Adur Outdoor Activities Centre

AOAC is an ideal place for you to learn to climb or develop and practice yourskills either by participating in one of our sessions or courses or throughpublic access to the wall. The wall is open 7 days a week.

AOAC is one of the only indoor climbing facilities in the area with its purposebuilt indoor wall completed in 2003 and a further development of a separatebouldering area in 2005. Come along and give it a go with our variedprogramme offering opportunities for all ages and abilities from novice toexperts.

Climbing Wall at AOACThe main wall is 10meters high with over 80 graded climbs to cater for allabilities. We aim to provide a safe enjoyable environment for climbers ofdifferent abilities with a mix of routes from F3+ to F7c which are regularlychanged by a team of experienced route setters. Climbing indoors is a greatway to keep fit all year round and many treat it as their local gym.

Bouldering We have a small dedicated bouldering area with high quality matting and awide array of problems for climbers to get stuck into.

Using the centreIf you are already an experienced climber over 18 years old and arecompetent to:

• Put on a harness correctly• Belay and lower safely• Attach yourself to a rope safely

…then you can register with us enabling you to access the wall during ouropening times as a registered climber. This also allows you to sign in amaximum of two novice or junior climbers as guests under your supervision.Registration is free, but compulsory.

Additional parental consent required for competent 16-17year olds to accessthe wall as registered climbers. Under 16s must be accompanied by aregistered competent adult climber.

AOAC CLIMBING SESSIONS & COURSESTaster SessionsThese ‘try it’ sessions are designed to introduce you to the fun of indoor climbingwithout committing to a formal course. The session lasts 1½ hours during which timeyou will have the chance to tackle roped climbs and try bouldering (un-roped climbingover a matted area) introducing a few basic skills.

Taster Session categories:‘Junior’ 8-16 years ‘Adult’ 16 plus ‘Open’ Session open to all**Open Session/Course - Any young person under the age of 18 must be accompaniedby an adult family member participating on the same session or have full consent fromparents/carers recognising that it is an ‘Open’ session.

Please note that an adult must accompany junior climbers at all times however they donot have to participate. Group Size: Maximum 8 participants per InstructorCost: Adult - £12.50 Junior (8-16yrs) - £10.00

Bespoke Sessions in School HolidaysBring the whole family or a group of friends to the Centre for a couple of hours of funand thrills on our climbing wall. Separate sessions can be organised for your groupsubject to availability and Instructors. Participants must be aged 8 years and over. Ourinstructors will give you an action packed time to help burn off that holiday energy.Group Size: Maximum 8 participants per InstructorCost: £130.00

SKILL COURSESThis programme will take you from your first steps up the wall as a complete beginnerto confident lead climbing. Each stage can be taken when you feel ready so that youprogress at your own pace.

Introduction CourseMaybe you have participated in one of our many taster sessions and decided thatclimbing is for you, or you want to take up and learn a new interest. This is thestepping stone to public access to the wall for those new to climbing. With amaximum ratio of 1 Instructor to 6 participants you will receive excellent tuition on ourintroduction courses covering general climbing wall safety, essential knots, belayingyour climbing partner and advice on equipment. Rusty Refresh SessionsGetting back into climbing and need a bit of a refresher? This 1½ hour sessionwith an instructor will get you back on track to be an independent user of the wallwith some expert coaching. Technique and MovementClimb harder with less effort and more style. This course focuses on the physicalskills and techniques that will allow you to move more fluidly in the vertical world.Based on the bouldering and traverse sections of the wall, this fun andinformative workshop aims to help you climb more efficiently by giving practicalhints and advice.Max ratio 1:6 Cost £25 - 16+ Years

Step up to Lead ClimbingGet on the sharp end of the rope! Once confident in your bottom roping skills thenext step is to progress to lead climbing. The instructor ratio of 1:4 reflects themore advanced nature of the skills required. You will also receive advice on thechoice of equipment to use such as ropes and belay devices. This is a 4 hourcourse and once completed you will have free run of the wall and all its climbs.You’ll never look back!Group Size: Maximum 4 participants per InstructorCost: £65.00Minimum climbing experience of 6months is essential - 16+ Years

Introduction to Real Rock ClimbingSpend the day climbing outside on real rock at Harrisons Rocks near TunbridgeWells. This course is best suited to those who have some climbing experience onindoor walls and would like to try climbing outside but unsure where to begin. OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNG CLIMBERSThe National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme (NICAS) is a UK wide scheme designedto promote climbing development and accredit individual achievement on artificialclimbing structures. It can be used as a starting point for people wishing to take upclimbing and mountaineering. It is open to all candidates aged 8 and upwards.

