FEBRUARY 17, 2019
SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
“Blessed are the poor. Woe to you who are rich.” Luke 6:17, 20-26
Prepare For Next Sunday’s Readings
INTRODUCTION
In next Sunday’s Gospel, (February 24), the readings seem especially pertinent to us living in
a climate of sarcasm and insults, offensiveness
and bullying, violence and hatred. Sparing– let
alone forgiving and loving– one’s perceived
enemies, or refusing to judge others is hardly
“natural” to most of us. But God sees it
differently, and we are faced with the choice of
whether we will too. Considering what this
requires of us is a good way to enter the
immanent season of Lent.
SCRIPTURE READINGS
1 Samuel 26:2, 7-9, 12-13, 22-23: David spares
his enemy

Embracing Authentic Love: Humanae Vitae Explained Three Day Speaker Series What is God's plan for love and family life? Why is the Church against contraception? What exactly is Natural Family Planning? Humanae Vitae, the papal document which clarified these teachings, calls us to love in a way that respects God’s beautiful design for marital love and life. Join us on Feb. 17th, 18th, and 19th from 7:00-
8:30 pm at St. Anthony Parish Center in Effingham to learn about these beautiful but challenging teachings. Who can come? This event is for any adult; married, single, young, and old, in the Effingham Deanery area! Talks and Speakers: Sunday, Feb. 17th - Humanae Vitae: Understanding Love and Marriage in the Image of God with Joe Gehret Monday, Feb. 18th - The Struggle is Real: Embracing the Truth Behind the Church's Teachings with Patty Schneier Tuesday, Feb. 19th - A Medical Perspective on the Effectiveness of Natural Family Planning and NaPro (Natural Procreative) Technology with Dr. Gavin Puthoff, MD.
A Pilgrim’s Progress . . .
As participants in Sonja Corbitt’s
FULFILLED series have been learning in our
Thursday evening adult formation for both
parishes at the IC parish center, on uncovering
the Biblical foundations of Catholicism, The
Old Testament Tabernacle was a portable tent-
like structure in which God dwelt in the midst
of his people. The tent was made of acacia
wood boards overlaid with gold and fitted to
form the walls. Four layers of curtains acted as
the roof to shield the Tabernacle from the sun
and rain. The inner most layer was woven with
figures of angelic cherubim. Within the
sanctuary of our parish churches lies the
Tabernacle which contains the Real Presence
of God in the Blessed Sacrament. Here the
Holy Eucharist is reserved for adoration
through visits throughout the day and so Holy
Communion may be taken to those unable to
participate in the mass. The earliest photos of
Immaculate Conception Church show images
of four angels flanking the Tabernacle in the
center of the reredos or “back altar.” Two
brass angels adorn the sanctuary at St.
Columcille. One reverencing the brass image
of the Risen Christ and one adores the
Eucharistic Lord in the Tabernacle. I want to
thank the donor of the two new angels, which
like the cherubim that accompanied the
Tabernacle through the desert with Moses and
the people of Israel, now model for each of
reverence for Christ in the Tabernacle at
Immaculate Conception.
