Meeting MinutesFinger Lakes Region, SCCA General Membership Meeting Minutes
The SCCA National Convention was held in Las Vegas March 1 - 3. This year the convention was shortened up a bit and things didn’t get started up until 3:00 on Thursday afternoon with the annual meeting and the convention kickoff. We heard that SCCA Inc. was in the black last year and that there is going to be a change to the Runoffs® schedule. There was a survey done last year asking about the schedule of the event. Anyone who has competed at the Runoffs is aware that you need to be there for seven days in order to compete. A decision has been made that the schedule will be changed that you can practice, qualify and compete in four days. The actual schedule has not been worked out yet, so standby for more information.
On Friday I went to the Solo safety seminar and the course design seminar. The first meeting was a discussion on how to make a safe course fun. The design seminar was put together by Roger Johnson. Roger has put on design course seminars before, but this was more than a simple course design seminar, it covered the process of designing a good course and the pitfalls of designing a course just using a map. Dave Ciufo attended a couple of session on RallyCross and he picked up some good ideas that he will pass along to Tony Zanni.
There were several sessions designed for Regional Executives. These sessions were designed to help a region either expand or start up a program. I attended the Club Racing, Solo and RoadRally sessions. There was a lot of discussion from various regions on getting things started and what they do that they think
works. I promised the Glen Region that if they needed help restarting their RoadRally program, we would be glad to help out.
The proposal for a “ t iered” membership kept coming up and was either panned or endorsed. This discussion had started because the board of directors wanted to see if there was a way to keep members who don’t renew because of cost. At this point it is still in discussion phase, but the BoD is discussing offering a couple of different levels depending on what you do in the club. This is still in the extremely early phase and is definitely not a done deal. Unfortunately there was a lot of time spent on this subject; time that might have been better spent on other topics.
Our region was also represented by Eva Ames and MaryAnne Shults. Eva joined the region after competing at a Solo event at RIT when she was there studying mechanical engineering. She found herself enjoying rally and joined the national RoadRally board a couple of years ago. She currently is living in San Francisco, where she is an engineer at Tesla Motors, and remains a member of our region. I found her a great help when I mentioned that we were having problems training rally stewards because we don’t have an instructor in our area. After Tom Langdon completes the paperwork and mails it to Topeka we will have a RoadRally Safety Steward instructor.
MaryAnne attended several different sessions over the two days and was able to write a couple of reports for me. She attended the Registrar’s meeting, the Social Media and the Internet, cost saving alternatives for your Road Rally program and good customer service. She wrote a couple of reports that I hope that Carl can get published in Top End that I’m sure that the membership would find interesting.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that our region was also represented by John Walsh, the Area 10 director.
John was a busy man and I did see him in several different meeting over the weekend. I’m sure that he would be interested in talking about any of the things that went on at the convention.
The Hall of Fame Induction was Saturday night and was very enjoyable. On the most part these are members who I have not heard of, but after hearing their accomplishments I realize that without them our club wouldn’t be where it is today. If you get the chance to watch the video on line it is worth the time.
You don’t want to miss the April meeting. Brian Fallon and John Simonson will present a program on La Carrera Panamericana. Brian ran La Carrera in 2001, 2002 and again in 2003 with Ed Diamond, John Simonson and Alan Costich. I hope to see you there.
Until next month…Mike

moved to Murph’s in Irondequoit. Alan Smith will make sure that the new location is given in the Solo group notices.
The program for the April meeting will be Brian Fallon talking about the La Carrera Panamericana. Fran McAllister will have magazines from that era available to review. Fran noted that local competitors were involved in the early running of this race.
The July meeting will be a picnic at Camp Eastman on Tuesday, July 10. The region’s annual membership recognition will be held at that time. More details to come. A phone call will be made in an effort to have all the honorees present.
Roy Hopkins and Adrienne Hughes will be presenting a program on the Targa Newfoundland at a future meeting. Date TBA.
Speakers are being sought for the membership meetings. Several names have been suggested, suggestion for additional speakers are wanted, along with other suggestions for programs. Contact Mary Hartman at [email protected].
Mike Brunner reported that a raffle was held at the Auto Show for an entry into the Watkins Glen Opening on April 21-22. Rick Albert of Bloomfield was the winner of the raffle. Jake Bucknam’s
candy apple red F-500 Solo car was on exhibit. Jake’s car drew the kids to our booth.
Convention Report – Mike Toombs and John Walsh
Mike Toombs reported that several ideas on gaining or retaining membership came out of the convention. Several of these ideas will be looked at for the Finger Lakes Region. One region has been giving a free entry into an event if they convert a previous weekend membership into full membership. Jeff Colegrove noted that in 2011 we had a number of novices enter one or two Solo events. This plan would take the normal entry fee and put it toward membership.
