Dear Parishioners,
There are many people who are overburdened in our world right now. Some are anxious about the COVID virus and wondering when things will return to normal. Others are working from home and wondering whether they will have to teach their children from home again — praying for the opening of school. Others are suffering from serious illnesses and are terrified that they will be infected and not be able to respond well. Our nation is still roiled by protests, racism, and controversy over police, social order, and defense of businesses. Jesus’ words, “Come to me, all you who are weary and find life burdensome, and I will refresh you,” could not come at a better time. Often we only hear this reading at funerals or wakes. This weekend, Jesus offers His wisdom, His consolation, and His willingness to bear all of these burdens — and more — with us!
I hope you are able to enjoy the summer even if it is very different this year. Remember that the COVID pandemic limits us, but it also gives us the opportunity to reflect on how we want life — our life — to be different now and after this is over. Much as we are plagued, we are also given the opportunity to rethink, renovate, and renew ourselves, our families, our churches, and our way of life. The Savior predicted in Zechariah catches people by surprise. He is “meek and riding on a colt.” This is not what people expected of their Messiah. So, too, God can bring blessings, good, and even miracles out of this time that we did not anticipate.
Fr. Jerry Francik

XIV domingo del tiempo ordinario

Estimados feligreses,

Wisdom Sayings from the Sisters of St. Joseph
– Sisters Cealy, Karen, and Mary Beth
Maxim 34: “Take care that God alone be the end and the beginning
of all your undertakings.”
• Before each action, I ask God to purify my motives.
• I ask myself, “Will the words I am about to say or the action I am about to perform witness to a God of Love?”
• I remember that all of creation is God’s gift to me. I am entitled to nothing.
God our Father, Giver of life, we entrust the United States of America to Your loving care.
You are the rock on which this nation was founded. You alone are the true source of our cherished rights
to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Reclaim this land for Your glory and dwell among Your people. Send Your Spirit to touch the hearts of our nation’s leaders. Open their minds to the great
worth of human life and the responsibilities that accompany human freedom. Remind Your people that
true happiness is rooted in seeking and doing Your will. Through the intercession of Mary Immaculate,
Patroness of our land, grant us the courage to reject the “culture of death.” Lead us into a new millennium of life. We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Religious Education
Dear Parents,
I am aware of everyone’s concern for the next session of Religious Education lessons that are scheduled to begin in September. Please be assured that you can safely register your children for classes knowing that all necessary precautions will be taken. If there are times when we are not able to have classes in person, I will have lessons taught by our catechists and myself, and we will make them available for you online each week for easy access at home. The Pflaum company that publishes our weekly lessons has already created the lessons in a digital format for us.
Online registrations and much more information will be available in the week ahead. Please register for the classes soon to help us acquire the needed materials and prepare our catechists. Stay well, and I look forward to our growing in our Catholic faith when we resume our children’s religion classes! ~ Sister Cecilia

Vacation Bible School
Climb Aboard for Rocky Railway VBS! At this summer’s VBS, kids of all ages can travel with us
(safely, from a distance) at Rocky Railway and explore
Jesus’ power in them and how we can trust Jesus — not
our own strength — to pull us through life’s challenges.
COVID-19 has come through our lives like a freight train
and derailed countless plans, routines, and expectations.
This summer, more than ever, the children in our parish
community need the hope, reassurance, and abundance
of God’s love through the unique ministry of VBS.
HOW will this work?
Parish staff, seminarians, priests, and your favorite VBS
leaders from past years have been working hard to create
a video-based Vacation Bible School experience that
your children can participate in safely from home. We
are doing our best to make it clever and entertaining as
well as faith-filled, with all of the usual daily colors,
themes, music, and everything else that makes VBS such
a delight each year! All VBS videos will be available at
the parish website and at YouTube, and your children can
watch and participate in activities such as:
Sing & Play Express • Imagination Station
Bible Adventures • KidVid™ Cinema • Caboose Crafts
Chew Chew Snacks • Loco Motion Games
Check out our conductor Sister Cecilia’s welcome video!
WHEN is VBS?
Our target VBS date is the week of August 3-7, but your
family can participate at any time.
“Rock out” at Rocky Railway! One of the best parts about every VBS is the award-
winning music! Rocky Railway has fun, uplifting songs
that your kids (and you!) will want to listen to again and
again — sure to become a new family fave!
Experiencing God’s Word At Rocky Railway, one memorable Bible Point is
reinforced throughout each daily activity — making it
easy to apply long after VBS is over, and the Bible points
are very relevant for our current times.
Example from DAY 1:
Jesus’ power helps us do hard things. Trust Jesus!
“For I can do everything through Christ,
who gives me strength.” Phil 4:13
Bible story: Ananias helps Saul. (Acts 9:1-19)
HOW can my family participate? If your family would like to have the inspirational VBS
music CD and the official VBS supplies and materials,
you can sign up easily online with a $20 fee per family at
www.shgparish.org/vbs.
You can sample the music and get a video overview of
Rocky Railway VBS on that same webpage
(www.shgparish.org/vbs). OR if you prefer, simply tune
in to VBS for free and participate in the videos any time
in August at www.shgparish.org/vbs.
All are welcome to participate! Do you have relatives
or friends from out of state or even out of the country
who might be interested? Invite them to join us!

