1 A Great Year for Triathlon in Scotland

><

Welcome to the 2013 Annual Report and Annual General Meeting (AGM). Once again this is the time of year that we, your Board of Directors and employed staff, and you the members come together to review our year’s work. Today is the day that we are held to account to ensure that we have been working effectively and with due diligence as a Governing Body to develop the sport of triathlon. As our sport continues to grow and develop the AGM is your chance to ensure that we are managing this growth well and encouraging further development of the sport for all.

As you will see from the Annual Report we as a Sports Governing Body have continued to evolve. Wise investments in our organisation including key staff appointments and development projects have resulted in a healthy growth in membership, events, participants and income leaving us in rude health as we enter a new year. We will continue to build on this success in the coming years.

The AGM though is not just a time to carry out the ‘business’ of the day; it is also that time when we as a triathlon family come together to reflect and celebrate the achievements of the past year.

London once again provided a showcase for our great sport as the home to this year’s ITU World Finals. Not only was the racing of the GB team superb, but so too was the fantastic input from our own Scottish athletes at this world class event. At a senior level, throughout the year, our athletes have continued to flourish and have confirmed themselves as regulars on the GB team. And, with a fistful of medals at Junior level, Scotland is set to become a growing influence at the highest levels of racing.

The coming year will see all eyes and ambitions focussing on Glasgow 2014. As an added bonus the Glasgow Games will be the first time the Triathlon Relay will be staged at a Commonwealth Games. With the prospect of racing on home soil in front of thousands of partisan spectators, the scene is set for a thrilling event for our Scottish athletes.

Whilst it was fantastic to see our sport as one of the most over subscribed sports for the 2014 Games this has meant that many members of the triathlonscotland family will have been disappointed in not obtaining tickets. The good news is that this will be a free to spectate event for most of the course so everyone will be able to see our heroes in action if they so wish.

Away from elite racing as always for us, the strength of our organisation lies with you the ‘ordinary’ member. The measure of success for the Board and staff is whether your experiences either as a competitor or a volunteer, have been positive ones and where this isn’t the case, how can we do better? Be you an Age Grouper racing at the Worlds or a volunteer helping a novice to complete their first successful swim in open water; ultimately if we can look about us at the end of the day and say we are proud to be a member of such a great sport then we know we are on the right path to further success.

As 2013 comes to a close we feel sure that the vast majority of our members will be able to reflect on the year and be proud to be a member of the triathlonscotland family. We certainly are, as are our fellow Board members and our hard working staff.

Thank you for continuing to support triathlon in Scotland and let’s look forward together to another exciting year for one of the fastest growing sports worldwide!

Good luck for all your triathlon challenges in 2014 and don’t forget to tell us all about them! We want to hear all your great and inspiring stories.

Looking forward to 2014...2014 is sure to be an exciting year for the sport in so many ways. - Here are just a few things to keep a look out for...

• Recruitment of another Regional Development Officer to help develop further our club network, schools involvement and better engagement with local authorities around Scotland.

• Our second coaching conference with a launch of our coaching strategy up until 2016.

• More youth and junior events to ensure we are providing wider opportunities to encourage and develop our young triathletes.

• Come along athons to assist clubs to recruit new members and volunteers in preparation for the anticipated Glasgow bounce.

sportscotland increased its investment in triathlon as part of the overall Glasgow 2014, four-year investment figures for the 17 Commonwealth Games sports. Since 2007 triathlon has received a 43% increase in funding and in 2013 saw an increase of 21%.

The increase in funds has supported key areas of our business, such as coaching and development, to allow us to recruit appropriate delivery staff to ensure we continue to drive the sport forward in Scotland.

In addition this increase in funding will go towards helping those triathletes successfully selected for Team Scotland to be the best prepared for the Games.

Over the last 12 months we have successfully recruited four new members of staff including a: Performance Administrator, Communications Officer, Coaching Development Officer and an Apprentice Coach. We also plan to recruit two Regional Development Officers, one before the end of 2013 and a second in 2014. This will ensure there is better engagement with clubs, schools, local authorities and other partners at local and regional level which will in turn help us deliver our targets of: increasing participation and membership, improving performance at all levels, and raising awareness and profile of the sport generally.

Our website is a widely used portal for information on triathlonscotland such as; triathlon and other disciplines, event directory and information, and up-to-date news.

In January 2013 we re-launched our website incorporating a new and improved events listing page with search function for all sanctioned Scottish races. Our events pages are particularly popular showing how active we are here in Scotland.

The new website has been a success, with our host and designer Flintriver telling us we receive the most regular hits of all their websites. The website is an ever evolving tool and we will once again look to review its content and accessibility in 2014.

As well as a widely accessed website we enjoy vibrant social media activity and have reached over 1,310 FB likes and over 1,090 Twitter followers. Next year we look forward to increasing our social media presence where we plan to further expand our activity on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.

In 2013 we have seen 89 coaches achieve their Level 1, 2 or 3 qualifications. In Shetland, Carluke, Wishaw, Oban, Dumfries and Kinross a total of 62 level 1 coaches were successful. We held level 2 courses in Stirling and Carluke, where 20 coaches were successful and finally six coaches achieved our top coaching qualification - level 3.

On 23 and 24 February 2013 the inaugural coaching conference took place at Commonwealth Games venue the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome; Emirates Arena, Glasgow. The conference was attended by 40 coaches who were a mix of UKCC qualified triathlon coaches and aspiring triathlon coaches. This event provided them with a chance to learn from industry experts, network with other coaches and celebrate our great sport.

