Already our group does several fraternal activities each year among these; barbecues, ball games, and family picnics but there is more to come. I propose a series of carry-in meals before meetings, and card games or other activities to follow. I am also open to any other suggestions you may have, if it is a fun fraternal activity suggest it, and we’ll get it done. Key to having fraternal time is keeping our business meetings brief and businesslike. I am working to achieve a meeting no longer than 45 minutes so that most of our time may be spent fraternally. There are also other opportunities to serve our church that I’d like to propose. Primarily among these is service to our parish families (the family activity chair is open and waiting for someone to step up) in which we are somewhat lacking. At our many parishes volunteers are needed for youth programs. I would also like to consider working to organize a young parents’ mass, an opportunity for young parents to attend mass and reflect while we handle the constant distractions of their very young children. The possibilities are practically endless we need only the enthusiasm to act. In the coming months we will be undertaking to contact all of our brother knights to inquire how they would like to be involved in parish and fraternal activities. Look for an initial E-mail with many opportunities which I will ask you to kindly reply to. Your interests will be sent to the several service chairmen so that they may contact you with opportunities to serve. GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE— JOSH BRUEGGEN, GRAND KNIGHT

Involvement

Brother Knights,

We are all busy men. Our lives are filled with activity; work, family, activities too numerous to possibly

name here. Perhaps the activity we most rarely schedule is time for ourselves to reflect upon ourselves and our

faith. Luckily this time comes pre-scheduled every Sunday (or Saturday as you prefer) for us to attend mass

and attempt to find a moment of quiet in our lives. Now, I ask you to consider spending more time reflecting

fraternally with your brother knights as well.

There is much need for our limited time, and in that vein I intend to put forth several proposals which will

allow our brothers to multi-task some service opportunities along with fraternal time, or family and leisure time

as well. Already our group does several fraternal activities each year among these; barbecues, ball games, and

family picnics but there is more to come. I propose a series of carry-in meals before meetings, and card games

or other activities to follow. I am also open to any other suggestions you may have, if it is a fun fraternal

activity suggest it, and we’ll get it done. Key to having fraternal time is keeping our business meetings brief

and businesslike. I am working to achieve a meeting no longer than 45 minutes so that most of our time may be

spent fraternally.

There are also other opportunities to serve our church that I’d like to propose. Primarily among these is

service to our parish families (the family activity chair is open and waiting for someone to step up) in which we

are somewhat lacking. At our many parishes volunteers are needed for youth programs. I would also like to

consider working to organize a young parents’ mass, an opportunity for young parents to attend mass and reflect

while we handle the constant distractions of their very young children. The possibilities are practically endless

we need only the enthusiasm to act.

In the coming months we will be undertaking to contact all of our brother knights to inquire how they would

like to be involved in parish and fraternal activities. Look for an initial E-mail with many opportunities which I

will ask you to kindly reply to. Your interests will be sent to the several service chairmen so that they may

contact you with opportunities to serve. Do not think that by ignoring these opportunities that you will get out

of this though…….I’ll call you personally if I have to…..but my time is at least as limited as yours. Our

DEACON’S QUESTION BOX

What is Bodily Participation at Mass (Part 1)?

Last month, I talked about the need for our

complete participation in the Mass; body and soul.

This month, we want to start looking at some of the

ways our body should participate at Mass. Some of

the things we will look at we already do but

perhaps don’t think about them much. Other

actions we will look at have somehow been

forgotten over the past few decades.

As we enter into the Church, the first thing we

should do is to dip our fingers into the holy water

and then make the sign of the cross. Have you

considered why you do that? There are three

reasons for doing this.

First, making the sign of the cross with holy

water should remind us of our own baptism and the

promises that were made for us by our parents or

that we made if we were baptized as an adult.

The day of our baptism was a great day. It was

the day when we, or our parents or sponsors for us,

renounced Satan, professed faith in Christ, and

were initiated into the mystery of the Holy Trinity.