A tiered membership scheme was also discussed. Membership fees would depend upon level of participation. Lower membership fees could help in retaining social or minimal participation members. Weekend memberships could also be impacted.
John Walsh reported that the SCCA board is behind the effort to simplify the divisional championship rules. A prototype of a revised national race series, the Majors, is being run in the Southwest, Midwest and Rocky Mountain Divisions this year. It will include an invitational series with fewer classes and showcase events. The series will be divided up by zones. The invitationals are to be destination events with the top classes. The result is more track time. The showcase events will be more like the race festivals. The prototype is to determine what the problems will be. The discussion included the reasons and comments from the race drivers present.
NEDiv Roundtable – Mike ToombsThe Roundtable is coming up the
weekend of March 16-17 at Pocono Manor. VP of Member and Region Services Colan Arnold and VP of Club Racing Terry Ozment will be attending to represent the national office. The Roundtable consists of training sessions.
Membership Report – Mike BrunnerMike reported that the region
currently has 409 members, a loss of one since Feb. 7, 2012.
Race Report Mike Toombs and John Walsh
reviewed the change in format to the SCCA National Championship Runoffs®. The schedule will be adjusted so that an entrant will need to only be at the track for four days. Monday will still be a test day. Worker commitments will also be reduced. The current schedule has a test day only at the start of the week.
This is the first step in the process. The SCCA board is looking at further changes. In the future the Runoffs® could be split with half the classes running at one track and the other half at another. Tracks that cannot accommodate the full number of current entrants could be used; again, a shorter week and the possibility of serving both coasts.
Westward Ho!The Westward Ho committee has
met to further plan the event. Promotion includes phone calls, post cards, fliers, etc. A 10% discount for the Fun One will be offered to entrants at this event. The goal is a good race at a minimum cost.
The Westward Ho may be a Great Lakes Division points event next year.
Rally Report – Alan Smith2012 Winter Series
“The Route of All EVO V,” ran on March 3 with 12 cars entered. (The results and an article are printed in the April issue of Top End. Ed.) The rally started at Charlie Riedel’s in Canandaigua, with a break at the Pilot truck stop in Kanona and ended at MacGregor’s in Canandaigua.
There wasn’t very much snow, many were challenging to maintain time. A few were muddy and rutted. The four novice teams stated that they had fun and would come back. It was a good rally and good times, according to Smith.
6 April 2012TOP ENDTOP ENDTOP ENDTOP ENDTOP END
It was noted that one navigator in the “Route of All EVO V” spent a lot of time on her iPhone. The driver commented that the roads were some of the best roads and conditions in the series this year. Additional rally tales were told, including a missed CAS.
STPR®
Alan Smith reviewed the Waste Management Winter Rally. The plan is to run this event for a few years and build it up. We have a three-year contract with Waste Management to use their grounds for the winter rally and for the Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally in June.
There were six entries, three of which suffered mechanical failure on the first stage. The roads were spectacular. Even those that went out commented that they enjoyed the event. The event started at 7 a.m. and wrapped up at 8 p.m.
Waste Management has been very good to work with. Alan reviewed the reasons that they are willing to host our events.
(Results and an article were printed in the March issue of Top End. Ed.)
Solo Report – Jeff ColegroveThe Solo schedule has been set
through August. A June date conflicts with the National Tour at Devens and may be moved. Most of the events will be at the Rochester Institute of Technology, with others at Darien Lake, New York Stage Fairgrounds and Delphi. John Walsh received a call from the Warsaw-Perry airport. A meeting will be set up to meet with the airport staff. The best use of the various sites was reviewed.
Top End – Carl DresieAnyone that would like to read
the digital version of Top End on the region’s website (www.flr-scca.com) and not receive a hard copy should send Carl an e-mail to [email protected] asking that they be dropped from the hardcopy mailing list.
Treasurer’s Report – Elizabeth ThielThe current checking account balance
was reported. The transfer of funds from checking to the Wealth Strategies funds has been made. Two bills just received have yet to be paid.
The new statement from Wealth Strategies is available for review. Financial statements are available for review from Elizabeth.
The financial report was accepted on a motion by Dave Ciufo, seconded by Charles Tanck.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:20 p.m. on a motion by Dave Ciufo, seconded by Elizabeth Thiel.
Respectfully submitted,Carl F. Dresie, Secretary
Bench Racing
John Walsh reported that the turnout for tonight’s meeting at the Burgundy Basin was light. (The rest of us were at Murph’s in Irondequoit!)