Well received by those who attended, plans are underway for our second Coaching Conference, confirmed to take place on the weekend of 8th and 9th February 2014, where we are confident we will present another successful, event with a projected 30% increase in attendee numbers.

triathlonscotland experienced a 19.4% membership increase in 2013, exceeding our 12% year on year target projection( 1,397 to 1,668). This increase can be attributed to a mixture of: new membership offers, increasing post event communications with non-members, improved access to online membership information and a general awareness raising of what a triathlon membership is all about.

As well as triathlonscotland experiencing an increase in membership, we have seen a healthy increase in numbers and people joining clubs. This is a really positive development but still represents only 40% of our overall triathlonscotland membership; therefore further work is planned for 2014 to increase this number.

Overall, in 2013 we have seen an increase in club members of over 45% - increasing from 1,887 to 2,757 with our youth and junior club membership increasing by 36%. Also seven new clubs affiliated this year.

Membership increases can be attributed to a number of factors such as an increasing awareness of triathlon as a sport; post Olympics, with increased TV coverage also contributing. It has been great to see our clubs expanding and to see them identifying the demand for youth and juniors.

The new clubs are a mixture of new triathlon clubs that have formed and existing, single sport clubs who have developed a triathlon arm. Geographically, these new clubs are helping us take triathlon into areas of Scotland where no previous provision existed. We would like to welcome: Campbeltown Running Club, Dhekelia Cycling & Triathlon Club, Freestyle Swim Club, G72 Tri, Greenock Glenpark Harriers, North Argyll Cycle Club & Water Rats to triathlonscotland.

During May and June, more than 1,800 children in Edinburgh, Grangemouth and Carluke had the opportunity to try triathlon at two school’s participation events; Tri-umph (Edinburgh) and Tata Kids of Steel (Grangemouth and Carluke). The mini-triathlon taster events were for children aged 8-13 who swam, cycled and ran their way around the short triathlon course, cheered along by their friends before going on to do some fun additional activities.

The events were designed to give children a taste of triathlon whilst also helping to promote and encourage children to adopt a healthier lifestyle through sport and exercise as well as promoting partnership working with local communities.

It is anticipated that the recruitment of our new Regional development posts will assist in developing stronger pathways for those that wish to take part in triathlon more regularly and will make those vital links between school and club activity.

Marc Austin won the silver and Grant Sheldon the Bronze at the Junior World Championships in London in September. Marc and Grant were part of a thrilling race, that took place on the London 2012 Olympic course, racing Frances’ Dorian Coninx to the line for the medal spots. This achievement by athletes; Marc and Grant and Coach Blair Cartmell is significant for the wider triathlon community as it demonstrates that we have a pathway that supports Scots to be World Class.

of celebrate funding

<triathlonscotland were awarded £2,900 of celebrate funding to help clubs to encourage more people to take part in triathlon activities as well as to attract new volunteers. The funding will help bring to life an initiative, called Come Along Athon, producing a tool kit that has been designed to help clubs host activities, which will help them expand their club. This project aims to assist clubs to recruit new club members and identify existing club members to take on new roles such as committee positions, event organisation or coaching.

triathlonscotland were delighted to receive an additional £2,000 from sportscotland in order to help develop technical officials. In 2013, three local technical officials achieved regional technical official status. Other highlights include, Masie Bancewicz elected to the European Triathlon Union Technical Committee, and 118 people, with triathlon specific experience, have registered as triathlon volunteers at Glasgow 2014. The selection process for volunteers is ongoing and announcements will take place next year.

Of our existing race organisers, 12 have completed the British Triathlon Event Organiser’s Course. Professional development opportunities have continued and include our third event organiser’s course, as well as an interactive event organiser course developed for schools and colleges to help encourage youngsters to host events.

<new races

In 2013; 124 events were successfully held, including 20 new races and eight Scottish Championship events. Of the 20 new races, two of the key events held were: the relay event hosted by Perth Triathlon Club and the first Tri Together event to take place in Scotland.

Relay Wild Triathlon

triathlonscotland supported Perth Triathlon Club to host the first ever 4 x 4 mixed team relay event in Scotland – named the Relay Wild Triathlon. In this fast and furious racing format, each of the 29 teams comprised four triathletes. In turn, each triathlete swam 200m, cycled 5.8km and ran 1.2km before passing the baton (timing chip) to the next team member. The race lived up to his name and it looks like this type of race format will become more popular in 2014, with a further two potential team relay events proposed.

Tri Together, Glasgow

Tri Together is an award-winning, accessible, short distance triathlon for people of all ages and abilities to swim, bike and run together. triathlonscotland partnered charity Leonard Cheshire Disability to bring this event to Glasgow for the first time. Over 160 competitors took part, including 75 children and 12 people with a disability where the majority were taking part in their first ever triathlon, in what was a true celebration of sport. We must also highlight the work of the volunteers - led by our experienced members from Fusion Triathlon Club, GRC and Lanark Triathlon Club – a good example of true partnership working. This event was also a starting point in Scotland to assist with the development of triathlon for people with a disability. It is anticipated that this type of event will be replicated in other parts of Scotland and Tri Together will become an annual event on the Scottish Calendar.

Athlete Ambassador Initiative

<In 2013 we were fortunate to secure three new sponsors; Legends Promotional Products, Sigvaris and two athletes accepted as part of Atos’ athlete ambassador initiative.

Legends Promotional Products has continued their support for our ever popular Scottish Ranking Series. Now known as the Legends Ranking Series, competitors from the age of eight have the chance to earn individual and club points across our eight ranking series events. Winners across the series are recognised at our annual awards ceremony.

We were also delighted to work with Sigvaris this year who will provide all of our elite athletes with compression garments, as well as providing discounted items for all of our members. Finally, Atos, one of the Glasgow 2014 major sponsors who will be providing a range of IT portals and systems, further demonstrated their support for Glasgow 2014, by the appointment of Marc Austin and David McNamee as Atos Ambassadors for The Games.
