Two thumbs up for Richard Davis In an article on The Daily Finance called "This Is One Incredible CEO," Sean Williams shows the things Richard has done, but also the things he "hasn’t" done to lead U.S. Bancorp to exceptional results. Williams is known for pointing out CEO faux pas, but his readers asked for something positive: enter U.S. Bancorp Chairman, President and CEO Richard Davis, and our company. U.S. Bank donates $100,000 to Portland Public Schools’ Early Learners Academy The Early Learners Academy in northwest Portland offers educational programming for preschoolers in an area with limited options for families with young children. The donation comes at a time when the Portland Public School District, like others across the state, faces a significant gap between its operating budget and its ability to maintain current service levels.

U.S. Bank tops the charts Money magazine has named U.S. Bank the best national bank in America for our basic checking and savings, student checking and senior checking accounts. The "Best Banks in America" story is in the October 2012 issue of Money magazine. Money credited U.S. Bank’s broad retail banking network—fourth-largest in the country—combined with how easy it is for U.S. Bank customers to waive the monthly maintenance fee. U.S. Bank also topped Money’s charts for student and senior checking. Read the full press release on usbank.com.

Pam Joseph and WLA help African girls American Banker profiled Vice Chairman of Payments Pam Joseph for extending her passion for developing others beyond the reach of traditional mentoring programs. Several of the women have traveled to Kenya and seen firsthand the impact of their efforts. Read the full story on American Banker's website.

Barron’s list of 100 Most Respected Companies – we’re 35th! Each year, Barron’s surveys money managers about their views of the world’s largest companies. The latest results are in…and we ranked #35 on the list! To complete the survey, participants were asked to select one of four statements reflecting their view of each company: Highly Respect, Respect, Respect Somewhat, or Don't Respect. Point values were assigned to each response, with the highest accorded to Highly Respect. A mean score was also tabulated for each company. View the full article and the list of 100 Most Respected Companies.

U.S. Bancorp ranked a “Most Admired” company…again! Fortune Magazine released its 2012 "World’s Most Admired Companies" report, and we have much to celebrate! For the second year in a row, U.S. Bancorp was named the No. 1 most-admired superregional bank! We led the superregional bank category in five of the nine categories, including people management, use of corporate assets, quality of management, financial soundness and long-term investment.

Curt Tigard was nominated by his former colleagues to be recognized as one of outstanding alumni. Curt’s 36-year career began in 1935 at U.S. National Bank. He held various leadership roles at branches in Portland, Albany and Tigard. In 1940, the Army called him to active duty where he proudly served in North Africa, Italy and even Hollywood, California where he produced an amphibious training film for the Marine Corps. Curt returned to the bank after the war and was appointed assistant vice president. He is proud to have worked for the bank and credits his success to the incredible people he worked with over the years. He was unanimously described as an inspiration with his joie de vivre, energy, and kindness. He always made the time to offer advice and guidance to his team. Curt and his precious wife Julia celebrated over 50 years of marriage before her passing in 1998. He treasures wonderful memories of their travels to many continents. Curt is very proud of his son David and enjoys spending time with his two grandsons. Curt is the grandson of Wilson Tigard, founder of the City of Tigard, Ore. Curt’s grandfather brought his family to the area in 1852 and opened a general store in what is now the City of Tigard. In 2009, the City honored Curt with a 100th birthday party at the Tigard Public Library. He celebrated his 103rd birthday on April 12, 2012. Curt still plays golf on a weekly basis.

Carolyn Osten was honored at the Portland Alumni Event on Oct. 10, 2012. Her 37-year career began right out of high school at the Springfield branch as a proof operator and bookkeeper. She spent several years as branch secretary before her husband was called to active duty in the Army and transferred to Washington, D.C. Living in our nation’s capital was an exciting time for Carolyn. Before long she found herself working at the Pentagon as secretary to a four-star general. She loved working at the hub of our nation’s military activity. Carolyn’s position as branch secretary was waiting for her when she returned to Oregon. She quickly advanced to leadership roles such as operations specialist at the Tigard branch and branch manager at Kruse Way. Carolyn’s former employees will tell you she was the best mentor. She is grateful for the wonderful memories and close friends she made during her time at the bank. Carolyn is very proud of her daughter and son and enjoys spending time with her three grandsons. She loves to travel and has enjoyed trips to Hawaii, Australia, and New Zealand. Her Scandinavian cruise is at the top of her list. Carolyn also plays golf and is on a bowling league, where she holds a 160 average. Carolyn is responsible for the success of the West Side of Portland semi-annual luncheons and newsletters for the last nine years!

Curt, thank you for your years of dedication and service to U.S. Bank.

Carolyn, thank you for your service and continued loyalty to U.S. Bank.

On May 20, 2012, Portland alumni and current U.S. Bank employees gathered at the Oregon Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross. The day was spent preparing totes of supplies for use during blood drives. Alumni volunteers have a new appreciation for the "small item" tasks of the Red Cross. Thanks to our volunteers: Pat Dobbins, Lothar "Ernst" Paesler and Bill Carver. We are proud to call you alumni! Lauren Grube, Volunteer Services Manager of the American Red Cross, sent a special thank you letter to our volunteers. The American Red Cross could not serve its mission to save lives if it weren’t for the volunteers.

Throughout the month of October, military care package items were collected from U.S. Bank employees and customers. On Nov. 8, 2012, Oregon Alumni and current USB employees worked side by side at Columbia Center. They packed 95 large shipping boxes destined for Oregon and Washington state military members stationed overseas. Bill Carver said, "It was a wonderful day and it was great to be part of this project. We took pride in knowing we made a difference for military personnel over the holiday season."
