Based on the loved characters from the
popular book and television series,Arthur’s TM World (February 1 – May 11)
reinforced the messages that being smartand “into” books is cool, and that kids face, and can resolve, real-life dilemmas. Created
by the Children’s Museum of Boston,Arthur’s TM World was sponsored locally bythe Northwestern Mutual Foundation and
Barnes & Noble Booksellers, withmedia support provided by the
Milwaukee JournalSentinel.
Kids made a linefor VROOM! – an interactive
crawling structure made of realmotorcycle parts that debuted just in
time for Harley-Davidson’s 100thAnniversary celebration in Milwaukee.Created by the Museum in cooperationwith Harley-Davidson Motor Company,
the exhibit gave little motorcycleenthusiasts an engine to rev, hub
caps to spin and pistons to crank.
A new post office activity was a big hit with visitors
to A Trading Place, our exhibit aboutthe people, places and processes thatmake a community successful. More
exciting changes to this area are in the works, thanks to the generosity of Concours Motors
and Saab, and Colleen and Colin Hutt. And,fore you know it, we’ll have new
things to explore in My Body Works, thanks to our continuing partnership
with Children’s Hospital andHealth System.
Thanks to our talented andhard-working Friends Committee,
Museum events created quite a buzz in2003. More than 400 guests attended our annual
Little Sweetheart Dinner Dance in February – recog-nized as one of the best family events in the city – andthousands of trick-or-treaters enjoyed our ever popular
Not-So-Scary Halloween and Little Monster Bash. As always, our July 3rd Family Fireworks party was a sellout, and an
amazing Gala Committee presented the Museum’s signaturefundraiser – Through the Looking Glass – setting records for
attendance and net proceeds to support Museum opera-tions. Our newest event – Kids Countdown on NewYear’s Eve –– included fun activities, kid-friendly hors
d’oeuvres and a “sham-pagne” toast for hun-dreds of little revelers and their families.
Family Focus – ourparenting program for disad-
vantaged families – enrolled a record408 families referred through social serv-ice and community agencies, including
Head Start, the Penfield Children’s Center, andthe Indian Community School. New collabora-tions extended the program to disabled parentsand foster families, while partnerships with LadyPitts High School and the Reach Youth Center
enabled us to reach teen parents. FamilyFocus received national recognition from
the federal Institute for Museum andLibrary Services in 2003, which
left us ming withpride!

children and adults

Museum in 2003, including
30,000 participants in free

programs – it was a
“honey” of a year!
Hundreds of visitorsenjoyed our annual

Growth charts are a wonderful way for you and your child to track exciting stages of development. Havefun decorating this growth chart together using a variety of craft materials -- markers, fabric, and more. When done, cut out and hang the chart so that the bottom is two feet above the floor.
Creating a unique art project helps children develop self-confidence and fine motor skills, make choices, and develop preferences for color, texture, and patterns. Art also encourages children to assert their inde-pendence through creativity and experimentation. Adults can promote these skills by providing opportunitiesto explore the creative arts, offering help as needed, and allowing children to get messy and explore.
