Help the Homeless

H omeless men living under Flushing Meadow

Bridges need clothing For a number of years now and thanks to the generosity of our parishioners; every Sunday morning during the winter months, we bring hot choco-late, a sandwich and some warm clothes to a group of homeless men living under the bridges and surrounding areas of Flushing Meadows Corona Park. These are men who for different reasons have given up on life and seen unable to cope with it. As the cold weather approaches, once again we are preparing to start our mission and we need clothing. If you have warm clothes and blan-kets that are clean and in good condition and would like to donate them please call us and we will pick them up. For more information call Jorge at (718) 224-8187 or (718) 423-5988. Annual Coat Drive

T he coats are dropped off to needy parishes in Queens

and Brooklyn, visiting Nurse Early Head Start program in Rockaway, St. John’s Bread and Life Ministry, and other spots that are in need of help. The coats can be left at my office at Bryce Rea Associates, or if you can’t come to me I will go and pick them up; just call my cell phone: Carolyn Meenan at (917) 796-2990. CHRISTMAS POEM This poem was written by a Marine stationed in Okinawa Japan and submitted by Brother Jim Kelly a Korean Veteran: TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, HE LIVED ALL ALONE, IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE. I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE, AND TO SEE JUST WHO IN THIS HOME DID LIVE. I LOOKED ALL ABOUT, A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE, NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS, NOT EVEN A TREE. NO STOCKING BY MANTLE, JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND, ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES OF FAR DISTANT LANDS. WITH MEDALS AND BADGES, AWARDS OF ALL KINDS, A SOBER THOUGHT CAME THROUGH MY MIND. FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT, IT WAS DARK AND DREARY, I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER, ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY. THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING, SILENT, ALONE, CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME. THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE, THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER, NOT HOW I PICTURED A UNITED STATES SOLDIER. WAS THIS THE HERO OF WHOM I'D JUST READ? CURLED UP ON A PONCHO, THE FLOOR FOR A BED? I REALIZED THE FAMILIES THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT, OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT. SOON ROUND THE WORLD, THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY, AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY. THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR, BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS, LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE. I COULDN'T HELP WONDER HOW MANY LAY ALONE, ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME. THE VERY THOUGHT BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE, I DROPPED TO MY KNEES AND STARTED TO CRY. THE SOLDIER AWAKENED AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE, "SANTA DON'T CRY, THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE. I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM, DON'T ASK FOR MORE, MY LIFE IS MY GOD, MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS." THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP, I COULDN'T CONTROL IT, I CONTINUED TO WEEP. I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS, SO SILENT AND STILL, AND WE BOTH SHIVERED FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL. I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT, THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR SO WILLING TO FIGHT. THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER, WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE, WHISPERED, "CARRY ON SANTA, IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE." ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH, AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT, "MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND, AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT."

Helpful travel tips to those who are traveling abroad (1) The most effective means of protecting yourself and your property is the liberal use of common sense reinforced with a high state of security awareness. Do not give anyone the opportunity to exploit vulnerabilities. Stay alert and exercise good judgment. Do research on the country you will be travel-ing to before you go. Talk with friends, family or business associates who have visited the country. They can usually give you some good tips for your trip. Also, for any travel warnings or other conditions that you should be aware of, check with the U.S. State Department, Bureau of Consular Affairs.

Travelers should discuss with their travel agents, which airlines, hotels and car rental companies are recommended. Obtain information from U.S. Customs regard-ing any special requirements for the country you are visiting.

Request from the embassy of the country you plan to visit a copy of any list or pamphlet de-scribing customs restrictions or banned materi-als. This is a hint designed to minimize the pos-sibility of an encounter with the local authori-ties. Choose an airline with a good safety and on-time record. Try to book a non-stop flight, as these have fewer takeoffs and landings. Try to make your stopovers in airports that have a high security standard and good security screen-ing. Choose a window or center seat. This will keep you away from any action that may be happening in the aisle.

Many U.S. corporations have hotels abroad that are owned by local businessmen and staffed by local workers but managed by first class U.S. hoteliers. You usually can expect levels of safety and security that are consistent with U.S. standards. Check with the Regional Security Officer at the U.S. Embassy for a list of hotels utilized by officials visiting the area. Kevin Devlin Kevin Devlin is St. Anastasia parishioner; he is re-tired Captain from the Port Authority Police De-partment and was commanding officer of the Port Authority’s Emergency Services and Canine unit.