Laudato si’ Year for the Catholic Church
To commemorate the fifth anniversary of his encyclical Laudato si’, Pope Francis announced that the period between May 24, 2020 and May 24, 2021 will be designated as Laudato si’ Year for the Catholic Church, and he released a special prayer. During this year, Sacred Heart Parish will provide weekly excerpts from the encyclical with reflection questions as a way for parishioners to participate in this global commemoration. To read and reflect on the full encyclical, click below:
Laudato si’ in English • Laudato si’ in Spanish
Pollution, waste and the throwaway culture: Each year hundreds of millions of tons of waste are generated, much of it non-biodegradable, highly toxic, and radioactive — from homes and businesses, from construction and demolition sites, from clinical, electronic, and industrial sources. The earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth. (LS #21)
• This week, notice how you participate in the “throwaway” culture. What paper and plastic items do you use once and throw away?
• Take a walk in your neighborhood on trash day. Remind yourself that most of this trash will end up in a landfill somewhere. There is no “away” to throw anything.
Holy Innocents Ministry to Families

Others are welcome to attend and pray for the families or for past pregnancy loss.
There will also be a Holy Innocents Ministry’s Vespers Service on Sunday, November 1 from 4:00 ‒ 6:00 PM at Our Lady of Victory Parish (4414 Wilkens Avenue in Catonsville). Quo Vadis Summer Days for High School Boys
Quo Vadis Days offer high school aged young men a unique opportunity.
Join Fr. Steven Roth and the seminarians of the Archdiocese of Baltimore in a series of one-day events held at
various locations around the Archdiocese. Meet other high school aged young men and explore what it
means to answer the universal Christian call to holiness. Play hard and pray hard! Grow in your faith
together through prayer and small group discussions, participate in sports and activities, and share in meals
and fellowship with other like-minded young men your age. Social distancing will be enforced.
Click here to view the promotional Quo Vadis video.
Quo Vadis will be held in 6 different locations this year — you pick the day and location to register.
Registration is at https://www.bmorevocations.org/quo-vadis/fiat-qv-camps/.
EACH COUNTY’S MOST CURRENT GUIDELINES
WILL BE FOLLOWED THROUGHOUT QUO VADIS DAYS.
Goal: To have young men ask substantial questions about what is most important in their lives.
What is Quo Vadis? Quo Vadis is a three-day encounter for high school aged boys — hosted by the
seminarians of the Archdiocese — aimed at helping them mature in their faith, deepen their desire for
holiness, and explore the particular vocation through which God is calling them to pursue holiness. Quo
Vadis doesn’t just aim to recruit men to the priesthood. Quo Vadis aims to encourage young men to
respond with generosity in freedom to what God is calling them to do with their lives.
What should you expect? Three days of talks, prayer, and fraternity that will help each young man
learn where they can find meaning in their life. Three days with priests, seminarians, and other young
men who are trying to follow Christ. Three days of peace and relaxation away from the past months of
Zooming for school and stressors of pandemic family life to help each young man see the places where
God is working in his life.
Who is this for? Quo Vadis isn’t just for young men who are considering a priestly vocation. Quo
Vadis is for any young man who wants Christ and the Church to be a part of his life. This is an encounter
for young men in the Archdiocese who want to strengthen their relationship with Christ and the Church
and would like to spend time with other young men, seminarians, and priests who want to do the same.
What Quo Vadis isn’t: This is not a summer day camp for recruiting future priests. Our goal is to give
a young man a few days’ time to think, pray, and reflect on how God works in his life and on how he will
build on that foundation going forward. When or if the question of vocation arises, it will be because
the young man himself has discovered it being proposed to him from within.
Parental involvement: Quo Vadis works best when it involves the whole family. Our hope is that
Quo Vadis will help families to see that talk of God, the Church, and vocation is something thoroughly
normal — not something uncomfortable or extraordinary.
Let us know what support you need. If you need more information about the encounter, or if
there are financial constraints or special circumstances that might prevent a young man from attending,
we are here to help. We want any young man who wants to attend Quo Vadis to be able to do so.
