’ other daughter, Carrie and her husband, Josh Brockman, own and operate Brockman Farms and are finding much success, including the Grand Champion Barrow at Houston in 2017. Carrie’s kids, Kaden and Kam are just getting started in the show ring, but Kaden’s first year treated him well, exhibiting the Grand Champion Market Barrow at San Antonio.

Dennis advocates for the Charolais breed as well as youth within his career and personal life. He covers the country managing sales from Georgia to Montana and Virginia to Texas. He will be the first to tell you that he met a lot of great people and developed lifelong friends across the country. Dennis cannot stress enough to juniors the importance of participation. Participation leads to friendships, and it is those friendships that will stick with you in both your personal and business life.

“Go out and challenge yourself to do the best job you can, because you never want to look back and say, ‘If only I had tried a little harder!’ Let your parents know you appreciate them and acknowledge those that have helped you along the way.”

CONFERENCE HONOREESAL & PEGGY RAGSDALE

by: Melanie Fishel, Kernersville, N.C.

Emory, better known as Al, and his wife, Peggy Ragsdale are nothing short of an inspiration to everyone they meet. Described by their peers as selfless, kind-hearted, and humble, the Ragsdales have made a lasting impression on the AIJCA and are true role models to the youth in the organization.

The Ragsdales began their involvement in the Charolais breed in the early 70’s. They were introduced to registered Charolais in San Marcos, Texas and began their education aided by rancher, Paul Hopson of Martindale, Texas. Upon receiving a job offer in College Station, Texas, the Ragsdales were led to host their first dispersal sale.

After moving, Al and Peggy saw a great opportunity to raise cattle on their 40 acre property with additional leased acreage. They knew they needed cattle with good temperament, easy calving, strong weaning weights and a successful bull market, so the Charolais breed was an easy choice once again. The Ragsdales also had friends that were raising the breed and were familiar with the family atmosphere they provided. Without much background in the beef industry, they decided to attend a sale in Gonzales, Texas to learn more and network. They relied on good friends such as Dennis Adams, Rick Evans, Bill Arlitt, Bill Morley and so many others. Over the years the Ragsdales’ Charolais operation grew tremendously, producing some of the top genetics in the country. A few decades later, Al received a job opportunity and they held their second dispersal sale. Cattle sold were purchased by producers across the country and their genetics continue to positively influence the Charolais breed.

Although the Ragsdales have been out of the cattle business for several years, they continue to be involved in the Charolais breed. As the Senior Financial Advisor of Jackson, Ragsdale & Associates, Al continues to serve as the financial advisor for the American-International Junior Charolais Foundation (AIJCF). The AIJCF was founded in 1970 with the purpose of providing funds to support leadership and scholarship opportunities for Charolais youth. In the early 2000s when Larry Lehman was appointed Chairman of the AIJCF Board of Trustees, he knew that Al’s experience as a financial advisor and passion for helping youth would be a valuable asset to the restructuring of the AIJCF. “Under Al’s management of the Foundation’s endowments, the AIJCF increased the amount of funds that are available to give as scholarships to our juniors.” said Lehman. In 2018, the AIJCF awarded scholarships to 28 juniors from 13 states, totaling $42,500 in scholarships.

In May of 2018, Al and Peggy donated a 1986 Mercedes-Benz convertible to the Texas Junior Charolais Association to be auctioned off at the Sale of Excellence in College Station, Texas. Proceeds went to AIJCA Junior National Show & Leadership Conference in Fort Worth, Texas. The car, purchased by Wayne & Lois Bennet of Oak Hill Farm, Dawsonville, Georgia raised $20,000 for the Texas Junior Charolais Association allowing them to host a record breaking AIJCA Junior National.

Al and Peggy help juniors any way they can because they believe that programs like the AIJCA help to positively shape the next generation. They believe in hard work and are willing to help juniors get a leg up if they are willing to put the time and effort into being their very best selves. According to Al, “There is not a tougher job in the world than agriculture. They take more risk than any other business out there. Youth in agriculture are taught to be resilient because if something bad is going to happen, it will.”

Al and Peggy are well known and respected in their community and are always willing to volunteer. They truly care about people and are always willing to lend a helping hand or listening ear when someone is in need. Several years ago while already volunteering for several organizations, Peggy began a volunteer position at the local Salvation Army in their Clothing Closet. She started with a building full of mountains of donations and over the next few years became a liaison and coordinator in charge of sorting and organizing the items as well as directly working with the families with their needs. Six years later she is still in that volunteer position, aiding a great number of families each week. In an interview with their local newspaper The Eagle about her work, Peggy said, “What I was most impressed with is that the local Salvation Army provides the clothing free of charge to the families - they don’t pay a dime to clothe their families. That was very important to me and is such a great service to the Brazos Valley.”

The Ragsdales are described as the kind of couple that anybody would aspire to be or have as family. Al & Peggy Ragsdale currently reside in Bryan-College Station, Texas and have four children, nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

The AIJCA is honored to recognize Al & Peggy as the 2019 AIJCA Conference Honorees.
