Director / Curator’s MessageThe year 2013 was a notable year for the Burnaby Art Gallery. After more than nine years of leading the gallery, Darrin Martens resigned in April leaving behind a legacy of remarkable exhibitions and extensive publications. In September, I assumed the position of Director / Curator of the gallery. The interim period between the resignation and appointment was a very active time for the gallery as the staff prepared to host the very well received Dutch landscape and portrait shows. It is a testament to the abilities and dedication of the staff and the gallery advisory committee that during this time of change, the gallery successfully delivered what may be considered the largest undertaking in the history of the organization.

There were many other highlights in 2013: • Launch of an online database featuring the Permanent Collection and Art Rentals Collection at collections.burnabyartgallery.ca • Historic record attendance for exhibitions, school and public programs.• Community engagements with special projects such as Kiosk at the Bob Prittie Library, Metrotown and a special series of exhibitions that explored artist books at the Tommy Douglas Library.

• Installation of the beautiful public artwork RainCatcher created by Noel Harding at the new Edmonds Community Centre. • Addition of more than 80 significant works on paper through the generosity of donors.

The Burnaby Art Gallery continues to provide opportunities for public engagement with the arts through gallery and offsite exhibitions, educational art programs and public art projects. I look forward to the opportunity to build upon the solid foundation that has been established through the efforts of previous and current staff, artists and collectors in the community and through the financial support of private and governmental funding.

I would like to thank funding agencies, the City of Burnaby, the British Columbia Arts Council, Canada Council for the Arts, and Heritage Canada (Museum Assistance Program) for the ongoing support of our programs and projects.

I would also like to thank our advisory committee, staff and volunteers for their ongoing commitment to the Burnaby Art Gallery.

Ellen van EijnsbergenDirector / Curator

It has been an honour to serve as the Burnaby Art Gallery Chair for the past six years, watching the growth and development of our local treasure. During this time the profile and reputation of the gallery has increased dramatically through the curatorial excellence of the staff. The leading edge programming has engaged a variety of audiences, attracting visitors from across the Lower Mainland.

Our highlight of the year were the fall exhibitions Storms and Bright Skies: Three Centuries of Dutch Landscape organized by the National Gallery of Canada and Inner Realms: Dutch Portraits on loan from the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. The staff did an outstanding job engaging sponsors ranging from local businesses to the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Vancouver. Our media coverage and volume of visitors during this high profile exhibition broke all previous records.

Chairperson’s RemarksDemand for high quality programming at the gallery continues to grow, making full use of the Ceperley House—one of the city’s most renowned heritage buildings. School programming, public programs and other special events are well-attended by the local community.

With a new curator at the helm and an expanded advisory committee, the gallery continues to grow as an anchor of cultural engagement for the citizens of Burnaby.

MandateThe Burnaby Art Gallery operates as an art museum, gallery and community forum to explore and advance knowledge, appreciation and understanding of contemporary and historical visual art through exhibition, programming and collection services in traditional and non-traditional contexts and places in and outside the City of Burnaby.

Institutional Core Values • Art has the ability to make the abstract tangible.• Ideas are the foundations for actions.• Education creates knowledge.• Learning is a lifelong endeavour.• Experiences shape our view of the world and how we interact with one another.• Collections represent our heritage.

Role of the Institution• Provide experiences for art museum visitors and program participants (public and school) that challenge creativity, ideas, norms, values, identity, and beliefs in order to create greater understanding of the ideas behind contemporary and historical art, and the artists that create work so that greater visual arts literacy within the communities that the BAG serves is developed.

• Act as a leader in the collection, preservation and exhibition of those artists who choose to work on paper—we are the only art museum in British Columbia dedicated to works of art on paper. Through our collection and exhibition practices the BAG endeavours to represent the best and most promising artists within the Canadian print culture community.

• Act as a community forum and gathering place for the dissemination of ideas. This is accomplished through free public talks, symposia, and community outreach projects (libraries and non-traditional art museum spaces such as shopping malls, public squares, and community centres) related to exhibitions and public art events that occur within and outside of the art gallery.

The exhibition program at the Burnaby Art Gallery continues as a core function of the institution. Providing a diverse, challenging and engaging program for audiences that visit the gallery represents both a challenge and opportunity for the institution. Developing a balanced program that reflects regional, national and international artists provides the local and Metro Vancouver region with access to a diversity of practices and approaches to art. We started the year with The Artist Poster Show, which included a 12-piece poster series by Sonny Assu, There Is Hope If We Rise. Highlights of the 2013 season included the major exhibition Storms and Bright Skies: Three Centuries of Dutch Landscapes, organized by the National Gallery of Canada and Inner Realms: Dutch Portraits featuring works on loan from the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.