At that moment all our sins were forgiven: original

and actual, and we became children of God, filii in

Filio (‘sons in the Son’), and heirs of the promise,

daring now to call God our Father.

The holy water and our remembering of the

baptismal promises should remind us to be sorry

for our sins. When there is the rite of sprinkling in

the liturgy, we always sing the Asperges, which

means ‘you will sprinkle or wash’. They should

bring to mind the words of Psalm 50: “You will

sprinkle me with hyssop and I shall be cleansed:

you will wash me, and I shall be made whiter than

snow.”

Holy water is a sacramental. Sacramentals act as

protection against the snares of the devil. The old

prayer for the blessing of holy water said: "O God,

creator of unconquered power, King of invincible

empire and victor ever-great: who put down the

powers of hostile dominion and conquer the fury of

the roaring enemy, who fight powerfully against

our wicked foes: trembling we beseech you, O

Lord, we implore you and beg you: that you might

graciously look upon this creature of water and

salt, kindly illumine it, sanctify it with the dew of

your loving kindness, so that wherever it is

sprinkled, through the invocation of your holy

Name, every infestation of the unclean spirit be

cast out, and the terror of the poisonous serpent be

driven far away. And may the presence of the Holy

Spirit deign to be with us always, we who implore

your mercy."

When you dip your hand into the holy water

font, remember these things, and like Our Lady,

treasure them in your heart.

Feel free to drop me a question for this column.

2014 Annual Charitable Golf Outing

On Sat. July 19th

, Allouez Council along with

St. Ambrose Council held our Annual Charitable

Golf Outing at Highland Springs Golf Course,

Rock Island. While we only had three teams enter

from Allouez Council, St. Ambrose had ten,

resulting with (13) teams total, far short of the (25)

teams required for a Shot Gun Start. I am pleased

to report that Allouez Council had (18) Hole

Sponsors, including two holes sponsored by

Brother Knight Wayne Valentine in honor of his

father, Sir Knight John Valentine, bringing

income of $1850.00; and we had (29) Door Prize

sponsors providing prizes to every Golfer. Listed

below are the Hole & Door Prize Sponsors for this

year. A special gratitude is extended to Securitas

Security Services for their $25 Gift Card donation

in “Memory of our Co-worker & wonderful

Friend Patrick Schmid”, our recently deceased

Brother Knight & Warden. A real tribute to

Brother Schmid!! Please utilize these Sponsors

services and thank them for helping us help

others!!!

Thanks to St. Ambrose Council & their Golf

Outing Committee for allowing us to be part of

this great event in the past and again this year!!

INSURANCE AGENT’S MESSAGE

Long-Term Care Plans Offer Peace of Mind

Since its addition to the Order’s product

portfolio in 2000, long-term care (LTC) insurance

has provided the Knights of Columbus with an

excellent opportunity to further serve members and

their families. And, for our long-term care policy

holders in the United States, there’s an added

bonus.

It’s called “Provider Pathway,” a program

offering access to a network of long-term care

providers at discounted rates. The network includes

discounts on products, such as hearing aids,

diabetic supplies, personal emergency response

systems, and durable medical equipment, as well as

skilled nursing facilities, assisted living, and adult

day care.

Eligibility for participation in this program is

open to Knights of Columbus long-term care

insurance policyholders, their spouses, dependent

children, parents and parents-in-law. All providers

are fully credentialed and meet state licensing

requirements.

If you haven’t yet spoken with me about long-

term care insurance, you owe it to yourself to do

so. There are a few decisions to make in choosing a

“plan” — a comprehensive plan that covers care

whether you’re at home or in a facility, or one that

covers facility only; daily benefit amounts and

benefit durations (how much and how long it will

last); and the length of the elimination period

(waiting period) before benefits kick-in. Having a

professionally trained agent ― and a brother

Knight you can trust ― to help guide you through

the process is yet another valuable benefit that

comes with your membership. Take advantage of

it; contact me today. JEFF SCHAECHER, (309) 793-4218