The scheme is designed to introduce youngclimbers to indoor climbing and accredittheir achievements in a series of five levels ofincreasing technical skill and responsibility.

Level 1. Foundation Climber - an entry level aimed at complete novicesLevel 2. Top rope Climber - a top roping level aimed at best practiceLevel 3. Technical Climber - focuses on technique and movement skills Level 4. Lead Climber - skills required to lead climbLevel 5. Advanced Climber - improving performance

The scheme is administered by the Association of British Climbing Walls (ABC) and issupported by the National Mountaineering Councils. Candidates purchase a log bookand must log experience to complete each level. Log book and registration fee £4.50for Part 1 £7.50 for Part 2.

Foundation ClimberThis half termly course is aimed at those who want to join our junior climbing club‘RockHoppers’. They will follow Level 1 of the National Indoor Climbing AwardScheme teaching them how to correctly put on a harness, belay safely and tie knots.Once completed climbers may choose to progress to the junior club if they wish.Group Size: Maximum 8 participants per InstructorCost: £8.00 per week payable per half termplus log bookTimes: Monday 4:30pm-6:00pm & Saturday2:00pm-3:30pm

RockHoppersOur established junior climbing club is open tothose who have completed the foundationclimber course. Here they can progressthrough the other 4 levels of the NICASscheme. Holiday Courses and SessionsThroughout the holidays we run 5-day climbing courses for 8-16 year olds. Over the 5days participants will follow the NICAS award scheme at an appropriate level. Theywill be coached in climbing skills as well as taking part in games. The fifth day will beoff-site to either a local rock outcrop or larger climbing wall.

We also run additional ‘Taster’ sessions during the school holiday week and atweekends. Please see our holiday brochure for date’s and further information oralternatively speak to a receptionist.

AOAC is more than a climbing wall. We provide a range of water and landbasedactivities as an outdoor activities centre. We have something for everyone so if youprefer ‘splashing about’ to ‘hanging around’ then check out our website or pick upone of our brochures from reception for more information.

Parties and CelebrationsHave an active birthday or other celebration by booking a climbing party!This 2 hour session will enable everyone to ‘have-a-go’ at climbing our 10metrewall as well as encouraging and aiding others within the group to reach newheights.Want to hire our function room to compliment your party? Special party price of £16 per hour if booked at the same time as your activity. Fully functioning kitchen, dining area & communal space with table tennis, tablefootball & TV!The room is subject to availability. Indoor Group Climbing Sessions We cater for groups of many different abilities, including those with special needs. Asingle instructor will coach a maximum of 8 climbers to ensure they receive all thetuition they need to achieve. Assembly Presentations We offer FREE assembly presentations on the ‘Challenge of Adventure’ to all schoolsin the Adur District. This stimulating interactive presentation lasts 10-15 mins and isadaptable to all ages.

Outdoor ClimbingThis session is only suitable forstudents aged 10+. We will provide allthe necessary equipment for a daysclimbing on real rock. This day is runwith a high instructor to student ratioof 2 instructors to 8 participants toensure that all students are given thetuition needed to succeed in this moredemanding form of climbing.Experience is not essential butstudents often achieve more if theyhave visited a climbing wall before.Please see our Group Brochure formore details.Group Size: Maximum 8 participantsper 2 InstructorsTimes: By Arrangement (April – Septonly)

HOW TO BOOK:

Contact the Centre to check availability for the chosen session or course. An initial enquirywill be taken. You then have 7 days to send in the individual booking form and payment tosecure your place. (Booking forms can be downloaded from our website, collected from re-ception or emailed). Please refer to the terms and conditions on the booking form for moreinformation. Subject to demand some courses may be increased to a maximum of 16participants.
