Gen. AK Singh, Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Andaman & Nicobar Islands; Shri Bishnu Pada Ray, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Also present on occasion were Shri B Ashok, Chairman Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., Shri Verghese Cherian, Director (Human Resource) Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., Shri Rajesh CEO IndianOil Foundation and other senior officials from A&N administration. Veer Savarkar Jyot has been erected by The IndianOil Foundation at the Cellular Jail in Port Blair as a lasting tribute to Shri Savarkar’s immense contribution to India’s freedom struggle. This Jyot will be a permanently lit flame inside the premises of Cellular Jail with the help of LPG supplied by Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. free of cost for this project. Speaking at the occasion, Shri Amit Shah, said that the great sacrifice of Veer Savarkar, and the exemplary courage and tolerance which he exhibited during his period of imprisonment at the Cellular Jail, is still a major inspiration for us today. He stated that this was the biggest day of his life as the Jyot would serve as a “Prerna Sthan” for the coming generations. Shri Dharmendra, MOS (Independent Charge), MoPNG, while addressing the guests, appreciated the efforts for erection of the Veer Savarkar Jyot, which symbolically highlights the sacrifice of numerous freedom fighters who have selflessly worked and sacrificed their lives for India’s freedom struggle. Unveiling of Veer Savarkar Jyot at Cellular Jail, Port Blair

Also present on occasion were Shri B Ashok, Chairman Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., Shri Verghese Cherian, Director (Human Resource) Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., Shri Rajesh CEO IndianOil Foundation and other senior officials from A&N administration.

The Honorable Lieutenant Governor, Shri A K Singh emphasized that the Savarkar Jyot will help today’s citizen of India to realize the valour with which our freedom fighters endured the pain and atrocities of the oppressors and still managed to keep their motivation high by emphatically supporting each other.

Shri Bishnu Pada Ray, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, spoke about history of cellular jail, and it being a landmark monument and an epitome of sacrifices by brave hearts like Veer Savarkar.

Director (Human Resource) IndianOil and Trustee Indian Oil Foundation, Shri Verghese Cherian, rendered the formal vote of thanks.

Shri Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was one of the many freedom-fighters incarcerated in the Cellular Jail at port Blair during the freedom struggle. He was sentenced to 50 years’ of jail, for his active role in India’s freedom stuggle and spent about 16 years here in the Cellular Jail. He is revered in India even today as ‘Veer Savarkar’, a legendary personality of extra-ordinary valour.

The IndianOil Foundation is a non-profit trust created by Indian Oil Corporation to protect, preserve and promote India’s heritage monuments. The foundation is working in collaboration with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the National Culture Fund of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

Earlier, the National President BJP, Shri Amit Shah, Union Minister of State (I/C) Petroleum & Natural gas, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Lt. Governor, A&N Islands, Member of Parliament, Shri Bishnu Pada Ray placed wreath at the Martyrs’ Column, Cellular Jail.

LG releases books ‘Birds of A& N Islands’ and ‘Reef Fishes of A&N Islands’ Calls upon ZSI to make people

beneficiaries of their works

Port Blair, May 28: Hon’ble Lt Governor, Lt Gen A K Singh (Retd), today released books titled ‘Birds of Andaman & Nicobar Islands’ and Reef Fishes of Andaman & Nicobar Islands’, published by Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), at a simple function at Raj Niwas. The Coffee Table Books on interesting birds and fish of the Islands have been published by ZSI as part of their Centenary year celebration. Both the books contain vast information of birds and fish of the Islands with pictorial representations in simple language with an aim to reach the common people.

In his brief address on the occasion, the Lt Governor complimented Zoological Survey of India for releasing the two books and for the important works being undertaken by them in the Islands. Stating that ZSI has a role to record, protect, adopt and conserve our flora & fauna, he suggested that besides its role of protection and conservation, ZSI should also work for creating awareness among the people. In this context, he observed that ZSI should publish and distribute pamphlets and show movies/audio video presentations in schools and colleges to generate awareness among the students. This will help them achieve their twin objectives of generating awareness and secondly achieve their prime objective of protecting the flora & fauna, he said.

Referring to Port Blair being selected as Smart City, he complimented the Chairperson of PBMC and her team, citizens of the Islands and thanked Hon’ble Prime Minister of India and Urban Development Minister for having reposed faith in the UT. He further said that this day is a historical and significant day in the history of the Islands, as today is the 133rd birth anniversary of Veer Sarvarkar. The Veer Savarkar Jyot will be unveiled today in National Memorial Cellular Jail by Shri Amit Shahji, President of BJP. This is a very good example of amalgamation of development, preservation of history, art & culture and environment protection, the LG observed.

In his address, Dr. Kalish Chander, Director, ZSI, GoI gave a detailed account of activities and functioning of ZSI. He said ZSI is one of the premier research institutions in India established by the erstwhile British Empire in 1916 at Kolkata and is celebrating 100 years of relentless services to the nation. He further said that ZSI will continue to do its best in the Centenary year to disseminate the knowledge acquired to bring a sense of awareness of the Islands wealth, which need to be conserved for the future generation.

