COMPLIMENTARY COPY Published Weekly By Joel Sater Publications www.antiquesandauctionnews.net VOL. 43, NO. 14 FRIDAY APRIL 6, 2012 am always obliged to go and gaze at a blade of grass, a pine-tree branch, an ear of wheat, to calm myself,” Vincent van Gogh wrote in a letter to his sister, Wilhemina, in July of 1889. An artist of exceptional intensity, not only in his use of color and exuberant application of paint but also in his personal life, van Gogh was powerful- ly and passionately drawn to nature. From 1886, when van Gogh left Antwerp for Paris, to 1890 when he ended his own life in Auvers, van Gogh’s feverish artistic experimentation and zeal for the natural world propelled him to radically refash- ion his still lifes and landscapes. With an ardent desire to engage the viewer with the strength of the emotions he experienced before nature, van Gogh radically altered and at times even aban- doned traditional pictorial strategies in order to create still lifes and landscapes, the likes of which had never before been seen. Van Gogh Up Close, a major exhibition organized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Canada, presents a group of the artist’s most daring and innovative works that broke with the past and dra- matically altered the course of modern painting. The exhibition opened in February, but Spring seems the perfect season to check it out. Created between 1886 and 1890 in Paris, Arles, Saint-Rémy, and Auvers, the works in the exhi- bition concentrate on an important and previously overlooked aspect of van Gogh’s work: “close-ups” that bring familiar subjects such as landscape elements, still lifes, and flowers into the extreme fore- ground of the composition or focus on them in ways that are entirely unexpected and without precedent. These landscapes and still lifes have not previously been seen together or identified before as crit- ical to our understanding of van Gogh’s artistic achievement. Van Gogh Up Close, includes major loans from museums and private collections in Europe, North America, and Japan, and can be seen in the United States only in Philadelphia (through May 6, 2012) before traveling to the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. The exhibition is accom- panied by a fully illustrated cata- logue and offers a wide range of programs. Up Close features over 70 works, includ- ing 46 paint- ings by van Gogh and more than 30 comparative works like Japanese wood- block prints by Utagawa Hiroshige and Hayashi Roshü; European prints and drawings by Jean Corot, Camille Pissarro, and Jacob Ruisdael; and photographs by Frederick Evans, August Kotzsch, and others. Van Gogh was an avid collector of Japanese and European prints and drawings by artists whose aesthetic devices served as sources of inspiration for him. While van Gogh was loudly dis- missive of photography, the medi- um offers intriguing parallels with his work and it is possible that van Gogh would have been fascinated by contemporary landscape pho- tographs. “The exhibition explores an important facet of van Gogh’s work that underscores his impor- tance as a path-finding modern artist,” comments Timothy Rub, the George D. Widener Director and CEO of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. “In seeking to share the intensity of his emotional response to the world around him as directly as possible, van Gogh took the traditional methods mak- ing pictures and changed the rules.” After unsuccessfully pursuing careers as an art dealer, teacher, and pastor, Vincent van Gogh (1853- 1890), prompted by his brother Theo, began to study art in 1880. In the Netherlands in 1885, he completed his first major works using a palette of browns, greens, grays, and blacks. A year later, his work underwent a striking shift when, arriving in Paris, he was confronted for the first time by the Impressionist paintings of Monet, Pissarro, Renoir, and by the new pointillist works of Seurat and others. These progressive artists inspired him to lighten his palette and modernize his brushstroke. At roughly the same time, van Gogh began to collect Japanese woodblock prints, fascinat- ed by their vibrant color, high horizon lines, tilting perspectives, and truncated or unusually cropped edges. These influences encouraged van Gogh to experiment with a radical treat- ment of field and space, flatten- ing and compressing the picture plane in his paintings in order to create a sense of shifting perspec- tive and tension. Working initially in the apart- ment he shared with Theo in Montmartre, van Gogh painted a series of still lifes of flowers and fruit such as Still Life with Pears (1888, Gemäldegalerie Neue Meister, Dresden) and Sunflowers (1887, Metropolitan Museum of Art). In these works, objects are often seen from above, yet are placed very close to the picture plane in a tightly cropped space Explore Nature This Spring... which provides no clues totheir context or setting. Piecesof fruit appear to tip forwardand threaten to roll out of thepicture. Van Gogh’s land-scapes such as Undergrowth(1887, Centraal Museum,Utrecht) stress the abundanceof grasses and flowers by

cropping out thehorizon.

