Fairmount Temple Embarks on an Exciting JourneyAs Rabbi Nosanchuk Named Senior Rabbi

This is an exciting time for Fairmount Temple as we experience a renewal of energy within

our walls and beyond, as we explore new avenues of worshipping and learning together, and

as we begin to welcome our new Senior Rabbi – Rabbi Robert A. Nosanchuk.

Rabbi Nosanchuk, who will join us in July 2010, has been Senior Rabbi since 2004 at

Northern Virginia Hebrew Congregation, a 480-family congregation in Reston, Virginia.

After being a solo rabbi in his current congregation, he is looking forward to developing a

true partnership with our clergy and with you. He is personable, kind, and down to earth.

His sermons are inspiring and he has a passion for teaching. He enjoys making connections

among people and being a presence in the larger Jewish community. He has creative ideas

for moving our historic congregation forward.

Prior to his tenure at Northern Virginia, Rabbi Nosanchuk served as Associate Rabbi at Baltimore Hebrew Congregation, a

congregation of 1,600 families. Additional experience includes Rabbinical Intern at Temple Beth El of NorthernWestchester in

New York, Education Director for the Agency for Jewish Education of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, and

Assistant Director of URJ Camp Harlam. He is a member of the Reform Movement’s Joint Commission on Lifelong Jewish

Learning and a visiting faculty member of the URJ Kutz Camp-Institute for Reform Jewish Teens. Rabbi Nosanchuk is a

graduate of HebrewUnion College – Jewish Institute of Religion (NewYork) and has aMasters of Arts in Hebrew Literature and

in Jewish Communal service. He graduated fromMichigan State University with a Bachelors of Arts in Humanities in 1991.

Rabbi Nosanchuk’s wife, Joanie Berger, grew up in Shaker Heights and they have two young children. They are very much

looking forward to being with Joanie’s family in Cleveland, and being closer to the rabbi’s family in Michigan.

(see his message on page 2)

We are grateful to Cantor Sarah Sager, Rabbi Joshua Caruso, and Rabbi Arturo Kalfus for working so hard to help our

synagogue flourish during these past two years. They have come to know Rabbi Nosanchuk during this process and

know that when you meet him, you will be very happy to welcome him and his family into our synagogue home.

(see clergy column, page 2)

I also want to thank our Search Committee, chaired by AmyWain Garnitz and Mort Levin, for their deliberate and thoughtful

search for a rabbi to lead us into the next era at Fairmount Temple. Formore than a year, itsmembersworked tirelessly to identify

our synagogue’s goals and needs, and to clarify exactly what we hoped to find in a spiritual leader (see their column on page 2).

On a more personal note, I cannot express enough how excited I am for Fairmount Temple to have Rabbi Nosanchuk join us.

You will have opportunities over the course of the next year to meet him in person and you will begin to know why I am so

“To EverythingThere is a Season…”

For the past two years, Rabbi Kalfus, Cantor Sagerand I have striven to build a collegial relationshipbased on trust, respect, and a shared love forAnsheChesed Fairmount Temple. Our partnership hasresulted in positive change for our congregation –inside and out! In Worship (our Kabbalat Shabbatservice regularly welcomes 250 joyfulworshippers), Lifelong Learning (our preschool,Religious School, and adult education programsare top notch), and Social Action (our temple is aproven leader in working towards social change inNortheast Ohio), Fairmount Temple is strong andthriving.Your clergy have worked hard in hopes ofreaching the moment when our congregationwould be ready to welcome a new senior rabbi.Thetime has come.

It is with great anticipation that we look forward topartnering with Rabbi Robert Nosanchuk, the newsenior rabbi of Fairmount Temple. Leah and I wereprivileged to spend some time with Rob and hisfamily and quickly developed a strong connection.I realized how easily the Nosanchuk family fits inwith our community. As his future colleague, I amhappy to share with you that Rob is wise, visionary, and a real mensch. He is a rabbi who chooses tolead with his actions, as well as his words. As youget to know him, I am confident that RabbiNosanchuk is someone this congregation will beproud to call its rabbi. On behalf of the clergy, weare pleased to welcome him to our community fullof people of loving kindness.

May we move from strength to strength!

For A NewOpportunity…

I am proud to join the clergy team atAnshe Chesed

Fairmount Temple, beginning next summer.

Thank you so much for this incredible

opportunity!

My wife Joanie Berger and I were married in

Cleveland 11 years ago, and we have visited the

Midwest many times to draw near to family for

holiday celebrations. Now we are enthusiastic

about visiting the synagogue where my rabbinate

will find a new home next year.

I am especially drawn to serve as a rabbi at Anshe

Chesed, where there is such a proud history of

Reform Jewish learning, worship and social action.

I hope we will come to share together a vision of

making our synagogue a place of discovery- where

our highest ideals can become a reality.

In the coming months, I will continue to serve as

rabbi at Northern Virginia Hebrew Congregation

(http://nvhcreston.org), as they search for a new

rabbi, while I begin to meet you on visits to

Cleveland. You may wish to see the website of my

current synagogue to learn about some of the

collaborative and exciting work in which I have

been engaged. For now I look forward to following

the activities at Anshe Chesed- talking with clergy,

lay leaders, staff and members to plan a transition

together to an exciting new time in temple life.

I hope this summer brings you and your loved

ones many sweet blessings!

Rabbi Rob Nosanchuk

For an ExcitingFuture!

In the fall of 2007, Board President Brian Young

created the Senior Rabbi Search Committee, a

committee representing the diversity of our

Congregation’s membership.

