IN OUR PARISH
PARISH PROJECTSAs good stewards of your generosity, the Facilities Team is pleased to provide you regular updates on St. Matthew campus projects, improvements, and ongoing initiatives providing a safe, healthy, and prayerful environment.In the words of our school principal, John Rathburn, “Another great week at school. It seems like each day gets better and better.” The Facilities Team is doing their part with nightly cleaning and sanitizing while completing maintenance projects during the day.After almost a year of planning and approvals, the construction of our east property line fence has finally commenced. Our team cleared the path. The fence line has been graded flat and posts are being set. The fencing will be installed with gates to retrieve the occasional runaway soccer ball. A rear fence has been added to control playground access from the back of the school.Some time ago, a path and a bridge were added to give walkers from Jonsol Court easy access to our campus. We are now making it easier for walkers from Helmbright Drive. Following our team clearing bushes and trimming up trees along the street and through the generosity of one of our member families, a sidewalk has been laid from Helmbright to the sidewalk in front of The Rectory. This will be a welcome addition for those walking to school and church.Remember the Nativity set that we introduced to our Parish last Christmas, which is close to 100 years old and found during a church renovation in the Cleveland area a few years ago? Although it was a mass-produced set, not many have survived 100 years. The set was in poor condition but we felt worth saving with your help. Blessed Mary and a Wiseman were delivered this week and are on display in the Gathering Space with before pictures. We are still several thousand dollars short for total restoration. We could use your help; just mark your contribution for the Nativity. Contributions of $1,000 or more will be recognized in our Wish Book. Thank you!We appreciate this opportunity to provide updates on our highly active campus. Please don’t hesitate to text or email suggestions on how we can better serve you. Contact George Harvey at [email protected] or text 330-904-1083. Stay healthy and God Bless.
ST. MATTHEW & ST. MICHAEL, PRAY FOR US!By Michelle Dougherty, Office and Ministry CoordinatorWe began this past week with the Feast of St. Matthew, our parish patron saint, on Monday, September 21, and I’ve always loved the hope that’s in Matthew’s story. I’ve been thinking, however, about how hope makes us vulnerable. Hope requires letting down our guard. I think it’s interesting, then, that the next major saint we celebrate in the liturgical calendar is St. Michael the Archangel – our defender and protector.When I was a child, I always loved the Feast of the Archangels, which is coming up this Tuesday, September 29. My Catholic school in Illinois was named after St. Michael, and at the all school Mass on the Feast of the Archangels, all the students who were named after the Archangels processed in, led by the youngest. It was a big day for 5-year-old me.As I got older, my excitement over this saint waned. While I could recite the Prayer to St. Michael at lightning speed, it always seemed dramatic and excessive: “Prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls”? Wasn’t that a bit much?And then I became an adult and started to see the world with different eyes. My husband will tell you that I’m generally hopelessly optimistic, but even I couldn’t ignore the very real evil in the world. I started to rethink my attitude toward the Prayer to St. Michael and toward the role of St. Michael as my patron. I found myself reciting his prayer in the middle of the night when anxious thoughts kept me awake.Once I had kids, I returned to St. Michael even more and taught my kids to call on him, as well. (One of my favorite stories about my middle child is that when he was in kindergarten and was asked by his teacher to describe a saint, he said, “St. Michael: He keeps us safe!”)So now, here I am, praying the Prayer to St. Michael all the time. And as I write this, I’m thinking about the two saints whose feast days bracket this week: St. Matthew and St. Michael. Through them, we can remember two important truths of our faith: we are called, and we are protected.St. Matthew and St. Michael, pray for us!

TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 27, 2020
There is still a lot about this Fall that is different, but the Columbus 40 Days for Life Campaign is returning and will be outside of Planned Parenthood is an opportunity to join pro
-life efforts around the globe united to end abortion. Please join us in this parish-wide opportunity! We will be observing full safety and social distancing protocols; it isn’t political;
and it actively saves and redeems lives in line with Church Teaching.
What is 40 Days for Life? 40 Days for Life is an international campaign hosted in more than 600 cities across the globe to use the power of prayer, fasting, and peaceful protest to help bring about an end to abortion. It is following the words of our Lord in the Gospels when he admonished that “This kind will only come out through prayer and fasting.” It also raises community awareness about the presence of abortion in the neighborhood and nearby places where women and families experiencing pregnancy can get help. Why Should We Participate? Praying at an abortion clinic can seem a little daunting. It may be helpful to know that the clinic is generally open on Wednesdays from 10am until 6pm, but actual hours seem to vary. Our presence there will bring our most powerful weapon—prayer– to the site of the abortion clinic. Since 2007, five locations in and around Columbus that have been part of our sidewalk prayer and counseling program and 40 Days for Life campaigns have either shut or stopped performing abortions. With two left in Columbus, we are not quitting until they do. Is it safe, and What Do I need to Know? Abortion and Planned Parenthood tend to target neighborhoods that experience more poverty and more crime, and that is true here. However, it is generally safe during daylight hours. We always encourage prayer and witness to happen in groups of at least two for safety. Local police are aware of our campaign and familiar with 40 Days and other prayer programs. There is on-street parking on South Hampton Road. The clinic will most likely be closed, but should you encounter someone needing help, the Women’s Care Center is located directly east of the abortion clinic (across South Hampton Rd). You can also access local pregnancy help 24/7 anywhere in the US by calling 1-712-HELP. We are asking that participants with 40 Days for Life are especially observant not to trespass. Stay on the sidewalk or the treelawn. Do not block the sidewalk, and do not pass onto the parking lot or the grassy area between the fence and the sidewalk. Planned Parenthood has been aggressively pursuing trespass complaints. We also know that this is a busy time for those engaged in political campaigning. 40 Days is intended to be peaceful and not political in nature—use the opportunity to be prayerful rather than political. How do I sign up? Sign up for an hour at with sign up genius at: https://bit.ly/3kmUchG or contact Jim Gernetzke at: [email protected] or 614-352-1191. You can access more helpful information, find prayer resources, or sign up for a different hour during the 40 Days campaign by visiting: www.gcrtl.org and selecting “40 Days for Life” under the event tab.

This event is subject to future directives issued by state and public health officials. To register for this seminar, visit ohiodominican.edu/FaithSeminar.
BEWARE OF PHONY EMAILS AND TEXTS STILL CIRCULATING During the past few weeks there have again been numerous phony emails sent to unsuspecting persons (clergy, teachers, parishioners, others) from alleged priests of the Diocese requesting funds to purchase various gift cards for alleged charitable and pastoral reasons. Please be aware that there is a new scam using text messages to convey similar requests. If you receive any kind of communication, please contact the person directly to verify the authenticity of the solicitation or, at least to notify the person that a scam is underway using their identity. Thank you.
