THE RIVER FRONTCHICAGO CONTEMPORARY ART INSTITUTE
ROLE IN PROJECT: DESIGNERNATURE OF PROJECT: STUDIO PROJECTFUNCTION: MUSEUM AND GALLERYLOCATION: CHICAGO, ILLINOIS
THE RIVER FRONT IS AN INSTITUTE FOR THE CONTEMPORARY ARTS LOCATED ALONG THE CHICAGO RIVER. CHICAGO IS KNOWN FOR BEING A VIBRANT CITY WITH HIGH RISES THROUGH OUT THE CITY. THE CHICAGO RIVER RUNS THROUGH THE HEART OF THE CITY. STEEL STRUCTURED BUILDINGS AND BRIDGES ARE A SIGNIFICANT PART OF THE ARCHITECTURE CULTURE.
THE RIVER FRONT ART INSTITUE AIMS TO ESTABLISH A CONNECTION BETWEEN THE PUBLIC REALM ON THE STREET LEVEL AND THE RIVER WALKWAY 15 FT BELOW STREET LEVEL. THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE LEVELS IS ESTABLISHED THROUGH THE ART INSTITUTE, EXIST-ING STEPS AND A PROPOSED RAMPING SYSTEM.
THE SITE SITS ALONG THE CHICAGO RIVER AND IS SURROUNDED BY TOWERING BUILDINGS. THE RIVER FRONT IS PROPOSED TO BE MUCH SMALLER IN SCALE WITH RESPECT TO THE SURROUNDING BUILD-INGS IN ORDER TO EXTABLISH THE RIVER FRONT AS A FOCAL POINT. THE PROPOSED STEEL AND GLASS STRUCTURE OF THE INSTITUTE AIMS TO ADHERE TO POPULAR CHICAGO FACADE METHODOLIGY .
THE RIVER FRONT IS DESIGNED TO CONSIST OF GLASS CURTAIN SYSTEMS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF VIEWS OF THE CITY AND RIVER. PROPOSED WALKWAYS SURROUND THE BUILDING CREATING A COM-BINATION OF OUTDOOR AND INDOOR SPACES FOR VISITORS. A STEEL STRUCTURED SHADING SYSTEM SURROUNDS THE GLASS FACADE IN ORDER TO DICTATE THE AMOUNT OF SUNLIGHT ENTERING THE GLASS BUILDING BUT NOT LIMITING VIEWS TO THE CITY AND RIVER.
PROPOSED SITE FOR THE CONTEM-PORARY ART MUSEUM LOCATED IN CHICAGO, ALONG THE CHICAGO RIVER.
BUILDING ENCLOSURE IS PARALLEL TO SITE BOUNDARIES AND IS COMPOSED OF ALL GLASS CURTAIN SYSTEMS TO MAXIMIZE ON CITY AND RIVER VIEWS.
SMALLER VOLUMES ARE SUB-TRACTED FROM THE BUILDING’S TOTAL VOLUME, IN ORDER TO CREATE SECTIONAL MOVEMENT WHICH TRANSLATES INTO A MIX-TURE OF OUTDOOR AND INDOOR SPACES.
OUTDOOR WALKWAYS ARE CREATED ON THE 2ND, 3RD AND 4TH LEVEL, TO CREATE ADDI-TIONAL MEANS OF CIRCULATION AMONGST LEVELS AND OUTDOOR/INDOOR SPACES.
SHADING SYSTEM COMPOSED OF STEEL, CIRCUMSCRIBES THE GLASS BUILDING AND WALKWAYS IN ORDER TO DICTATE THE AMOUNT OF SUNLIGHT ENTERING THE BUILDING.

THE CITY OF MAUMEE HAS A RICH HISTORY AND HAS LIVED THROUGH VARIOUS FAMOUS BATTLES IN THE PAST. THE MAUMEE RIVER WAS AN IMPORTANT FACTOR IN ESTABLISHING THE CITY OF MAUMEE AND IS THE MAIN REASON FOR WHICH THE CITY SAW ECONOMIC GROWTH BY THE EARLY SETTLERS. THE RIVER WAS A MAIN TRANSPORTATION HUB IN THE NORH WEST. WHEN THINKING OF THE HISTORY OF MAUMEE, THE MAUMEE RIVER COMES TO MIND IMMEDIATELY.
THE SITE IS LOCATED ON THE MAIN INTERSECTION AND EN-TRANCE OF THE CITY. THE AREA SURROUNDING THE SITE IS COM-POSED OF BOTH COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL ZONES. ACROSS OF THE SITE SITS THE LARGEST SCHOOL IN THE AREA.
ACCORDING TO THE NEARBY RESIDENTS OF THE PROPOSED SITE, THIS VACANT LOT SHOULD INCORPORATE A PROGRAM IN WHICH ACCOMMODATES VARIOUS USERS AND SPACIAL USES. A SITE THAT IS INVITING FOR THE CITY YOUTH WAS A MAIN FOCUS BEHIND THE DESIGN.
THE CONCEPT BEHIND THE DESIGN WAS TO PORTRAY THE RIV-ER AND THE CITY OF MAUMEE ON A MICRO LEVEL WITHIN THE SITE. A CURVILINEAR DESIGN IS PROPOSED TO REPRESENT THE RIVER AND EXTABLISHES A CONNECTION TO THE SCHOOL RE-SIDING ACROSS OF THE SITE. IT WAS IMPORTANT TO ALLOW A SAFE ACCESS TO THE SITE FOR THE CITY YOUTH. THE BUILDING IS COMPOSED OF ALL GLASS AND CONCRETE. METAL LOUVERS ARE PROPOSED TO DICTATE THE AMOUNT OF SUNLIGHT ENTERING THE INTERIOR SPACES.
ESTABLISH A CONNECTION BETWEEN THE SITE AND THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
BUILDING IS CURVILINEAR TO REPRESENT THE SHAPE OF THE MAUMEE RIVER AND TO BE A FOCAL POINT AMONGST THE RECTALINEAR SITE CONTEXT.
