A message From the Rex

Greetings Alumnus,
On behalf of the VA OZ
chapter of Pi Lambda Phi, I would
like to thank you for taking the time
to read this newsletter. We hope to
continually extend the communica-
tions between the undergraduate
and alumni brothers and embody
the motto we all have engrained in
us, Not Four Years, But a Lifetime.
Inside this issue, we are
excited to share our success during
the formal spring recruitment
2
period, invite you to the Alumni
Weekend in April, ask for your help
in supporting our Spring Raffle
fundraiser, show pictures of the
Fraternity House we will be
occupying in Oak Lane next year,
tell you about our accomplishments
in Delta Gamma’s Anchor Splash
philanthropy for Service for Sight,
and touch on our social media.
Our chapter at Virginia
Tech now consists of 60 active
brothers and 18 new members and
3
is steadily growing and improving to
becoming a Greek powerhouse on
campus. We would not be here
today without the foundation you
laid before us.

This year’s spring recruitment was a huge success. We held new and
exciting rush events such as a cookout with a live band on campus, paintball,
shooting range, on campus poker tournament for an iPad mini, cigar night,
moonlight bowling, and a lasagna and salad feast at closed rush.
Overall, we had over 100 names on our names list and over 75
unique rushes that attended at least one rush event. Of those 75 rushes, 80%
of them came out to 2 or more rush events. As the end of the second week
approached, we invited 28 potential new members to attend, of which 27
attended. We extended bids to 22 individuals and 18 accepted their bids.
We are extremely pleased with our new member class. Members of
the Beta Mu pledge class are pursuing majors in BIT, Biochemistry,
Biological Sciences, Building Construction, HNFE, Industrial Design,
Political Science, Psychology, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical
Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial and Systems Engineering,
Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering, General Engineering, and
University Studies and boast an average GPA of 3.1.

Tentatively, everyone will be arriving at different times Friday night. We plan to do a Percentage Night from 5
P.M. - 9 P.M. at T. Flynn's Pub and/or P.K.'s Bar and Grill. For those of you that do not know, a Percentage Night is a
fundraising arrangement where a restaurant agrees to donate a percentage of the sales on a designated night for all the
customers that Pi Lambda Phi brings to their business. The plan is to use one of these locations as a meeting place for
the night to then head downtown to other establishments (TOTS) as the night progresses.
Saturday Morning at 9 A.M., we will be hosting the 17th Annual VA-OZ Golf Tournament at Castle Rock
Golf Club in Pembroke VA. The golf course is a thirty-minute drive from Blacksburg, so brothers will meet the alumni
at a location TBD (most likely the Inn at Virginia Tech parking lot) to drive and lead the groups to the golf
course. Participation in the golf tournament will cost every alumnus a minimum of $35 with additional charges
to participate in the Long Drive Competition, Closest to the Pin Competition, and Mulligans.
The Banquet Dinner, Award Ceremony, and Charity Raffle will be Saturday Evening, 5 P.M. - 8 P.M., at the
River Company Restaurant and Brewery in Fairlawn VA. Brothers and pledges will meet the alumni at a
location TBD thirty minutes prior to the event to provide rides for everyone to/from the banquet location. At $45 per
plate, the Banquet will include a great meal with your choice of entree: 10 oz. Sirloin or North Atlantic Salmon - 7
oz. For the banquet, you are more than welcome to bring a "plus one". A cash bar will be available during the event,
but please do not influence the underage brothers to drink. (They are our drivers, and we will need them) The rest of the
Banquet will include speeches from brothers about the state of Chapter, an Award Ceremony unveiling a new Golf
Tournament Plaque that will be displayed in the New Oak Lane House, and the Banquet will finish with the Charity
Raffle. (I am still looking for more items for the raffle) We should arrive back to Blacksburg after the Banquet around
8:30-9:00 allowing plenty of time to go downtown for the night.

Delta Gamma’s Anchor Splash 2013
This year, Pi Lambda Phi took overall 2nd place in DG’s annual philanthropy
for Service for Sight. We bested 34 other fraternities to capture the title by
donating almost $1000, competing in the swimming competition, coming in
2nd place at Mr. and Mrs. Anchor Splash, and performing at the talent show.
Our talent show performance is both on our website as well as our Facebook
page for your enjoyment. Two of our pledges, Jason Eller and Alay Tedla,
sang a heart smashing parody of Katie Perry’s California Gurls.

Hometown: Ashburn, VA Major: Mechanical Engineering Standing: Junior Big: Austin Moser Current Positions: Pledge Marshall, Sports Chair, and Philanthropy Chair. Biggest Accomplishment?
My biggest personal accomplishment in this Fraternity was organizing and motivating the brotherhood as Sports Chair to win us the Hokie Grail in intramural sports for the 2012 – 2013 academic year.

2013 – 2014 Fraternity House This upcoming fall, the brothers of Pi Lambda Phi at Virginia Tech will be moving into the 35-bed fraternity house located in the Oak Lane Greek Community. The house sits right alongside the fourth hole of the Virginia Tech Golf Course and across from the lovely ladies of AXO.
Along with the house come many new fixed and variable costs to the fraternity. Every year, we are responsible for paying an $11,000 parlor fee to live in the house, and we are responsible for paying almost $4,000 for each bed we are unable to fill in a given semester. As such, we are actively trying to re-establish good relations with our alumni to seek out interest in being part of our Housing Corporation, gain knowledge and insight to help us think of creative ways to finance ourselves without dramatically raising dues, and acquire small, yearly donations to help us along the way.
This first year is critical to our continued growth in the Greek and Virginia Tech community and for the prospect of keeping the house for future years. We have finally been given the opportunity to live with 35 of our closest friends, and we are doing everything in our power to meet our financial obligations. We’re happy to spend a year without furniture, but we would rather not start out with thousands of dollars in debt. If you would like to help, please participate in the Spring Raffle mentioned earlier as all profits will be going directly to the Housing Fund.