The caliber of these exhibitions attracted the gallery’s highest public attendance to date and garnered attention from national and international media and audiences. Other exhibition highlights included local print artist Shinsuke Minegishi and renowned Canadian artists Emily Carr and Irene Hoffar Reid. The final exhibition of the year, Volumes: Works in Paper curated by Jennifer Cane, Assistant Curator at the Burnaby Art Gallery, showcased works from the collection by veteran artists such as Myra Eadie and Bob Steele alongside new works by emerging artists Maggie Boyd, Graham Landin, Nicole Ondre and Jennifer Rose Sciarrino.

Fabulous to see these Dutch artists in this visiting exhibit to the West Coast. Good for you for making this happen. – A. Dosoba

Fantastic exhibition! Thanks for bringing it to the great city of Burnaby! – Nancy Ewes, on Dutch Landscapes and Portrait Exhibits.

I love posters. The true socialistic collection to books and works for everyone— privilege to be included. Thank you very much. – Ron Eckert

Spent two hours—so interesting and enjoyed reading about Emily Carr and Irene Hoffar Reid. What interesting lives they led, and the paintings are beautiful and so different. We, as Canadians, should appreciate these artists. – Lola Schwartz

The exhibitions presented at offsite locations such as Burnaby’s public libraries and community centres are an integral component of the exhibition program for the Burnaby Art Gallery. Engaging members of our community through art continues to be a developing area within the institution. Works selected from the permanent collection based on thematics, individuals, or particular media provide the foundation for exhibitions, while selections from artists’ submissions to the gallery complement the program. Through our offsite programs we aspire to:

• Interact with various local and community groups through visual art created by local, national and international artists in traditional and non-traditional exhibition spaces.

• Create opportunities for visitors, program participants and patrons to engage in an experience with visual art that expands and develops knowledge, skills and understanding.

• Provide a diversified and culturally responsive art education program throughout the local community to develop tolerance, understanding and encourage community interest and engagement in the art gallery and the services it provides.

Bob MacIntyre, the gallery’s Exhibitions Coordinator / Preparator and Jennifer Cane, the gallery’s Assistant Curator are responsible for managing and developing this program.

2013 also saw the commissioning of Toronto-based artist and urban designer Noel Harding for the public space artwork RainCatcher at the newly built Edmonds Community Centre. RainCatcher celebrates nature and its place in our communities. Native plants surround the sculpture, while an abstract canopy of metal foliage collects and trickles rain water from above, bringing the sculpture to life.

Online and Touring ExhibitionsIn 2013, the Burnaby Art Gallery reached a wider network of audiences through online and touring exhibitions—TakaoTanabe: Chronicles of Form and Place (formandplace.ca) and Micah Lexier: Working as a Drawing. These avenues further exemplify the gallery’s commitment and ability to engage and educate audiences worldwide—making art tangible. The gallery is also proud to support local, national and international institutions by providing works from the collection on loan. An amazing collection of art.—Debbie and Amanda Tautscher

The publications created by the Burnaby Art Gallery continue to uphold professional standards, specifically in the area of research, artistic expression and relevance to historic and contemporary art practice in Canada. In 2013 the gallery produced a limited edition set of 12 posters by Sonny Assu, titled There Is Hope If We Rise #1-12, as well as two exhibition catalogues—Shifting Margins: Emily Carr and Irene Hoffar Reid and Shinsuke Minegishi: fragility. The latter is a bilingual publication, printed in both English and Japanese.

Other gallery events included an artist talk by Shinsuke Minegishi during his exhibition in June and a guest curator tour led by Sofia Stalner. The gallery continued to host its Lunch BAG program, offering participants a tour of the current exhibit with a tasty lunch to follow. Senior’s group tours such as Strawberry Tea & Tour and ESL Tours were also in demand this year, particularly during the fall exhibitions. Also introduced were Mandarin language gallery tours, which are scheduled for most of 2014 exhibition programming. Professional Development Workshops for Artists ran in the spring and fall, with the Marketing for Artists program requiring a second date to accommodate public demand. The gallery brought in a new set of preschool programs to help meet the demand for quality art education for younger children. The new mid-week Parent and Tot program and the Saturday Swish Goes the Paint program were greeted with much interest and repeat enrolments. Summer art camps for preschool, children and teens flourished in 2013, with good registration and plenty of course offerings for young participants and their parents to choose from.

