There are fantastic careers available in the building trades which provide fantastic careers for those who prefer practical work. You can choose to be an apprentice in the wood trades as a site carpenter or a bench joiner which would take you two years to gain an intermediate qualification. Some carpenters then decide to take the advanced option in order to gain more sophisticated skills which would allow them to supervise others on a job site. You may also decide to embark on a career in the plumbing and heating sector with the goal of becoming a gas engineer. There are also options within this sector to gain an advanced qualification as a Renewable Energy Engineer. Some of the busiest people on work sites are skilled plasterers! With a two year Plastering apprenticeship you will learn all the necessary skills to become a top plasterer earning work on building sites. Some people might prefer to work as a painter and decorator apprentice learning about different painting techniques on internal and external surfaces. There is also the very exciting option of a Multi-trade Construction apprenticeship which gives apprentices training in plumbing, carpentry, painting and decorating, plastering and bricklaying. This apprenticeship is highly thought of by organisations conducting regular maintenance of facilities or by construction firms engaged in general buildings' work. If you are looking for a trade that really tests your practical skills and your theoretical knowledge, you should consider a career in Electrical Installation. South Devon College is recognised by OFSTED and our employers as being outstanding for our apprenticeship provision, so you can be sure of the quality of the apprenticeship. Support Our dedicated Apprenticeship Team support employers through every stage of the apprenticeship programme - from recruitment to completion. 90% of the employers we work with rate our support as 'good' or 'excellent' and would recommend our apprenticeship programme to other employers.
