The Baptism of the Lord “Jesus' public life begins with his baptism by John in the Jordan. John preaches "a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins". A crowd of sinners - tax collectors and soldiers, Pharisees and Sadducees, and prostitutes- come to be baptized by him. "Then Jesus appears." The Baptist hesitates, but Jesus insists and receives baptism. Then the Holy Spirit, in the form of a dove, comes upon Jesus and a voice from heaven proclaims, "This is my beloved Son." This is the manifestation ("Epiphany") of Jesus as Messiah of Israel and Son of God. The baptism of Jesus is on his part the acceptance and inauguration of his mission as God's suffering Servant. He allows himself to be numbered among sinners; he is already "the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world". Already he is anticipating the "baptism" of his bloody death. Already he is coming to "fulfil all righteousness", that is, he is submitting himself entirely to his Father's will: out of love he consents to this baptism of death for the remission of our sins. The Father's voice responds to the Son's acceptance, proclaiming his entire delight in his Son. The Spirit whom Jesus possessed in fullness from his conception comes to "rest on him". Jesus will be the source of the Spirit for all mankind. At his baptism "the heavens were opened" - the heavens that Adam's sin had closed - and the waters were sanctified by the descent of Jesus and the Spirit, a prelude to the new creation.” ~catholicculture.com

Remember in prayer all who are in need of the Lord’s healing and strength especially:

    The Healing Power of God

By His Baptism, Jesus makes holy the water of every Baptism that will take place following His. It is through the sacrament of baptism that we become his disciples. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life, and it is precisely in Jesus that our human existence finds fulfillment. In baptism, we participate in his death so that we too may participate in his rising to new and eternal life.

    “By His Baptism,

Jesus makes holy the water of every Baptism “

Prayer to Receive a New Bishop Praise to you, Lord our God, our eternal shepherd and guide. In your faithfulness, grant to the Diocese of Saint Cloud a shepherd whose watchful care and kindly zeal will continue the good work of his predecessors. In your love for us, give us a shepherd who will lead us in being Christ’s heart of mercy, voice of hope, and hands of justice. Help him to fill our minds and hearts with the truth of the Gospel, the power of the sacraments, and the desire to build up your holy Church. We ask this through Jesus Christ, your Son and our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

2021 Bishops Annual Appeal “Gifts offered by Human Hands” to support diocesan ministries Stewardship as a Way of Life: “And a voice came from the heavens, ‘You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.’” — Mark 1:11 Through our baptism, we too, are daughters and sons of God. We are disciples of Jesus. As true disciples we are called to actively participate in our Catholic faith, not just be mere bystanders. This means work-ing in collaboration with the Holy Spirit and discerning how we are being asked to use our gifts — using them for the benefit of others and not just for our own interests and comfort. Please consider a generous gift to the Annual Appeal. www.stcdio.org.

January is Respect for Life Month The protection of human life and promotion of human dignity are core tenets of Catholic social teaching rooted in Scripture. The Book of Genesis reminds us that we are made in the image and likeness of God. Psalm 139 tells us: “You formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb. I praise you, because I am wonderfully made; wonderful are your works! My very self you know.” How can we do this, not only this month, but year-round? Check with your parish for opportunities to help pregnant women in need, support a local food shelf, or assist others on the peripheries in your community. Spend time in prayer by yourself or in a group and pray for a conversion of hearts so that all life, from conception to death, will be respected and nurtured. Get involved in this year’s state legislative session. The Minnesota Catholic Conference’s Catholic Advocacy Network offers ways to easily take action and stay informed on issues, policies and legislation throughout the year. Your pro-life witness will help to keep harmful legislation, such as the legalization of physician-assisted suicide, from becoming law. ~Bishop Donald Kettler
