the karunakarya trust helps slum dwellers of Chennai to integrate into
society. As a charitable trust, karunakarya enables children to secure
admission to state run schools, offers various after school programs and
seeks to equip young people in acquiring professional training. karunakarya
supports the poorest of the poor in slums and villages in and around Chennai
with medical aid and relief. it also offers awareness programs for the weaker
sections of the society to enable them to know about their rights and develop problem
solving skills. We strive to enrich and empower the poorest in society so they can take
responsibility for finding solutions to the problems in their own communities.

the Ark nursery and primary School is located in eraiyur, 55 km from
Chennai and provides quality primary education for 200 poor children from
the surrounding villages. the Ark school was the first ‘almost free’ english
medium school in the eraiyur locality that provided good education facilities.
it is a locality where the parents have very low income and education is not a
priority. the number of students per class is limited to 25 and innovative alternative
methods that encourage activity based learning is encouraged in the school. the
academic year 2014 -2015 saw a total of 128 students from kindergarten to Class v. chrISTmaS celebraTION

SpOrTS day To improve self confidence, increase participation
and handle emotions
Sports Day was conducted on 26th July,2014 and
it included events such as march past, Drill, human
pyramid, team and individual competitions. in the
beginning, children were scared to be part of ‘human
pyramid’. But with practice and perseverance their
fear vanished. Children also had a chance to deal
with victory and failure. those who did not win
prizes were encouraged to handle their emotions with
maturity. 200 children participated in all - both from
tuition centres and the school.
excurSIONS To learn to explore enthusiastically
and observe keenly
this year the students were taken to the Zoological
park in guindy, heritage church in St.thomas mount
and to a science exhibition. for many of them this
was a ‘first time’ experience. the view on top of
St.thomas mount was thrilling for the children. they
also enjoyed the 3D animal show and snake show at
the Zoo. the children later wrote summaries of their
experiences to all these places.

For collective learning of new skills and encouraging environment consciousness through nurture of garden
mr and mrs. meyer, parents of our founder mrs. Cynthia Chellappa visited our school in January and they started off two
interesting projects for the students and the tailoring staff. one was gardening and the other knitting. Students from
classes iv and v had prepared the soil by loosening it in the morning. mr. meyer who was visiting from Switzerland arrived
with the following seeds - radish, Carrot, Sunflower and Basil. these were sowed with much enthusiasm and children
continued to water the young plants every day with care. they found out that it was difficult to grow carrots in this weather
so they removed the clusters and planted them separately. After this, the growth was good. Children were unfamiliar with
basil but mrs. Cynthia explained its benefits and distributed the leaves to students and teachers when it was harvested.
Carrot and radish were harvested after the third month.
mrs. meyer came armed with knitting needles and yarn to the school. She gave the students and the tailoring staff an
introductory class on the basics of knitting. Slowly along with mrs. Cynthia and ms. florence, she taught how to knit a
small animal doll step by step. many children had many doubts about the process and they cleared it by approaching the
teachers without feeling shy. mrs. meyer suggested that the children will be able to finish the doll with a little bit of practice
every day during free time. this was done and by January 19th everyone had finished their dolls. mr and mrs. meyer
visited again helping everyone to attach key rings to the knitted dolls. everyone was pleased.

our community college aims to empower the poor through specially
designed practical courses such as life Skills, Communication Skills,
Basic Computer Applications and Spoken english. this provides a boost
to the self-esteem and confidence of the students. they feel empowered and
are ready to see themselves as equal members of the society. kCC is open to
students who have passed 10th or 12th standard as well as school dropouts and
those from difficult family backgrounds or those who may have suffered abuse. the
college is housed in the same campus as the Ark primary School at eraiyur.
the college is approved by the tamilnadu open university and offers courses such as the
following with 40 day internship.
Diploma in Computer Applications (DCAS); Diploma in kindergarten teachers training;
Diploma in home Appliance & repairing Service (DhrS); Desk top publishing (Dtp);

this year the college staff and students visited nearly 20 villages around eraiyur distributing nearly
15,000 flyers and canvassing for the courses. kCC has a team of 4 faculty members, programme
Coordinator, principal and a Director. Whenever a new batch joins, a careful assessment is done
and orientation is given to the new students about all the courses so that they know the benefits
of each course. the orientation also helps them understand how they can maximise the learning
from each course through following a proper learning methodology.
this year the students were involved as volunteers in the school programs. this was done with
the objective of helping them overcome shyness, display confidence and develop leadership
skills.