By thespring of 1888,troubled byintense personalanxieties, vanGogh soughtrefuge from citylife and movedto Arles in thesouth of France. There he hopedto emulateJapanese artists, working in closecommunion withnature andstudying “a sin-gle blade of

grass” in order to better com-prehend nature as a whole.Landscapes such as Fieldwith Flowers Near Arles(1888, Van Gogh Museum,

Amsterdam)reflect aJ a p a n e s einfluence intheir highhorizon linesand bold col-ors. Here vanGogh beganto adopt amore struc-tured, deliber-ate treatmentof his sub-jects.

The opencompositionsthat van Gogh

created in Arles gave way to aseries of landscapes paintedin Saint-Rémy, where vanGogh had committed himselfto an asylum late in 1888 afterhis break with Gauguin, andcontinued in Auvers outsideParis, where van Gogh ulti-mately took his life in 1890.In these densely packed com-positions, the artist evokedthe immediacy and closenessof his surroundings as he con-tinued to develop an intimate, close up focus. The exhibitionculminates in an audaciousseries of still lifes which werepainted outdoors and take astheir subject an extremelyclose view of a clump of iris,an upward gaze through a tan-gle of almond branches, or thevibrant patterning of aDeath’s-head moth. In theseworks van Gogh closes in on

his subject, dramaticallyreducing the depth of fieldand maximizing the expres-sive impact of his brushworkand color.

WITH PETER S. SEIBERTThis Week: PoliticallyIncorrect Collecting

Peter Swift Seibert

Some weeks back, myorganization (the NationalCouncil for HistoryEducation) hosted a confer-ence in Columbia, SouthCarolina, on the history of thecivil rights movement inAmerica. One of our keynote

speakers was Rep. JimClyburn, who has served inthe U.S. House formany years and isa ranking mem-ber on theDemocraticside. He alsois a formerhigh schoolhistory andsocial stud-ies teacher. He was com-menting about

the level ofpolitical dis-course in WashingtonD.C. right now, and heraised a really interest-ing point that as loversof history, we shouldnot forget.

American politicshas always had its uglyand unseemly side. It’sonly with the advent of24-hour news andInternet blogging thatit has been raised to amedia blitz art form. The use of innuendoand smear in Americanpolitics has a long andrich history. From

charges of bigamy and father-ing an illegitimate child to

fistfights on the floor ofthe Senate and

House, we have arich tradition ofrough andtumble. Suchp o l i t i c a lunpleasant-ness is evi-dent in thecollect ibles

and antiquesthat we see

today.The trick with

political collectibles is toreally see where the line ofgood taste goes. A button orbadge that questions a per-son’s patriotism or loyalty isprobably a non-starter. On theother hand, one that pokesfun at a Presidential pet(Socks the cat or LBJ’s dog)or kidding a First Lady(Mamie, pack your bags asthe Stevenson’s are coming)is highly desirable.

I have long championedcollecting American politicalmemorabilia for this reason. It is not only educational on

An economic downturndisrupted the American mar-ketplace, and unemploymentreached double digits. Urbandwellers retreated to thecountry, embracing asimple and moral workethic, and sought a pathto a better life by work-ing on farms and mak-ing things by hand.

This may sound likethe times we are livingin today, but similar cir-cumstances in the 1890sled artists to embracethe concept of integrat-ing art into everyday

life, using native craft tradi-tions and indigenous materi-als to produce decorativeobjects that were simple in

form and functional indesign.