As a comment on the proliferation of classes in racing and Solo it was noted
that a “Blue Car (or whatever unique property) Class” would allow everyone to trophy. A few other car clubs use this classing structure.
The video from Targa Newfoundland suggest that if you are going to crash, do it in front of a camera and in someone else’s car.
The Glen Region’s national race weekend is scheduled for three days. The extra time is due to the race being a bonus national featuring FF, FV and F500. The weekend will also include the Trans Am Series.
Central New York Raceway Park is partnering with Ephesus Technologies to develop LCD lighting for the track. The lighting will be more energy efficient and provide a more controlled lighting. CNYRP will also have a booth at the Gater Racing News Motorsports Expo, March 10 and 11.
Booths at the Cleveland Auto Show cost $4500, while Detroit is $60,000. The region gets a corner in the back hallway at the Rochester Auto Show free of charge.

Finger Lakes Region, SCCA Board of Directors Meeting MinutesFebruary 28, 2012
Location: Murph’s Irondequoit Pub, 705 Titus Ave., Irondequoit, NY 14617
Mike Toombs called the meeting to order at 7:50 p.m.
Officers and directors present: Michael Toombs, Regional Executive; Dave Ciufo, Assistant Regional Executive; Carl Dresie, Secretary; Fran McAllister and Charles Tanck, Directors.
Others present: Barb Lissow
Items are presented by subject and may not be in chronological order.
The minutes of the January 31, 2012, board of directors meeting were approved on a motion by Fran McAllister, seconded by Charles Tanck.
Activities Report Barb Lissow reported on the Auto
Show booth. Jake Bucknam’s car is on display. It has been painted candy apple red.
The WGI opening day is April 21 and 22. For $25 a car with any number of people aboard can be driven three laps around the track. This is a charity event for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. A raffle for entry into the opening day track drive is being proposed for the Auto Show.
Fran McAllister reported that Brian Fallon will present a program on La Carrera Panamericana at the April meeting. A date is to be set for Roy Hopkins and Adrienne Hughes to present a program on the Targa Newfoundland.
The membership recognition picnic committee has met to start planning for the July event.
Other ideas for social gatherings are being investigated. A date for an “old members” meeting needs to be set at the next board meeting. A Saturday
afternoon in the summer should allow old cars to be brought out.
New BusinessCharles Tanck proposed that the
election process be started earlier this year. This would allow candidates to present themselves to the general membership. The need for representation by Solo, RoadRally, etc. on the board is a concern. We need to reduce fragmentation within the membership.
Old BusinessThe Roundtable meeting in Pocono
Manor, PA on March 16- 18 will feature training sessions for the different specialties.
Race ReportWestward Ho! 2012 Fran McAllister reported that the
committee met recently. Groupings and schedule were proposed, with a possible 13 sessions. A 10 percent discount for entries into the Fun One is being proposed
The Canadian Formula Vee cars will not be included in the Formula First group due to differences in safety requirements.
Other ideas for promotion suggested included having the event be part of the Great Lakes Division points series. The committee is seeking other ideas for promotion as well as addressing the need for workers.
A flier for the Fun One needs to be generated for distribution at Westward HO!
Rally Report The updated Rally budget will be
e-mailed to the members of the board.
The Wrong Way Home rally had 12 teams entered.
Solo Report The Solo budget was not presented
as Solo Chair Jeff Colegrove was not present.
Solo sites under consideration are Rochester Institute of Technology, New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse and Darien Lake. The Delphi/Henrietta site
needs clarification. Monroe Community College has stated that they do not want speeds in excess of 40 mph. Charles Tanck will contact Xerox.
The Northeast National Tour event has been moved to Fort Devens Field in Ayer, Mass., June 16-17. The Northeast Divisional Championships will be at the Meadowlands in Rutherford, N.J., May 11-13..
Treasurer’s Report Mike Toombs reported the amount
of money in the checking account. The move of money from checking to the Wealth Strategies account was done.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:44 p.m. on a motion by Dave Ciufo, seconded by Charles Tanck.
Respectfully submitted, Carl F. Dresie, Secretary

In 2001 Ed, Brian, John and crew drove a Porsche 356, finishing sixth in the Minor Sport class, 58th overall.
In 2002 and 2003 they moved up to a Porsche 912 (more room and comfort). Finishing 10th in Historic A, 64th overall in 2002 and ninth in Historic A, 62nd overall in 2003.
Come hear Brian, John and crew member Al Costich describe the event and the teams experiences at the region’s April meeting. 8:00 p.m. at Murph’s Irondequoit Pub.

A letter to fellow Finger Lakes Region membersFrom Tom Palmer
After 50+ years of not owning a bike, I purchased one, with thoughts of getting back in shape.