To equip the students with the necessary soft skills so that they are confident about themselves and
are able to express their knowledge, abilities and concerns.
At the karunakarya Community College, the soft skills training are given parallel importance as we find that many of the
students come from backgrounds that sap them of their energy and positive outlook in life. our first interaction with the
students give them an idea abut the course they are about to study and encourages them to have a rational approach to
it. We discuss with them and give them guidance on how to handle, overcome and cope with fear, anger, verbal abuse,
failure, criticism and conflict. Communication skills are also given a systematic approach and all the students performed
well in the tnou exam Communication Skill conducted on 30.06.2014.

many school children from slum and rural areas are unable to complete
their school education because of inability to cope with homework and
study needs. lack of support from parents due to their illiteracy and poverty
is also a cause. karunakarya has been reaching out to this need in three centres,
two in the city and one in eraiyur village. the two centres in the city run evening
tuitions for children belonging to periyar nagar and kuppam in thiruvanmiyur.
the city tuition centres registered a total of 170 students and this is proof that this
service is valuable for the children. the village centre also showed a good turn out of 40.

previous records and house visits. the distribution is
done in the month of July across
all the tuition centres.
bOOK faIr VISIT To expose the children to literary activities that are
available for them to participate and benefit.
Senior children from the tuition centres were taken to
the 38th Chennai Book fair in the month of January,
2015. the Chennai Book fair is a hugely popular
annual event organised every year and brings
together various publications both in tamil and
english. there are special programs and speeches in
the evenings staged for the visiting public.
lIbrary VISIT To develop a reading habit and learn
how to use a library
30 children from the tuition centres were taken by
their teachers to visit the Anna Centenary library in
kotturpuram. the teachers gave them inputs on how
to find where the books are kept, how to take notes
and how to do research in the quiet atmosphere.
the children were awed by the huge library, the
collection of books and the facilities available. they
were encouraged to become members in libraries
near their homes.

as eraiyur came together for this mega celebration
on 7.12.2014. the students from each tuition centre
had prepared and come ready with cultural programs

to host a science exhibition . Seen here are the
tuition children from thiruvanmiyur. With a lot of
effort and hard work - they presented many projects
such as rain Water harvesting, Beating heart,

The SucceSS STOrIeS from the tuition centres are not only
about academic achievements. good academic performance is given
importance and additionally the individual need of the child is looked
into keenly by the teachers and
necessary action is taken.
many times we have realised that the academic performance suffers
due to other behavioural issues such as selfishness, laziness,
cleanliness issues, attitude towards learning, extreme shyness, low
self-confidence etc. the teachers apply many methods to tackle these
issues - one on one sessions, counseling for parents, patient guidance,
firm action and rewards when improvement is seen.
We do the best we can to help children believe that they can overcome
their problems in life with sincere effort.

Amidst superheroes with superpowers who woo children with their bravado - our
powerzone programme continues to give ‘real’ power to the children in the tuition
centres, kids and youth clubs at karunakarya. this programme seeks to compensate
for the loss of holistic and moral teaching in regular schools. twice every month,
children are taught about discipline and good manners. the students are encouraged to
practice love, forgiveness, sharing and honesty in their daily lives. teacher timothy and his
team communicate to the children effectively through innovative puppet shows, charts, moral
stories, songs, tricks, games and other activities. these powerzone sessions ensure long-term
benefits for the young minds and give them an assurance of normalcy in their lives. they also
experience empowerment through the positive messages and qualities they imbibe through the
powerzone sessions. obedience was a topic that was stressed upon in all the centres this year.

karunakarya operates educational sponsorships and medical sponsorships
on a regular basis. emergency or Crisis sponsorships are given whenever
such a situation arises. the process for identifying sponsorship needs are
rigourous. the social worker submits the request along with a detailed report of
the individual, his/her background, specific need and the assessment and granting
of help is done carefully.
every year at least 100 students benefit from sponsorships in any one of the following
categories - books, uniform, bags and fees (school & college). those receiving help with
educational fees are met regularly and encouraged to pursue the studies with sincerity. the social
worker also keeps a record of their performance. in the case of medical sponsorships, follow
up by the social worker with regards to how the individual is recovering, whether the medication
is consumed in the right manner and the whether the person is taking effort to prevent further
infections and illness is also noted.

