If you look at book best seller lists, thrillers are always near the top. We love to escape into gripping stories which scare and mys-tify us. There’s now such a demand that there’s even a huge market for foreign thrillers, starting with Mankell’s Wallander series, and of course the incredible success of Stieg Larsson’s brilliant Millennium trilogy. If you go into a bookshop to-day, there’s whole shelves of Scandi-navian crime novels. To judge by The Whisperer, by Do-nato Carrisi, the Italians could be next. This book has been a huge bestseller across Europe. It’s pacy, it plays games with you, the plot is lab-yrinthine, the characters pleasingly strange. For my money, despite the excited blurbs on the back cover, it doesn’t have the writing class or sense of place and genuine nail-bitingness of Stieg Larsson’s books, but he was exceptional. The Whisperer is decent crime fiction, nicely creepy and with more twists and turns than a corkscrew. It starts with the gruesome discovery of six arms buried in a circle in a forest clearing. They belong to young girls who have been reported missing. But there are no bodies. So we have a serial killer; but there seems to be a parallel story going on which doesn’t click into place until the very end of the book. In the meantime you have to guess what it’s doing there. The reason for the book’s title also seems mystifying till the end, so I won’t give it away. But you’re a very clever reader if you guess the final revelations
