The Alcatel 1000 Softswitch E10, Release 26, has

been designed to accompany operators entering

the NGN world.

By either providing a stand-alone softswitch in a

pure NGN environment or by smoothly migrating

the installed base, Release 26 helps operators

to implement their strategy. In both cases, the

Alcatel 1000 Softswitch E10 is able to simultane-

ously handle time division multiplexing (TDM)

and voice over IP (VoIP) traffic.

The Alcatel 1000 Softswitch E10 supports trunking

gateways (TGWs) in a first step and VoIP access

gateways (AGWs) in a second step while ensuring

full continuity of end-user services, full interop-

erability with the Alcatel 1000 E10 switches,

full compatibility with network management

and signaling interfaces as well as interworking

with other NGN components.

The Alcatel 1000 Softswitch E10 is a key element

of Alcatel’s NGN portfolio. It helps safeguard

service providers’ Alcatel 1000 E10 installed base

and its embedded feature richness by providing a

consistent strategy towards NGN, where Alcatel

1000 MM E10 switches become part of NGN

migration. The Alcatel 1000 Softswitch E10 is the

most cost-effective, future-safe and reliable way

to migrate the installed base toward NGN.

Technical Summary

Features

> Voice switching and softswitching on the same platform

> Full-fledged local and transit services> Full NGN-TDM interworking (handles

both TDM- and NGN-based traffic)> NGN Class 4 services in a single-softswitch

or multi-softswitch architecture> Controls multi-vendor H.248 gateways> Supports CODEC negotiation, ISUP

continuity tests, transparent 64 Kb/schannels and echo control

> Supports any operator services, end-userbearer services, teleservices or supplemen-tary services, including intelligent network(IN) services, as well as system features, all for local and transit applications

> Provides NGN call charging, observation, supplementary services, echo control devicehandling, routing enhancement and bearerchannel establishment before ringing

> Supports all IN, management and networksignaling protocols supported by the Alcatel1000 Softswitch E10 generic applicationsoftware release

> Supports legacy network interfaces, sub-scriber interfaces and subscriber connectionunits that are supported by the genericapplication software release

Capacity

> 16,000 equivalent E1 or 480,000 trunks> 2,000 media gateways> 8 million busy hour call attempts (BHCA)

without IN calls> 2.5 million BHCA with 100 percent IN calls

* Future release

Protocols

> H.248/Megaco over UDP/IP for mediagateways

> BICC/CS2 (Q.1902.1 to 6; Q.1970;Q.1990) (with another Alcatel softswitch or any BICC/CS2-compliant softswitch)

> Preferred network signaling transport isTDM links connected to Alcatel 1000 MME10’s core, either directly (associated mode)or through STP (quasi-associated mode)

> Network signaling transport over packet:• Circuit-emulation mechanism• External signaling gateways,

e.g., Alcatel 5023 RTG/RSG > SS7 ITU-T ISUP V3 plus national adaptations> INAP> Interworking with legacy subscribers

(CSN, V5.2 AN) > Interworking with legacy network signaling

(ISUP, CAS)> BICC-to-BICC transit service available> Standard Alcatel network management > SIP*> SIGTRAN*

System Configuration

> Based on the standard Alcatel 1000 MME10 platform

> N + P common hardware multiprocessorstations for real-time distributed and scalablecontrol (media gateway controller applicationredundancy over active-active SMB)

> No single point of failure> 99.999 percent availability> Large-scale integration CMOS components,

Power PC, Power Quick processors, µBGAtechnology

> High-performance DSP, 0.35 µm ASICSembedding up to 250,000 gates

> Surface mounting technology, up to 12 layered printed boards (UTE Classes 5, 6 and 8), microvia technology (100 µm)

> High-capacity connectors and inter-rackcabling prepared during production phase

> Highly scalable subscriber access unit and core switch
