Let’s support to save lives.
Message....
From the Chairman
It is always a pleasure to pen a note when there is good news to convey....
ALERT in its 13the year
has already crossed
many milestones. Signif-
icantly, as a proud endorsement,
this year, the World Health Or-
ganisation (WHO) India collaborat-
ed with ALERT, for deploying first
aid knowledge to the community.
During the last 13 years, we have
been concentrating mainly on
evangelising the noble idea of
saving lives, by way of community
and corporate training. As
Kala, Rajesh and the team at ALERT have been doing such a selfless ser-vice for the unknown strangers, that it is so soul satisfying to pen them down.
saving the life of anyone facing
trauma, is the backbone of this
mission, the stakes are highest
for the unknown beneficiary, a
stranger who is unfortunate to
be the victim in a road accident.
Yet emergencies do not limit them-
selves to road accidents. It could be
an emergency in a factory, a mishap
in a sports field, or even an elder
going through breathlessness in a
residential complex. So the need for
support to save lives is everywhere,
5
Annual Report 2019 - 20
V. M. Muralidharan Chairman - ALERT
and the need and span for knowledgeable
emergency support is limitless. Last year,
ALERT oriented an unprecedented 55,000
good samaritans, who volunteered,
in basic life saving skills. Our achieve-
ments have been effective and modest ! !
But there is a bright spot in all of this.
It is the difference we are making to-
gether, hand in hand with the good Sa-
maritans, who have already been ori-
ented. Our mission, with our mentor
Dr. Kalam’s words ringing in our years,
drives us to pursue the mission, self-
lessly & efficiently and in a manner that
is effective in any emergency situation.
That is why I am proud that, thanks to
the generous support of our corporate
partners, communities and more
importantly our volunteers, we worked
relentlessly and reached 55,000 people
this year. In terms of the way forward, we
are on the path at evolving this program
to create a more holistic intervention,
where volunteers are not only tracked
post their training but also networked, to
be ‘called’ to support during emergencies.
We now celebrate these baby steps,
even as we redouble our efforts,
much more vigorously, to ensure that
we achieve even more. And so we
look ahead to the next year, with
renewed faith, hope and enthusiasm
! With your continued support, we will.
May God Bless !
Last year, ALERT oriented an unprecedented 55,000 good samaritans, who volunteered.....

inaction. 2019-20 witnessed ALERT
scaling up its mission to reach out to
over 55,000 lives, across 13 states,
26 cities. Having conducted over
487 workshops this year, with an
average of 1.7 workshops a day, I
salute the team of volunteers and
trainers for their selfless efforts.
It has indeed been a humbling and
exciting moment to be called in as
the India’s expert panel for rolling
out the First Aid curriculum for our
nation. To be working along with
Team ALERT marches majestically with its army of over 1,30,000
empowered citizens of India, committed to act in need and save lives.
As ALERT steps into its milestone year 2020, I extend my heartfelt thanks and
gratitude to our esteemed patrons and well-wishers for your staunch trust in
us, our volunteers who are the backbone of our mission, our advisors for your
valuable directions, our partners, members of the Board and our star team of
office bearers for an unparalleled year 2019-2020.
Back in 2006, as an IT professional, what disturbed me most, was not the
accidents on the road or the emergencies, what shook me was the prevalence
of apathy and onlooker behaviour pattern! The result was the genesis of ALERT,
which was born out of a resolve that no life, around us should be lost due to

the World Health Organization, AIIMS-
Delhi and the Govt of India, as the content
and technology partner, has adorned yet
another feather to our decade of service.
At this moment, I’d like to put my hands
together to the Govt of TN and Karnataka
for their outstanding encouragement and
facilitation.
While the entire world is just about
getting geared to welcome and
celebrate 2020, we are now facing a
new challenge – Covid 19, a pandemic of
our lifetime. As we are passing through
these unprecedented times and while
we continue to see uncertainty during
this period, we at ALERT pledge to be
of service and traverse this journey with
all of you. Quick measures at a war
footing have been rolled out to ensure
our activities are made relevant to the
CoVID 19 needs. The ALERT VoICE app is
being re-vamped to cater to the growing
emergencies during the lock down phase,
and the volunteers are stepping up to
distribute essentials such as masks to the
needy. Resilience, being the solution of
the hour, we have not only moved all our
offerings online, but are also building a
holistic advisory, for the organizations as
a good-will gesture to help the leadership
and their staff embrace the new normal
seamlessly. The ALERT Townhall sessions
not only keep the community purposefully
engaged through the home confinement
phase, but also motivated.
Every incident handled and reported
back by our ALERT VoICE’s (Volunteer
In Case of Emergency), and with every
testimonial received from our patrons,
there’s a resounding echo that tells us that
the responsibility and the need is huge,
and the journey ahead is long! More than
ever, the sense of urgency and the need
for our communities to be in readiness to
handle emergencies, is being critical now,
which makes our task ahead arduous, but
not an impossible one with all of us in it
together. With an undaunted spirit and
determination you and I can absolutely
pave the path for a better tomorrow. Let’s
not wait for miracles, let’s make them!
Looking forward for a healthy, safe and
empowered year ahead!