Sr. Scientist, ZSI, Dr. K C Gopi gave a detail account of the two books published by the ZSI and released today.

Earlier, welcoming the chief guest and others, Dr. C Ragunathen, Deputy Director, ZSI informed that ZSI regional centre at Port Blair was established on 21st April 1977. During the last 40 years of research works, ZSI has recorded 9344 species, which contributes about 9.5% of Indian faunal diversity. The function concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by Scientist, ZSI, Dr. Sivaperamul.

Another feather in ANIIMS cap ANIIMS get MCI renewal of permission for admission of 2nd batch of 100 students for the academic year 2016 – 2017 ANIPMT-2016 to be

conducted for selection of students

In a short span of an year, ANIIMS has crossed yet another milestone, when MCI accorded renewal of permission for admission of 2nd batch of 100 students for the academic year 2016 – 2017. This was communicated to the Director, ANIIMS through a letter from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India dated 25 May 2016. This is a big achievement and has been possible as a result of whole hearted encouragement by the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of A & N Islands, Lt. General Ajay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, SM & VSM (Retd.), full cooperation of the A & N Administration, blessings of the residents of A & N Islands and hard work of the Consultant, Director and all the staff of ANIIMS and GB Pant Hospital, Port Blair.

It may be recalled that a team of MCI inspectors comprising of Dr. Parthapratim Pradhan, Dr. Hansa Goswami, and Dr. Sankardar Chattopadhyay had inspected the College on 21st April 2016 and submitted their report to MCI. During their visit, they had verbally complemented the facilities available at the college and even rated them better that most of the established colleges of the country. A meeting was conducted at MCI, HQ, New Delhi, which then submitted a positive recommendation to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Decks have also been cleared on 24th May 2016 for exempting State Govt. Medical Colleges from the Supreme Court mandated single All India entrance exam (NEET) for an year with President Pranab Mukherjee giving his assent to the NEET ordinance.

ANIIMS in consultation with A&N Administration has therefore decided to go ahead with ANIPMT-2016 as the entrance exam for selection of candidates to 1st year MBBS-2016-17 at ANIIMS, as was done for its very first batch.

The entrance exam, ANIPMT-2016 will be conducted as per the schedule given in the prospectus. However, certain changes have been made in the date line to permit students to fill up the forms & submit the same so as to be able to write ANIPMT-2016, in case they have not yet filled the forms due to the prevailing confusion.

The fresh time line is as follows:

In addition, aspiring students are suggested to also appear in NEET-II so as to be eligible for central quota seats offered by A&N Administration. Candidates, who have already appeared in NEET-I (AIPMT) on 1st May, 2016, can appear in NEET-II, provided they forfeit their claim for NEET-I.

Health insurance scheme for needy Islanders

This is for information to the General Public that the Hon’ble Lt. Governor, A&N Islands had launched the Health Scheme namely Andaman & Nicobar Islands Scheme for Health Insurance (ANISHI) on 26.01.2015 to provide cashless benefit for the needy Islanders.

The Health Insurance Scheme will provide coverage to those people belonging to BPL category of A&N Islands, Pensioner settled in A&N Islands after retirement and their dependent family members & Permanent residents with family income of less than Rs. 3.00 Lakhs per annum.

As per the Referral system as specified under the scheme, the patient is to be referred by concerned Specialist, thereafter they report with referral slip issued by Medical Superintendent, GB, Pant Hospital, Port Blair to the Nodal Cell (ANISHI), Directorate of Health Services alongwith Islanders ID/Voter card, Annual Income certificate, Ration Card and Pensioners shall submit payment order as the case may be.

So far, seven hospitals have been empanelled in the city of Chennai, Kolkata & Hyderabad under the ANISHI Scheme, namely, Medica Super Specialty Hospital, Kolkata-(Multi Specialty Hospital), Peerless Hospitex Hospital and Research Centre Ltd., Kolkata-4-(Multi Specialty Hospital), AMRI Hospital, Kolkata –(Multi specialty Hospital, newly included) (JIPMER, Pondicherry-(Multi specialty

Arrangements are being made for tie up of hospitals like, Adyar WIA, Chennai (Single Specialty –Cancer Institute) & Sri Ramakrishana, (Chennai Multi specialty Hospital) under ANISHI Scheme. Efforts are also being made for empanelment of other multi/single specialty hospitals located in and around the City of Chennai.

It is to inform to all concerned that due to inclement weather conditions prevailing over Andaman group of Islands, the foundation laying ceremony scheduled to be held on 29.05.2016 at 1100 Hrs. at Attam Pahar has now been rescheduled to 30.05.2016 (Monday). However, the venue and time will remain unchanged.