this year little Basha from thiruvanmiyur
kuppam has also been assisted by
karunakarya for occupational therapy
sessions for an entire year. previously he
was unable to understand speech but now
he is able to understand what his mother
says to him and is able to play with other
children. this has been possible because of
the speech therapy. Sponsorships are just not
about monetary aid. many times it gives hope
for the future. Seen to the left is a girl and her

Special Initiatives for the gypsy community
our work with gypsy children in the thiruvanmiyur area in Chennai
has continued successfully. the youth and children feel comfortable to
interact and participate in the events organised for them.
We have moved forward from just summer camps to more focussed events
and programs that cater to their needs specifically. gypsies face many challenges
in their day to day to life as their lifestyle is perceived as not acceptable by the
mainstream society. this year we have organised many events for them such as :-
orientation on Cultural Activities
pre-marriage Counseling
Breaking obstacles
Awareness on reservation for gypsy community in education & employment

the youth members of the various karunakarya centres got to participate
in many useful workshops this year. We have been able to conduct
events and programs for them in such a way that the participating youth
gained confidence in themselves and they were encouraged to be harbingers
of change in their communities. youth programmes are planned in such a way
that the youth from the various centres of karunakarya both in Chennai and its
outskirts gather to participate. events are also planned specifically for location based
youth groups according to their specific needs. through these efforts the energy and
the exuberance of youth are positively channelised.
A visit to the to ttk hospital at indira nagar on 26.4.2014 for Awareness on Alcoholism program
was conducted for the youth from the urban areas - periyar nagar, thiruvanmiyur kuppam,
and p.k. street. the chief counsellor gave an introduction to the subject and answered the many
questions raised by the youth. this even saw 25 enthusiastic participants which was encouraging.
in october and november, programmes on ‘Anger management’ and ‘overcoming Suicidal
thoughts’ were arranged for the youth and around 50 youth participated in each. how to channel
anger constructively was explained clearly by the resource person and games were conducted to
explain the concept. the power of positive thinking was reiterated in the second workshop and it
left the youth energised and positive to face any situations that life throws at them.
Another well received event was the ‘orientation on four Wheeler and two Wheeler session.’ it
was conducted for youth on 26.7.14 at periyar nagar, karunakarya office. the opportunities,
requirements, selection criteria were also explained and the resource person ms.Durga of Durga

the tournament gave life-testimonies at the end
which were useful and motivational.

big hit. An intense session on ‘relationships’ the next
day answered many of the youths’ questions. games
kept the spirits high ! here again it was wonderful to

the role played by a woman in her family is very significant. When
she is strong and supports the family members physically and mentally,
the family is stable and progressive. keeping this in mind, karunakarya
has continuously hosted workshops, training sessions, talks and events that
stress on issues that the woman can control and master. health and hygiene,
Child care and rearing, home and financial management, vocational training are
the areas that were given focus this year. the women also enjoy coming together as
a team to interact and share their concerns. the team at karunakarya strives to make
these programmes both useful and fun for the women to attend. this approach helps the
women imbibe the core message with enthusiasm and to de-stress at karunakarya. for example,
at the end of the Anger management session, mrs. megala from thiruvanmiyur kuppam shared
an incident in her home that led to the arrest of her husband which could have been avoided if the
anger had been managed.

karuna Creations is the self-sustainable unit functioning under
karunakarya trust, in which the underprivileged or those with physical/
emotional/mental challenges are integrated and trained in the creation of
textile products and bead work as a means of rehabilitation and self-reliance.
this gives the participants a real work environment and an opportunity to earn
as well. the products made in this process are then sold and the profit is again
used for other projects run by the trust. this year we have added new products
such as loopshawls and utensilio. the women took part in a knitting project in the
school as an exposure and trial for future expansion of skill training for the women from
the surrounding village area. in January 2015 one of the key persons running the unit suffered
a terrible fire accident and was hospitalised for a long time reducing the team to two ladies in the
eraiyur unit. however, we were able to overcome the difficulties because at that time there was
not much pressure of orders to be completed.
