In addition to very practical information on the financial side of college, two articles spoke about what a student needs to do to thrive in the world after high school:“The College Chase: CriticalThinking Matters” and “Beyond Books: Students’ readiness isn’t purely academic.” My bullets below capture the essence of some of the points that stood out for me.I think it would be interesting to “check in” as a family on these ideas and see where you and your student stand: Students should read a daily newspaper.Reading the paper encourages thinking critically and arouses curiosity about the world around us. It also promotes quantitative literacy because of the inclusion of statistics that apply to the real world. Instead of taking the summer off, one director from the University of Michigan, believes it is critical for students to keep reading! Don’t throw away the high school texts and notes. These can be incredibly useful to a student during his/her college years. Get involved in extracurricular activities that relate to a student’s interests. This is true both in high school and in college. If there is an interest in a future in accounting, serve as treasurer in an organization. If there is an interest in science, math, engineering and/or communications, consider participating in robotics. School, however, should ALWAYS be the top priority for 40 or more hours a week. With 30 hours of class in high school, are our students supplementing their “work week” with at least 10 hours of homework? And, once in college, will our new collegiate be able to prioritize and manage the time and freedom in order to make college their “full time job?” Use the resources that are available. One admissions officer from MSU says, that the most successful student is the one who can accurately self-assess and seek help when struggling or in need.We could say the same for our high schoolers. And, in both institutions, help is always available to those who reach out for it.Is your student doing this? Abandon being a“helicopter parent” and let the student learn to resolve issues on his/her own.A former dean from Stanford says,“...helicopter parents are wrecking a generation of children by solving all of their problems for them, controlling their experiences, and over-scheduling them.”We might ask ourselves, even in high school, how we can better equip our young people to learn to cope and think for themselves. Are we building in these experiences in small, incremental ways so that they will be prepared when they head off for college? Finally, help develop resiliency, as failure and disappointments are bound to accompany a transition to college, much as they do throughout our lives.A suggestion from an Admissions Director at U of M recommends that parents share a time when they failed with their children and how they handled it. There is no doubt that the thought of leaving high school and going to college brings trepidation for both parent and student. This is only natural and it is a feeling that can, if we let it, trap and mire us down. With a few shifts in dynamics and some practical advice, however,we can all be better prepared to face the future with full confidence that our students can handle it! Congratulations to our seniors who are well-prepared to leave us and succeed. To our underclass students, enjoy the summer, but remember to READ, stay involved, remain curious and keep the mind active! And,to the parent who is looking for a book to read on how to help young people develop the life skills they need, try How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Over-parenting trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success by Julie Lythcott-Haims. Thanks for a fantastic year and see you in the fall! Sincerely, Janet P.Wasko,Principal [email protected]
