Wildlife week was celebrated in the School from

3rd to 5

th October, 2016. ‘Prakriti’, the Eco Club and the

‘Kala’, the Fine Arts Club came together to host a well-

received sketching and painting competition on 3rd October,

2016. The competition saw twelve participants sketching

and painting on the theme Wildlife. The event was also

attended by many budding artists and art enthusiasts from

the school who wanted to get glimpses of the various exem-

plary works of art that resulted.

The Quiz Club in association with Prakriti conducted a

Wildlife Quiz, on October 4th, 2016. Mr. Aditya Sai (S3,

ECE), a member of the club, hosted the event. The Quiz

covered the topics of forest welfare, animal facts,

endangered species and pop culture references featuring

animals. The top five winning teams of the previous

Animation quiz were also declared. Each member received

points corresponding to his/her rank. The session ended

with a discussion of answers and new facts were unveiled to

enlighten the participants. ‘Maardhani’, the literary club

conducted a debate on the theme of Wildlife, on October

5th, 2016. The event was a tribute to the Wildlife Week,

organised by Prakriti, the eco-club. The topics were related

to environmental concerns and animal rights, and brought

out different perspectives and rebuttal questions. Mr. Sriram

Ganesh (S5, ECE), Secretary, Maardhani ended the events

with an overview of the performances and tips to do better

in the forthcoming sessions.

Prakriti conducted a trip to Bannerghatta Biological Park on

the 23rd of October, 2016 as part of Wildlife Week to

observe the fauna present at the park. Over a hundred

participants, accompanied by Prakriti members, visited the

park and marveled at the park's wildlife. Prakriti members

expounded upon the importance of the preservation of in-

digenous flora and fauna of a region. The club members

also explained to the students that it is the duty of, not only

the Government, but, the citizens of India to help preserve

our country's native wildlife. The participants met with vari-

ous trainers and doctors of the park to learn more about the

distinct species that inhabit the land. After a whole day of

observing and interacting with the animals of the park, the

students returned to the campus with a greater understand-

ing of wildlife and a sense of responsibility to help sustain it.

The students of first year B.Tech. and M.Tech. at

Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru were engaged in

an interactive session by Br. Manoj who discussed the objec-

tive of the university, providing an education for life.

The first half of the session emphasised on the concept of

happiness, namely, the explicit essence of what happiness is,

why we should welcome happiness and how we can achieve

happiness. The session then transitioned to an analysis of

different forms of smiling, which, the students were told, is

considered as the highest form of meditation. In order to

understand and appreciate the depth of that statement, they

were taught a song, to which the students responded with

great delight and animation.

The latter half of the session expounded on the goal of Am-

rita University, 'Education for Life, rather than Education

for a Living'. Br. Manoj pointed out flaws in the thoughts of

teenagers of the present generation, who consider cinema

actors and sportspersons to be their role models. He also

explained that our parents are our real heroes, for it is their

sacrifice and hard work that made us what we are today. His

assertion was supported by a variety of videos to shed light

on the fact that teenagers must choose role models who

could aid them "for life" rather than be a "part of life".

Br. Manoj stated that anything that is just a part of life is

nothing but pure entertainment.

Br. Manoj concluded the session with the message of Mata

Amritanandamayi Devi, Chancellor, Amrita Vishwa

Vidyapeetham, that the essence of true love is the real back-

bone that moulds mere 'Education for a Living to Education

for Life'.

Bugster- A Code Debugging Challenge Round-2

Competitive programming can be considered a sport

for the mind where the participants attempt to code according

to provided specifications. FACE (The Forum for Aspiring

Computer Engineers) kick started the year with the first round

of 'Bugster', a code debugging challenge, on the 21st of Septem-

ber 2016.

Over 150 students from all branches and years came forward

to participate in the first round of the competition. Contestants

either took part solo or in teams of two. Questions based on

arrays, structures, pointers and dynamic programming were

posed to test the participants' conceptual understanding of C

Programming.

The second round of Bugster was conducted on the 27th of

October, 2016 for the twenty teams who had qualified the first

round. The contestants were asked to debug three questions

in the programming language C++, and they faced their

challenge with zeal and determination. They were tested on the

topics of files, pointers and Object Oriented Programming

concepts.

Participants were allowed to use compilers to test and execute

their codes. However, if they wished to surf the internet for

aid, they had to notify a FACE member and would face a

penalty.

The judging criteria were based upon the number of problems

solved and time spent for writing successful solutions. It also

included other factors like the quality of output produced,

execution time and program size.

Mr. Vinayak Hulabutti, Co-Founder & CMO at LabInApp.

Dr. Vishwas Lakkundi of IET Bengaluru chapter was present

in the event.

The first speaker Mr. Aniruddha, spoke about how the

“Internet of Things” is taking every conceivable industry by a

storm. He was of the opinion that education initiatives in IoT

should not limit to only technology training but also its

application. IoT in its nature is a design and innovation

paradigm, a framework that brings together a few old and new

technology breakthroughs to create business value - business

value being the key phrase. Most technologies grouped

under the IoT umbrella have existed in some shape or form a

fresh architecture and design construct (aided by a drop in

cost, size, and power consumption) has fuelled a slew of

transformative innovations. Understanding industry needs and

designing commensurate content is a start to how the content is

delivered will be equally critical. Students will need exposure to

the process of innovation and problem solving leading up to

the requisite value-add expected by their future employers and

clients.
