“Optics Outreach” An outreach program entitled “Light Based
Technologies” was conducted on 22nd August 2017, at
Government Degree College, Mulugu, Warangal
District of Telangana, which is located at 60 kms
from National Institute of Technology, Warangal. The
aim of this activity is to give awareness about
current application of light based technologies in our
daily life and to motivate under-graduate students
towards Optics and Photonics technologies.
There was a talk by Prof. M. Sai Shankar on
“Lasers and Applications.” SPIE Student members
interacted with students of the visiting place, and
demonstrated the exhibits related to basic optics,
optical fibers and laser based experiments.
About 150 students, 20 faculty members of
Government Degree College, Mulugu attended the
session and visited the exhibits. About 25 student
members participated and volunteered in the event.

With the help of SPIE activity grant 2017 the members of
SPIE student chapter NIT Warangal visited the Research
Centre Imarat (RCI), DRDO laboratory, to get awareness
about the Development of Missile Systems in India on 6th
October 2017. Total number of Students participated in this
event is 42.
Research Centre Imarat is a premiere DRDO
laboratory located in Hyderabad. The lab is responsible for
Research and Development of Missile Systems, Guided
Weapons and advanced Avionics for Indian Armed Forces. It
was established by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam in 1988.
Currently the lab is creating optics and optoelectronic
systems required for the missile systems.
Activity-III
“Industrial Trip”
On 06th October 2017, we got an opportunity to
visit Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad. This is a
part of educational tour conducted by SPIE NITW student
chapter.
To reach RCI we hired a private bus and we started
our journey from Warangal to Hyderabad at 7 AM. We
reached RCI at 11 AM.
First, we had an orientation program, in which RCI
project engineers and scientists explained about ongoing
projects. They also explained most of the electronics and
Optics parts of a missile and its navigation.
Next, we visited Imaging Infrared Laboratory,
where we saw Infrared seekers and imaging optics.
Then we went to the Avionics & Navigation system
Laboratory, They explained about inertial navigation system
in which we get to know the working principle of
navigation system. They have demonstrated various Optics,
Optoelectronics and Laser based systems.
• As this is a Defence laboratory, due to security
reasons taking photographs is prohibited inside and
premises of RCI campus.
The chapter students participated in the technical
fest “Technozion ” during 27 - 28 October 2017 which is
a popular technical event, conduct by NIT Warangal.
Graduate students, post-graduate students all over India,
attends this event and present their technical work in the
form of research papers, articles and prototypes.
The student chapter members exhibited, optics
and optics based experiments in this event. The exhibit
was visited by most of the attendees of the event.

“Technical Talk”
One day seminar entitled on “Light With Twist –
Celebrating 25 years of OAM beams” was organized by
SPIE student chapter on 29th October 2017 under the
category of Academic Activities/Technical Talks.
Prof. R.P. Singh was invited to deliver a talk on
Orbital Angular Momentum beams and their applications.
He has given a overview on the title and presented various
experiments for observing OAM beams. At the end of the
talk, speaker presented some of his experimental results.
There was a session of interaction was organized,
to interact with the speaker.
In between we provided refreshments to the
student participants. At the end of the session the faculty
advisor gave a token of memento to the guest speaker.

SPIE Discussion forum: The member recruitment event will be for
recruiting new members, renewal of old memberships and also for
electing new organizing body for the student chapter and monthly
informal discussion on various current research topics by the students.
Outreach Activity: To disseminate the fundamental knowledge of
various optical phenomena of day to day life, in the minds of younger
generation, we are planning to organize the Optics outreach programs.
The main focus of the program is visiting the various schools and
colleges for promoting the optical knowledge to secondary school
children, Intermediate students and under graduate students. The basic
concepts of Optics and light will be explained with help of
demonstrations, attractive exhibits by using optics outreach kits and some
of the experiments designed by members.
Activities that Build Industry Connections: For the assimilation of the
optical knowledge, to acclimatize the industrial work culture, and to
further the professional development of the students, an industrial tour
to a well reputed photonic industry is planned. SPIE chapter
members can get an in depth awareness of the industrial production
of photonic instruments by this event.
Academic Activities/Technical Talks: A two day workshop, focusing on
recent advancements in photonics. Also, there will be couple of lectures
by photonics faculty of our institute. This event is for diffusing
knowledge of optics, exclusively for students of graduation and post-
graduation. Also there will be a session to visit the Optics and Photonics
laboratories of the host institute, for the participants.