A few life saving episodes from our
alert VoICE’s
Sneha Fernandez says,This morning around 9.45 am, I was on my way to Kanchipuram, just before the railway gate we found
a slight traffic jam and looking further saw a crowd. I got out of the car and went to check. Found a
boy who was hurt and bleeding. I asked one of the observers to go to the car and call my friend for help
and instructed him to bring our first aid kit. He had abrasions on his knee but a deep cut under his foot.
Quickly checked for any dislocation or fractures but there seemed to be none, so cleaned the wound and
in the meantime asked a person to call 108. His foot was bleeding so washed the cut with some water n
then with the wipes. Finally, I just bandaged his foot so sand wouldn't get into it and it would at least ease
bleeding. I made sure he was seated with his leg stretched till the ambulance came
Priyanka Ramachandra says,I went as a First aid volunteer to a Cycling event, when I was returning home, I saw an auto driver who was
asking other vehicles to move. Then I noticed 3 people were carrying the victim from the middle of the road
to the roadside corner. I parked the bike and took my medical kit. When I saw the Victim, I asked him if
he was ok? He was bleeding and I noticed there were many abrasions in his hands and legs. I assured him
he is going to be fine and asked him to relax and sit. Everyone was asking to shift the victim in auto and
take him to the hospital. I told them instead to call the ambulance and wait. After a few minutes I noticed
that he was hiding something with his head Scarf by holding his thigh very tightly. I requested him to take
his hands off and sit. The moment he took his hands from his leg, he realized it was very painful. Then I
removed my helmet and asked him to balance it, he released his hands and I saw a part of his thigh flesh
had come out fully and his bone was visible. I tied the entire wounded area with a Bandage Cloth after
Wiping the blood. His two friends came next to me and asked for help as they were also injured.
The first friend was bleeding from his nose and lips, and the second friend got few abrasions. Meanwhile
Ambulance came and all three of them were taken to hospital. Everyone came and asked me if I were
a doctor, for which I said No. They appreciated me for knowing the skill of Basic Life support and were
amazed that I was carrying my First Aid Kit.
t’s true that having first aid training undoubtedly helps save lives. That’s not all though; giving appropriate
first aid immediately can help to reduce a person’s recovery time and make the difference between the
patient having a temporary or long-term disability. You’ll learn how to remain calm in emergency situations
and you’ll learn simple acronyms to help you recall the steps you need to take.

Santhosh Shankar says,On the 24th August I was travelling from Alleppey boat jetty to Changanassery in Kerala. I went there
for psycho social care work and flood relief work. I was walking with my sister to the nearby bus stop.
Suddenly a bus hit a two-wheeler while taking a left turn. The two-wheeler was standing near the road
side and was crushed by the back tyre. Luckily nothing happened to anybody. The Victims of the accident
were a lady, and her son and daughter. Nothing happened to their children. Keeping all my belongings
safely aside, I informed my sister to take care of my things. Checking the scene safety, I lifted the lady
because she was unable to get up and walk. Then I took her to a safer area to examine her. The accident
happened opposite the police station. Hence, there was a policeman present at the scene, they started to
enquire about me and I was surrounded by few other onlookers. I was travelling with my first aid kit bag
therefore I took my Alert Voice ID card and informed them that I was a trained first responder. My sister
helped translate everything to them in Malayalam. Within a second, I got permission to examine the victim.
Though she was almost okay I advised her to visit a hospital for further check-up. Then the policemen
helped call an auto and all of them were sent to a nearby hospital. Thanks to my sister who helped me
throughout the situation. I did not panic even though I don’t know the language. I simply remembered the
Good Samaritan law and helped my fellow people in need.
Please learn some basic life support techniques.
Siddharth Chandrasekar says,Yesterday, I was traveling to Mahabalipuram. Half the way I saw a huge crowd on the side of the road. I
stopped the vehicle and went there. There was a man who had been in a road accident. He had multiple
bruises and Injuries. The worst injuries were on his forehead. His eyes were closed, and he was being held
up by someone. I went close and assessed the situation. He had his pulse. But his breathing was irregular,
and rapid. I immediately put him in the Recovery Position. Within a minute, he was talking and he sat up
on his own. The ambulance had been called by someone already. While we were waiting, I cleared the
crowd around him. I did not have my first aid kit with me, so I put a plastic bag on my hand and used
a clean cloth to clean his face and cover his forehead injuries. After about a half hour, the Government
Ambulance arrived. I helped the victim to get into the ambulance, and left the scene. Please learn some
basic life support techniques.

Volunteers
Just as a tree’s survival
depends on the strength of
the roots, ALERT’s progress
of where we are right now is because
of the invaluable contribution of
innnumerable volunteers across the
world. Be it as trainers, managing
signature events like ABA &
Alertathon, participating as first aid
volunteers across events, following
up for workshops, managing
partners, fund raising, spreading
awareness, creating posters and
what not... Our volunteers have
been our heroes behind the screen.
To summarise, there is NO ALERT
without our Volunteers support...
