What are the relevant issues with regard to housing for the “architectural profession”, today?

In which ways can “technology” be a driving force for the transformation of housing, today?

“If architects want to be relevant in the future they have to concentrate on the roots of their profession. There is an enormous study still to be done about flexible construction systems, new climate concepts and relevant building methods. Architects have to become again engineers who offer a tool instead of fixed formal exercises. The question for the future is to create flexible, neutral structures that can resist and allow continuous changes.”

An architect is in the position to change situations, he can also modify the way people think about several types of housing

What will be important in the future, is the way we build urban houses. There will be demographic changes who blow up the structure of society, so the architect must think about the housing for all different kinds of people who will be living in an urban environment.

The architect must create a new concept on the idea of “density”

The architect is in the position to change this way of thinking about mass housing

People choose URBAN SPACE!

People no longer have strong relationships with the place and neighbourhoud they live in

Houses must be flexible in order to become interesting for different kinds of people with different lifestyles

FLEXIBILITY!

Adaptivity to new economic situations

Flexibility in design, an apartment must be a big neutral space which can be transformed over the years to the needs of the inhabitants TECHNOLOGY

The architect can design the floor plan according to the building and the facade, but the interior space is a minimalistic and standardised space so inhabitants can fill it in as they want

Ikea becomes popular

Modulate!

Mass housing leads to modular architecture. Rooms with the same measurements can easily be transformed in rooms with another function

Daekwon Park created symbiotic interlock “to reunite the isolated city blocks and insert a multi-layer network of public space, green space and nodes for the city”. It comprises a system of stackable modules that are designed to add an extra layer of infrastructure to existing buildings via sky docks and bridges, vertical gardens, cultural spaces, and energy producing wind turbines. It addresses some of the shortcomings of green roofs by internalizing green environments within its biomorphic structure while contributing functionality, energy, and food. It may not have beaten the competition, but its symbiotic integration with existing buildings struck us as a brilliant brand of future-forward thinking within the present era.Inhabitat.com