The Arts and Craftsand modernist studiocraft movements ins o u t h e a s t e r nPennsylvania produced adiverse body of work, and makers of contem-porary studio craft con-tinue to explore freshideas and new designs.Whether a mosaic tile,an abstract form inwood, a wall sculpture,or a ceramic vessel, these nonverbal forms ofhuman expression notonly reflect cultural val-ues but have the powerto transform everydaylives.

The creative energy, broad technical reper-toire, and innovativedesigns of these artists aresubjects of the MichenerArt Museum’s new instal-

lation of work by studio craftartists of the DelawareValley. “Intelligent Design,”the permanent exhibition thatopened February 3 highlightsregional studio craft from itsearliest beginnings to thediversity of expression today.

The exhibition featureswork from the studio shopsof such makers and designers

A GOOD ARGUMENT FOR SPRING CLEANING

THAT ATTIC OR BASEMENT!

PB6063

In February, Heritage Auctions (www.ha.com) sold the unbelievable comic book collection of the late Billy Wright. Wright passed away in 1994 at the age of 66. When he was growing up in the 30s and 40s, Billy, like so many kids his age, purchased comic books, on a regular basis, for the princely sum of one dime. But, unlike many, he took meticulous care of the comics, keeping them well preserved throughout his lifetime. In addition, whether he was aware of it or not, he seemed to have a knack for buying those “Golden Age” comics that would become the best and rarest in the present.

Among the standouts in the $3.5 Million sale, a Detective Comics #27appearance of Batman, brought just shy of $523,000!

Takaezu, Robert Winokur,and Matthias Pliessnig.

Over the last century, regional studio craft artistshave been creating objects inwhich the work’s designflows out of its function, itspower to elicit emotions andideas, and its ability to refer-ence a plurality of ideas andstyles. Whether craftingfor the functional, asculptural and aestheticeffect, or to explore thepossibilities of repre-sentation, these artistsproduced a rich body ofwork that bears the aes-thetic imprint of itstime.

“Intelligent Design”highlights studio craftin the Delaware Valleyregion from its earliestbeginnings to the diver-sity of expressiontoday. “The creative ener-gy, broad technical reper-toire, and innovativedesigns of the artists rep-resented here make themhighly desirable candidatesfor the Michener’s permanentcollection,” says Curator ofCollections ConstanceKimmerle. “The strong stu-dio craft tradition of south-

historical topics but it oftenapproaches complex issueswith a light touch that makesit easy to understand, and thusto collect.

Also, as we think aboutcollecting political items fromthe past, it’s a good time toconsider squirreling awaythings from present cam-paigns that could grow invalue over the years. Iremember hitting the trash-cans on election night, whereI voted in order to get a niceselection of Obama andMcCain posters that had beenchucked after the polls closed.Similarly, I frequently hauntonline venues after a race inorder to find good deals onpolitical badges from losingcandidates. The trick, and thisis important to note, is to besure and get items that wereactually used in campaigns.

There is a large market outthere for novelties, oftenmade by people in their

garages, that have marginalvalue. I have a large collec-tion of anti buttons on onecandidate but nearly all ofthem are fakes made bysomeone with a buttonmachine. How can I tell? Firstis the absence of the Unionsticker on the edge of the but-ton, that indicates it was notcommercially produced in aUnion shop. Second, the texton some is slightly off center, suggesting someone usingtheir own button machine.Third, the price was just toogood to be true. Regular read-ers know that bargains shouldalways be viewed with askeptical eye.

So in this political season, hunt out some of those vin-tage badges with a bit of anedge while also collectingsome of the new ones to setaside for the future!

thus gaining control of theentire production process.Their first mass-produced cal-ibre, the Labrador (1885), aswell as their first minute-repeater watch (1892), and the19-line calibre Omega (1894 -which eventually gave itsname to the brand), ensuredthe company’s success. Thecompany has prospered eversince and has become famousworldwide, providing the firstwatches on the moon for theNASA in 1969!

