ReceptionTraditions

• First ToastThe best man prepares the first toast after the wedding party has been served. This is then followed by toasts from other relatives, friends and the bride or groom.

• Cake cuttingThe couple cut the cake, hand over handand feed each other a small piece.

• First DanceThe newly weds dance the first dance as guests watch. You can opt for sweet and romantic or a lively showstopper. A little preperation is advised! Schedule professional dance lessons well in advance of your wedding - you could even put on a small performance to a music medley to entertain your loved ones and give them a giggle!

• Customary DancesFollowing the first dance, the bride dances with her Father and the groom with his Mother. Other guests then join the dance floor.

• Bouquet ThrowThe bride throws a small bouquet over her shoulder to a waiting group of single women. According to tradition, the woman who catches the bouquet will be the next to walk down the aisle!

• Garter TossThe groom removes the bride’s garter from her leg and tosses it to a waiting group of bachelors. According to tradition the lucky recipient will be the next groom.

Earlier this year, glamorous calendar girls strutted their stuff in a bid to be the new Miss Plymouth Sweetheart 2015/16. This issue of Always & Forever’s beautiful bridal model - Nicola Gallacher was crowned that prestigious title at the glitzy beauty pageant. Organised by beauty queen and university student Ayo Sokale, a recent Miss Plymouth Galaxy winner, the hopefuls all gathered at the Grosvenor Casino – and raised £1,405.29 for Derriford Children’s Cancer Service in the process.

The Derriford Children’s Cancer Service (DCCS) looks after children with cancer and leukaemia who live in Plymouth, West Devon and East Cornwall, they also support families of the children through the heartache caused by this awful disease. Nicola is raising vital awareness for this self funded charity, who rely heavily on fundraising. They are currently raising money to build accommodation for parents and families to stay near to their children who are suffering with the condition. If you feel you can contribute in any way, please visit: www.plymouthhospitals.nhs.uk/ourservices/cancerservices/dccs

Flowers

What To Ask...• How do they ensure the flowers will last? some florists take extra steps, such as camouflaging bouquet holders to boost longevity.

• What are appropriate substitutions if a flower becomes unavailable? Each flower is suited to a particular time of the year, talk about the look, size and price at your initial meeting so you won’t be surprised. Florists are amazing at perfecting an arrangement with any number of flowers.

I N S P I R A T I O N

• When will the flowers arrive? To prevent wilting, you want the flowers to arrive as close to start time as possible.

• Who is responsible for set up and take down of decor flowers? Sometimes this is included, other times there is an extra fee. Make sure you know who is doing what and when.

TRENDING Pair navy, pinks, oranges and coral with a soft, neutral colour palettes like blush, champagne, beige and ivory.

The Options...• PlatedThe most traditional option which allows guests to have sophisticated, sit down, multi-course meals.

• BuffetA great way to allow guests to pick and choose from a variety of nibbles. This is not necessarily cheaper than a sit down meal as guests could help themselves to multiple servings.

• Food StationA fun way to offer guests a selection. You could choose a unique theme, but make sure you provide a ‘safe’ option to suit all taste buds!

• Informal CookingPerfect for a casual, relaxed affair, such as a bbq, picnic or hog roast. Make sure you have the adequate facilities to pull it off and find a way to prevent pesky critters from enjoying the food as well!

• CanapésCan be elegant and trendy, but better suited for a welcome treat rather than a main event as guests could end up feeling hungry and disappointed.

TRENDINGSmall, cute appetisers such as afternoon teas are very popular in addition to plated meals. Couples are also opting for personal menus that are meaningful to their families e.g. cuisines from around the world.

2. The photos that are most important to you will be:A. The ones that tell the story of your dayB. Posed group photos and just you - the happy coupleC. Dramatic shots that will make incredible art for your home

3. You want photos of you and your new spouse that:A. Capture you naturally as you are: interacting by laughing, shedding tears of joy, cuddling, kissing and dancingB. Show you perfectly posed to look your bestC. Make you look like rock stars on your big day

4. How much involvement do you want your photographer to have on your wedding day:A. I barely want to see them, I just want to enjoy the day with my family and friendsB. A fair amount, I want the photographer to tell me where to stand and what to doC. A lot, I want high fashion and high drama - and a photographer to run the show

Q U I Z

InvitationsIN IT IAL CONSULTATION

What To Bring/Know...• All details important to your wedding (locations and addresses, dates, times, directions, accommodations etc).• Your budget.• Colour swatches.• Whether you are having a buffet or if your RSVP will need a food selection.• An idea of the text you would like on your invitations (your stationer will guide you).

• You may want to add a personal touch with a poem, quotes or special graphics.• Who will be hosting (her parents, you as a couple or both sets of parents).• Images of your theme, or ideas you like.• Estimated quantity of invitations. (remember inviting couples and families means the number of invitations needed will be less than the number of guests).

TRENDING: Gold is back! Gold foil and gold embellishments. Laser cutting is also popular, especially with thick, textured papers.

Page 19: Always & Forever Issue 15

www.alwaysandforevermag.com 19

What To Ask...• May I see samples of your work? Stationers should have plenty of examples of their work, not only for you to see the quality of the craftsmanship, but also to get ideas for your own invitations.

• When should I place my order? Stationers typically suggest five to six months before your wedding for invitations and nine to twelve months for save the dates. Any later and there may not be much time for production. Make sure all details are in place before you order e.g. date, time, location etc).

• How should I word my invitations? Wording can be tricky, depending on who is hosting. A good stationer should walk you through the process.

• What is the estimate of cost? An estimate is based on the number of pieces needed, quantity of items ordered, paper stock, embellishments used and level of complexity. Each stationer is different, so shop around for quotes and styles.

• May I see a proof before it is printed? It is essential to see a final proof to double check for errors before every thing goes to print.

• Anything else? In addition to save the dates and invitations, stationers can take care of other accessory needs such as table cards, table plans, order of services and thank you cards.