This Committee met with Rabbi Hesch Sommer,

Placement Director of the Central Conference of

American Rabbis, and Rabbi Steve Mills,

Regional Director of the URJ. They assisted us in

assessing the needs of our Congregation, and

establishing a Senior Rabbi Profile prior to our

embarking on the interview process. This was

followed by congregational surveys and focus

groups, and several congregational town hall

meetings to gather input from our members and

constituent groups.

Following a lengthy application submitted to the

Central Conference of American Rabbis, we

conducted telephone interviews with 14 Rabbis

and invited seven to visit us in Cleveland. The

Committee then visited two applicants at their

current congregation, including Rabbi Nosanchuk

in Virginia. After this visit, we invited him back to

Cleveland so more of our staff, clergy, Board, and

others could meet him and his wife, Joanie Berger.

The Committee unanimously recommended to

the Executive Committee that Rabbi Nosanchuk

be hired as our Senior Rabbi, which was

approved unanimously by both the Executive

Committee and Board.

We are very excited and proud to have Rabbi

Nosanchuk in place to become our spiritual leader

starting July, 2010, and he will be visiting us

several times prior to his starting. We thank our

entire Search Committee: Jeff Blank, Peter Brosse,

Marcel Duhamel, Jim Levine, Karen Moses,

Marguerite Morris, Julie Raskind, Steven Schlein,

Will Sukenik, Penny Weinberg, Marcia Wexberg

and Brian Young, who contributed so much time

and energy to the process, and also a special

thanks to Rabbi Chuck Kroloff, who was with us

the last two High Holy Days, who gave us

invaluable guidance and assistance.

Shalom Means both Hello and GoodbyeAs we welcome Rabbi Nosanchuk and his family we also have to sadly say goodbye to a member of

our current family. Executive Director Shea Waldron and her family will be moving to Atlanta this

summer. We are sad to see them go as they have been part of this synagogue community for so long,

first as members, and then as part of the staff family when Shea was named Executive Director in

2002. This is an exciting opportunity for Shea and Rich and we wish them the best as they start this

next chapter in their lives in Georgia. A search committe is underway to fill the position.

The congregation will have the opportunity to thank Shea for her dedication and service on Friday,

July 10, at the 6:15 p.m. Kabbalat Shabbat. It will be followed by a cool’n’crispy oneg. We hope you

will join us as we wish Shea and her family well.

Fairmount Temple has a rich history of Social Action, going back even before Rabbi Lelyveld’s participation in the Civil Rights movements in the south. It’s a history of which we are to be proud, and excited that today that passion for Social Action in thriving.

What is Social Action? Many things fall under this heading, and opportunities are evolving as our world does. A year ago we began exploring avenuesof focusing on societal changes to make a difference. Today, while this continues, we are experiencing all around us the drastic change in our nation’seconomy. Congregants who were in secure jobs just a year ago may now find themselves dealing with job loss or decreased income.

Fairmount Temple’s Congregation Based Community Organizing (CBCO) and new Economic Crisis Task Force are busier than ever.

We need your help in growing and offering what is needed in our community by helping answer questions. If you are on our Congregationale-mail list, you should have received an e-mail in late June with three important surveys:

✓✓One is to identify your concerns about the status of health care in this country. This issue has emerged out of individual and group discussions

with congregants as an area of concern that we will have more power to affect if we work together.

✓✓One is a Needs and Resources Assessment. Are you trying to get rid of baby clothes you don’t need any more or are you in need of gently worn

baby clothes? Would you love to get out of the house for an hour, but would rather not leave your ill spouse alone? Are you looking for a job and

would like to make your resume available to members of our congregation? We hope to discover ways for our congregants to help each other.

✓✓One is a Congregational Business Directory. This will be a directory of businesses of any size that are owned or managed by congregants. Our

hope is that this directory will serve as a resource for congregants looking for products, services, or networking opportunities. Let’s support each

other’s businesses!

• If you received the surveys via e-mail and haven’t completed them, please take a few minutes to do so.

• If you are not on our e-mail list or no longer have the link available, go to www.fairmounttemple.org and click on the SURVEY link to take youdirectly to the online survey. If you do not receive our Congregational E-mail newsletter (comes out about once a month with updates), e-mail

Laura Munson at [email protected].

• If you don’t have access to e-mail, call our office (216-464-1330) and ask for a SURVEY packet to be mailed to your home.We have the power to make a difference if we act as a community. Won’t you join us?

In addition to the above mentioned surveys, the Economic Crisis Task Force has been developing ways for our synagogue members torespond to each other as a community.

Group SupportFairmount Temple has arranged with Recovery Resources to provide workshops for our members on dealing with various life challenges. Thefirst workshop, “Dealing with the Emotional Effects of Unemployment on Self and Family” will be offered on Wednesday, July 22, at 7 p.m.Watch the Bulletin throughout the year for workshops on such topics as Caring for Aging Loved Ones, Stress Management, and Teenagers—An Owner’s Manual. Call Caring Community Coordinator Wendy Jacobson at 216-464-1330, ext. 162 for more information.

Grocery Gift Cards and Habitat for HumanityThe next time you are at the grocery store, buy a gift card in any amount you can donate. Drop the gift cards off at the temple office and we willmake sure they will get to congregants who can use the extra help.

Our Habitat for Humanity group has been building houses in Cleveland. If you would like to be part of this dynamic team of Fairmount Templemembers, they will be working Aug. 1 and 29. This activity is open to all skill levels.