The actual watch has avery attractive gold weavebracelet. Even though thehallmarks to the clasp are notvery clear, these are mostprobably for 9 carat gold andit has been assessed in the val-uation accordingly. The hall-marks should have a date let-ter which would allow accu-rate dating to the year of pro-duction - however, thebracelet itself is earlier thanthat watch and most likelydates to the 1950s or early1960s. We valued it at $500 to$700.

AUCTION SALE BILLSREA PRESENTS

ball memorabilia, cards, box-ing, and Americana. An incred-ible T206 Wagner. A Babe Ruthbat. Muhammad Ali’s trunksfrom the “Thrilla In Manilla”fight. A 1933 Goudey Lajoie inMint condition. Babe Ruth’srookie card. We have over1,500 lots. Maybe it’s just thatwe happen to like all the itemswe accepted for auction, but tous it seems like every lot reallyis a highlight in some way.”

T206 Honus Wagner: Thefamous T206 Honus Wagnerneeds no introduction and is astar wherever he goes, but thisauction features a particularlyextraordinary example of themost valuable card in the world. The date “Oct 16 1909” isstamped in purple ink on thereverse. “This is an incredible

card with or without the stamp, but the date stamp gives thiscard an amazing significance,”notes REA president RobertLifson. “Not only is this theonly T206 Honus Wagner card

(Continued from page 12)

that actually dates itself - whichall alone is interesting as theT206 Honus Wagner card wasonly issued in 1909 - October16th is the date of the final anddeciding game of the 1909World Series between the

Pittsburgh Pirates and DetroitTigers.” REA estimates thatonly approximately fifty T206Honus Wagner cards areknown to exist. The date-stamped 1909 T206 Wagnerhas a reserve of $100,000 and isexpected to sell for more than$300,000.

1912 Ty Cobb Tobacco Tin:The finest example in existenceof the Ty Cobb Tobacco tin,one of collecting’s most leg-endary rarities, in unheard ofMINT condition. There has notbeen (and we believe never willbe) another example that cancompare to this incredible gem.The Ty Cobb Tobacco Tin isone of the most elusive of allbaseball tobacco-related items.

It has the same rarity as theT206 Ty Cobb card with TyCobb Tobacco advertising back(approximately twelve of eachare known). Even the originalblue tobacco tax stamp paperstrip is still attached. It is theonly Ty Cobb Tobacco tin onwhich the original tax stampstrip remains. (Reserve$40,000; estimate open).

1923 Babe Ruth Bat:Included in the auction is anextraordinary 1923 Babe Ruthbat. The extensive research onthis bat suggests it was proba-

bly with Ruth on opening dayat Yankee stadium in 1923. Itmay have even been used to hitthe first home run at YankeeStadium! “That is a controver-

sial claim, as another bat existsthat has a very good claim tothat honor,” notes REA offi-cials. “But at the very least it isa great Ruth bat.” It is the verysame style bat that factoryrecords show were sent to Ruthone week before Opening Day,and that he is seen holding in allphotos taken on Opening Dayin 1923.

Legendary Card RaritiesIncluding Babe Ruth Rookie. This sale will include virtuallyevery one of the baseball cardcollecting world’s most revered“Holy Grails”. In addition tothe famous T206 HonusWagner, included are all of theothers rarities of the T206 set, some with several examples. The rare T206 “Slow Joe”Doyle, NY Nat’l, one of fewerthan ten examples known toexist, is the famous Joe PelaezCollection example. One of thegreatest treasures of all tobaccocards, the only other exampleof the rare T206 Doyle thatREA has ever offered sold for$329,000 in 2009. The rareT206 Doyle has a reserve of$100,000. Not one but twoexamples of the 1916 BabeRuth rookie card are featured, one in Ex-Mt condition and onein Vg-Ex, each with a reserveof $10,000. “The Babe Ruthrookie is never going out ofstyle, and has been a particular-ly hot card in the marketplacelately,” notes REA’s RobertLifson. “These are fresh to thecollecting world examples.”The T206 Eddie Plank, anotherof card collecting’s mostfamous rarities, is representedin this auction with an astound-
