“Medieval Times”
n PROGRAM OVERVIEW This program entails a Medieval
Times unit in the focus of Literacy, Social Studies and Writing. This program was written for our 120 second grade students to learn about and experience Medieval Times in a way that was different than exploring a textbook. The program is a unit on Medieval Times to help develop the characteristics of being a responsible citizen and help build an understanding of historical topics that would connect ELA and Social Studies standards. In these lessons, students will be able to describe the connections about historical events from diverse cultures as well as being able to develop an understanding of primary and secondary sources. Students experience history through literature and an up-close and personal adventure at Medieval Times with a tour of the cottages and a feast during the educational presentation.
This program could be easily adapted to other units. Schools could use different books relating to the Middle Ages or other time periods. Also, teachers could adapt the field trip to other paired Magic Tree House Books. (Example: Trip to an aquarium - Pair Books, Dolphins and Sharks with Dolphins at Daybreak, Trip to Dinosaur World - Pair Books Dinosaurs with Dinosaurs Before Dark, Trip to Titanic

n OVERALL VALUE The overall value of this grant is
to help develop the students learning through Literacy and Social Studies. Our students were able to read the Magic Tree House books about Knights and Castles and were then able to experience the readings through our field trip to Medieval Times in Kissimmee.
This grant will fund the books, so that each child can read the books at their own pace and experience the learning through the books on their own as well as at the field trip.