During the summer, the gallery commissioned KIOSK, an offsiteinstallation at Civic Square, Bob Prittie Library, Metrotown. Four local and international artists shared and transformed the purpose-built structure, enlivening the square through performances, installations, exchanges and conversations. The much enjoyed free Sunday family program In the BAG produced steady attendance numbers and fostered positive relationships and artistic engagement with new and repeat community members. Throughout the coming year, the gallery will continue offering engaging programs for gallery patrons and the community. Through hands-on workshops that foster the development of technical skills, personal expression and critical thinking to exhibit-based roundtables, film nights and enlightening artist talks, the coming year at the Burnaby Art Gallery should prove exciting.

Burnaby Art Gallery public programs are designed to interpret works in our exhibitions—both from the City of Burnaby Permanent Art Collection and works on loan from other institutions and private collections. This year, the gallery presented a variety of talks, tours and workshops running in conjunction with the two exhibits Storms and Bright Skies: Three Centuries of Dutch Landscapes, organized by the National Gallery of Canada and Inner Realms: Dutch Portraits, with works on loan from the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Programs included a highly popular speakers series featuring lecturers, artists and historians, hands-on workshops for adults and children, group tea and tours, and a free film night showing Dutch films.

2013 brought opportunities for the BAG’s school programs to attract new audiences to the gallery and reach further out into the community. More than 7,500 students across Metro Vancouver benefited from the Burnaby Art Gallery Permanent Collection and the Art Education Collection through gallery tours, full day studio programs, outreach workshops, BAG in a Box art kits, and a variety of career programs for youth.

2013 saw the highest number of in-gallery programs in the last decade, with excellent participation numbers for gallery tours and full-day studios. Highlights included the Dutch Landscapes and Portraits Tour and Workshop, which examined the artworks and styles of Dutch masters and inspired vibrant student dialogue and art-making. In the Arts Alive Tour and Workshop, students explored the theme of “memories of place,” creating their own expressive and meaningful landscape images. The year-round preschool specific tour Art and Me, which focuses on multi-sensory activities and active discovery of basic art elements, continued to be successful. Our ongoing partnership with the Burnaby School District allowed us to provide multiple professional development workshops for teachers this year.

We continued to reach more students with our extremely popular and successful outreach programs, which bring original artwork into the classroom for intensive activities emphasizing creative thinking and technical skills. A new pilot outreach program, Language Kitchen, brought practicing artists into schools to engage students in dialogue about their experiences of culture, language, food and art. Partnering with University of British Columbia student teachers, we ran an Extended Contact Pilot Study to research opportunities for increased contact time with individual classes. In addition to garnering valuable teacher feedback, we were able to provide free outreach workshops to Burnaby schools.

Looking forward to 2014, the gallery aims to continue developing educational opportunities that increase accessibility for more class participation in our programs, including independent schools, homeschooling groups, and adult ESL classes. In addition, we further plan for the development of multiple-visit intensive programs that foster collaboration and resource sharing between classroom teachers and gallery staff to promote deeper learning of visual arts skills.

I thought the tour was great and [the instructor] did a really good job at introducing the humour, irony and politics in the work, as well as performance art. Really, the inquiry part was brilliant. I will definitely be back at the gallery if I can, it’s one of my favourite galleries in Vancouver and surroundings, great space, great programming and great experience with the staff every time. – Grade 11/12 participating teacher, Burnaby Central Secondary School, Terrance Houle Gallery Tour and Workshop

Volunteers are an essential component of Burnaby Art Gallery’s operations. In 2013, we had 66 volunteers generously contribute 2,260 hours of their expertise and skills to all areas of the gallery, including children’s classes, school tours, receptions and research. Many of our experienced volunteers continued this year, and we were lucky enough to have many new local youths give back to their community while gaining valuable work experience in the arts. The Burnaby Art Gallery Advisory Committee (BAGAC) continues to be an important component of the gallery’s ongoing commitment to community engagement. Under the leadership of BAGAC, the gallery has built a reputation within the community through challenging and engaging exhibitions, thoughtful acquisitions of historical and contemporary works of art on paper and an increased presence within the community through alternative exhibition sites. Ongoing goals include diversifying the gallery’s revenue streams to expand the gallery’s reach to diverse and expanding communities.
