Prerana, the Social Outreach Club of the School organized ‘Swadeshi Bhojan’ in the campus on 21st December 2017 aimed at spreading the message of “Relish the taste of your culture”.

The event was started as per tradition with a prayer which was followed by offerings to the almighty. Then, 30 varieties of mouth-watering Indian snacks and sweets were laid out and distributed including famous dishes such as Halwa, Laddoo, Muruku and Obattu. The various items on the menu were catered by the students of the School itself who also briefed the audience of the origin of the dishes. Members of the club personally invited all the teachers of every department to join them for an afternoon of feasting. As the teachers queued up to taste the various dishes, students soon followed suit in order to savour the dishes on offer. The event culminated with the gathering appreciating the club’s effort in trying to educate them about the variety that lies in India’s growing food habits.

Amrita Club for Robotics and Mechatronics (ACROM) & IEEE RAS organized Sentience’17 - the annual Intra College Robotics Competition on the 22nd and 23rd of December, 2017. The competition was open to all the students from 1st year to 4th year B.Tech. and M.Tech.

There were two competitions. One was ‘LiFo’ (short for Line Follower) in which a robot had to autonomously follow the black line from the start till the finish line. The second competition was ‘Tron’ in which a manually controlled robot had to navigate a track with obstacles in shortest time. The event saw a registration of 31 teams, each of which consisted maximum of four members. The competition was declared open by Ms. S. Shali, Co-Chair Prachodhana, Co-Curricular Wing of Amritadhara and Mr. Rajeevlochana Chittawadigi, Dept of Mechanical Engineering, which was followed by Round-1 of ‘LiFo’ which was the elimination round. There were 2 rounds for both the competitions. The first day ended with Round-1 of both ‘LiFo’ and ‘Tron’ with the list of the best teams going to the final round on the second day. Overall the event was appreciated by the participants. The winning teams bagged an attractive amount of cash prize.

Race to Space Vyom, the Astrophysics club hosted a fun filled competitive event “Race To Space” on 29th December 2017 at

Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru. The event was conducted with an aim to provide a challenging atmosphere for the students to work on a model and bring out relevant solutions. The event comprised of two rounds and contestants were allowed to participate in teams of maximum three in number.

The participating teams were briefed about the guidelines of the event by Mr. Sohel Chungikar(S4-ME). The teams were assigned an exoplanet following which Mr. Anupam Vamsi Pedapudi (S4-ECE) gave the crowd a rough outline on the particulars of the exoplanet through a presentation. In the first round, the teams had to draft an idea as to why they had to have a space expedition to that particular exoplanet. The teams were judged based on their spontaneity, creativity and the understanding of the planet’s conditions. In the second round, the qualified teams were given a chance to justify their ideas. Their ideas were scrutinized by the Judge Dr. D. Praveen from the Department of Physics. The winners were declared and were rewarded with a chance to have a glimpse at the night sky with the School’s telescope in the near future.

He is an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Transportation Electrification, IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy, IEEE Journal of Emerging Selected Topics in Power Electronics, and IET Power Electronics. He has edited 3 special issues on Transportation Electrification on various IEEE Journals. The lecture was widely attended by Professors from various institutes. The main motive behind Dr. Rathore’s talk was to shed some light on the ability and superior performance of current-fed converters for low voltage and higher currents application as well as for applications requiring higher voltage amplification ratio. He spoke about the different converter topologies along with its merits, their issues, performance and efficiency. He also gave example of different applications that can be incorporated with these converters based on the requirements, such as: UPS, Fuel Cell Vehicle, Solar PV/Fuel Cell, DC Microgrid. Each topology presented by Dr. Rathore was experimentally done and proven along with the simulation results, thus providing the participants with a better insight and information regarding the topic. The lecture was highly appreciated by all the participants especially due to the weight of information provided by Dr. Rathore. A special shout out to IEEE-IAS chapter for helping to conduct this event and to also Dr. K. Deepa and all the student co-ordinators who were responsible in stirring the wheels of this event to a grand success.

Mech-charades and Creative Description- INGENIUM and LEKHANI Club Activity

An event for all the inner geeks to be creative and spin a story, Mech-charades and Creative description, was held in collaboration with Lekhani ,the press club of our college, on 27th December 2017. The secretary of INGENIUM Lalithkumar D. (S6-ME) hosted the event.

Mech-charades, be the master of rapid answers, was a team event, where participants had to enigmatically describe the mechanical components to their partner within the time limits. The onerous description of components made getting right answers out of their partner like getting blood out of a stone. Creative description, another event for the participants, got the lyricist and fantasist out of everyone. Day to day used mechanical components became the muse for the hidden Marrett and Marcus in each participant. Students took part in the events with great fervour.

Mr. Arjun Bharadwaj

Co-authored Book titled "Stories Behind verses", was released on 3rd December 2017 at the Indian Institute of World Culture, Bangalore by Smt. Sudha Murty (Head, Infosys Foundation) and Dr. S. R. Leela (Sanskrit scholar). The book is an English adaptation of Shatavadhani, originally written by Dr. R. Ganesh in Kannada. It contains a collection of anecdotes related to the lives of Sanskrit poets spread over 1,500 years. The book serves as an introduction to classical Sanskrit literature and the scholarship of the ancients. The authors hope that the book will inspire readers to take up Sanskrit studies.

Paper titled “Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam’s Contributions to Indian values and National Integration in the

Context of the Dravidian Movement, with special reference to the Nā ṭ yaś ā stra” received a special recognition in the form of a cash award of Rs. 20,000 at the Swadeshi Indology Conference held on 23rd December 2017 at IIT Madras, Chennai. The paper counters the western indologists who propose the Aryan-Dravidian theory.

The paper provides evidence from the Nā ṭ yaś ā stra and the scholarly work of Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam to show that Tamil Nadu has been an integral part of India from times immemorial.
