Impact of Loss of GCEI Funding in FY 2016MCPS received approximately $17.7 million (50 percent) less in
funding for Geographic Cost of Education Index (GCEI) in FY 2016 compared to the previous year.
The Board of Education had to make $53.1 million in reductions in June 2016 based on the FY 2016 appropriation approved by the County Council.
The loss of GCEI funding represented one-third of the reductions that had to be taken.
Major components of the FY 2016 reductions included:• 372.8 school-based positions and $23.2 million withheld from allocations• 43 central office positions and $4.4 million• $10.5 million for contributions to the retirement fund• $2 million from the FY 2016 training plan• $2 million from the purchase of textbooks• 12.5 positions and $1.2 million in strategic priority enhancements• $3.6 million saved by delaying salary and step increases by 2 weeks.
