A Portrait of Tracy

Driving Family Values Home

Six years ago, I stood in awe of the fact that God was giving Sheridan House our very own license plate – the Family Values tag. I remember thinking, “How could this even be possible?” Today, I am still in awe over it. Every time I see one on the road, I think I’ll know the driver. I want to honk my horn and give them a “thumbs up!” More often than not, I don’t know the driver and that pumps me up even more! God is so good to us!

This has been an amazing gift … and yes, a miracle. Having the state of Florida issue a license plate where proceeds derived meet the needs of the children and families we serve is incredible.

If you or someone you know doesn’t currently have the Family Values License Plate, now is a great time to get one. The state has recently made switching to a specialty plate available online. Here’s what you need to do:

• Go to: EZTagFL.com • Search under charitable organizations • Click on the Family Values license plate to purchase it

It’s a great way to show your support of Family Values and an easy way to help children and families. Plus it looks great on every color car!

Sheridan House is on a mission. A mission given to us by God. A mission we are armed and ready to complete. A mission to educate parents, strengthen today’s families, and ultimately, encourage our community for Christ. It’s wild to think that a license plate can be a part of the mission, but God gave it to us, and we are going to use it for His glory.

Parenting Today Seminar

“Parenting today is different than parenting yesterday. The world is

different. The issues are different. So, the approach to parenting needs

to be different.” said Dr. Bob Barnes. In an effort to meet the needs

of today’s parents, we are offering a new, live teaching session on

Parenting Today. Sheridan House is committed to educate and

equip parents with practical tools. Our goal is to offer real answers

for real families. The Parenting Today seminar consists of two

four week sessions full of Biblical parenting foundations for today’s

parent in today’s culture.

Whether you are a single parent, a step-parent, or a co-parent, this

series is for you. Some examples of the practical teachings you will

experience are:

So, when house mom, Teri,

discovered a partial self

portrait of Tracy crumbled

up in the back of the van,

she knew it was a learning

experience in the making.

Tracy had the beginning of

something great, but he gave

up too soon.

Tracy is a gifted athlete and a

good student. However, he has

a hot temper at home with his

parents and his siblings. Tracy

often exploded instead of finding

a suitable solution for his feelings

and disappointments. He hates

to lose a game and refuses to back

down from any confrontation.

Challenging the boys to take a risk, trying new ways to

express their emotions, and opting to control their reactions

and impulses can be a very slow process. After years of

bad habits, many boys have a difficult time choosing to

make a heart and mind change while at Sheridan House,

but not this time. Teri sat with Tracy and they finished the

portrait together. They took full advantage of

the wrinkles in the paper from him wanting to

throw it away. She reminded him how giving

up on something that is difficult too soon will

often end up in the trash. Instead, he saw that

working together and asking for help can

make things better, even beautiful.

Tracy smiled shyly as he looked at the

completed self portrait. He was proud of it. He

even allowed it to be displayed in the home’s

study hall for all to see.

Most of the boys in Sheridan House have trouble expressing their emotions appropriately or discussing feelings when things are difficult.

Taking the time to revisit a defeat takes

courage. Attempting to express frustration

in a healthy manner takes determination.

Learning to finish a task, even if it seems

daunting, takes strength of character.

Teri said it best, “I love helping these boys see

that hard work pays off in the end. Even more,

I love watching God soften a calloused heart

changing a dim past into a bright future.”
