Posters were being put

up by the dozen. On theposters printed in large

writing was a notice for

over 21 to sign up for thearmy. Our reward would

be promising victory and

glory.

This war was going to

be like Playtime at KinderGarden! But the future

had other ideas. After all

the training was done wewent on a long voyage to

Gallipoli. Lots of my

mates got seasick.

We got told that we were

going to land on a lovelyplace with flat grassy

fields where we would

take the Turks bysurprise. I couldnt wait!

Time ticked by.

Suddenly I saw land. I

cast out my eyes for a

first look at the swaying

grass...were my eyes

deceiving me? I thought.

Ahead of m e was rockyjagged cliffs.

On

top of the cliffs were

Turks firing at the

Australians who had

landed before us.

I could see them falling

down like a pack ofdominos.

I closed my eyes and

counted to three. Iopened them, no this

wasnt a sleeping

nightmare, it was a livingnightmare!

April the 25th had

changed my life forever.

At training no one gave

a second thought aboutguns firing at us! My

mate and I ducked

behind a clay rock. Thenit happened.

My best friend stood up

to start firing but henever got to shoot a

bullet.

He was gone. He riskedhis life trying to safe me,

I will never forget this

moment.

After a long deadly week

we had made trenches

for us to live in.

How I missed my family,

war was horrible!

Before we left we got

Page 15: anzac keeley 2

given a bible. I read it

Page 16: anzac keeley 2

whenever I could. Soon

Page 17: anzac keeley 2

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/anzac-keeley-2 17/21

after one of my allies got

a letter from his wife it

said she had, had a baby

girl. The solider forgot

where he was and

jumped up in excitement.

He came down

instantly...dead. It was

roasting, scorching inthe summer. In winter I

was nearly frozen. All we

got to wear was singlet, shirt, coat, and shorts.

All we got to eat was

bully beef and rock hardbiscuits sometimes we

threw the biscuits at the

Turks, not my cup of tea.For a treat we had runny

jam and mouldy cheese.

Every day we got givenhalf a gallon of water for

washing and drinking.

So much for victory andglory.

On the first of June we

got two pieces of breadto last us at lest two

weeks! On Armistice

Day we had to pick up

the dead bodies. I nearly

puked at the stench! On

the way back a Turk gaveme a cigarette and some

chocolate. The next day I

shot him in the shoulder.I had had enough of this

rotten war... at midnight

the Anzacs crept to theboats. We had no choice

but to surrender. The

Great War had finished!Half our troops never

made it home. One in six

is still in Gallipoli. I amso glad I wasnt one of

them. I cant wait to get

home. There is nothinglike beautiful New

Zealand!!!