I'm going to try riding the Tour de Cure on Sunday June 10, a fund-raiser for diabetes. If possible, I would like to place the following ad in TOP END looking for sponsors.
WANTED - Sponsors for a 45-year FLR member, Tom Palmer , who will be joining more than 50,000 fellow riders from across the country in this year's Tour de Cure to raise money for the American Diabetes Association. I'm doing the 100km ride (not quite ready for the 100mile yet).
Please go to tour.diabetes.org and click on the big DONATE button. Enter my name on the next screen, and click on the Search button. My name should pop
that, I mean member submitted stories, both club events and other activities of interest to the membership and the casual reader. Showing the enjoyment we have in our activities is one way of gaining membership.
Another aspect of our club that needs expanding is socialization. There is an effort by members of the board to bring into the region the social activities seen in marque clubs. Social gatherings, picnics, meeting programs, etc. can strengthen the region and be a draw for new members.
A new computer graces the editor’s desk. Along with the new hardware there is a need to update the software. As these new capabilities come into play, changes will be occurring in Top End. Suggestions for changes are welcome.

I’M RIDING TO FIGHT DIABETESFrom Cory Kuhns
If you haven’t already heard, I am signed up for the 2012 Rochester Tour de Cure , which is part of a nationwide series of fundraising events for the American Diabetes Association. Over 25 million Americans are living with Diabetes today and their numbers are growing. Diabetes is more deadly than Breast Cancer and AIDS, combined. I have joined thousands of fellow riders from across the country in this effort to raise money to further the mission of the American Diabetes Association: to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all those affected by diabetes.
I am asking for your help. By making a donation on my behalf, you will be helping the American Diabetes Association change the future of diabetes by providing community-based education programs, protect the rights of people with diabetes and fund critical research for a cure.
On June 10th, I will be riding my bike 100 miles . I’m riding to fight diabetes! I have set some personal goals for this event, but I will need your help to achieve the first one. My fundraising goal is $500, and I’m only at about 29% as of this writing. My second goal is for the ride itself. I want to finish the 100 mile course within 6 hours, so when you see me, ask me how my training is going. This won’t be easy to achieve.
I am a member of a team for this event, Team GROC (www.myGROC.com), and my team also has a fundraising goal that I hope to help them achieve. In 2011 Team GROC raised over $15,000
and was the 5th highest fundraising team in Rochester. This year our goal is $25,000. The overall goal for the Rochester event is $850,000.00, and we’ve got a long ways to go. This is where you all come in. Please click http;//main.diabetes.org/site/TR/Events/General?px=7415642&pg=personal&fr_id=8076 to visit my fundraising page and make a donation to support me. Even if you can only give a small amount, it is still a generous donation to a very worthy cause and will be greatly appreciated by the millions of Americans who need your help. Please sponsor me and help me fight diabetes!
Thanks! Cory
Convention ReportIt's not what you say, it's what they hear: 2012 is all about changeBy MaryAnne Curry Shults
In line with issues that mold the times, including the sad state of the economy and high price of fuel and proliferation of social media, the theme of the 2012 SCCA National Convention was all about change.
More than 400 people representing 60 regions attended the convention March 1-3 at South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa in Las Vegas.
"2012 will be a year of change," Jeff Dahnert, SCCA President and CEO said. "The world is changing, technology is changing, and motor sports are changing."
Jerry Wannarka, chairman of the Board of Directors, said membership has slipped, no thanks to the economy.
"No more 'this is the way we've always done it,'" Wannarka said. "Gas prices are no friend; this could be a tough year."

The SCCA members still need the compassion of good customer serviceBy MaryAnne Curry Shults
The Sports Car Club of America may be a membership organization, but looking at it from a business perspective, members are customers. One of the main proponents of running a successful business is a good marketing plan and customer service program.
"Regardless of who we are talking about ," sa id Heyward Wagner, Communications Manager for the Tire Rack® National Solo Program at the national convention, "good customer service is key in bringing participants back."
Showing the data, Wagner explained looking at the numbers helps a region determine a marketing plan to keep members happy and novice participants coming back.
In a survey of 1200 Wagner's data showed:
• Most first learned about autocross from a friend or family.
• Most only compete at a regional level and have been participating in local events for more than 10 years. Most compete in 10+ regional including 2-3 out-of-region events each year.
Digger into the psychographics, which look at attitudes, beliefs and motivations, Heyward discovered 80% described the highly motivating factor to compete was to "have fun with your car," followed by driver development at 65%. Other motivating aspects included socialization.
Competitors opted to not compete or were discouraged from participating for many reasons. The site quality ranked highest, followed by region disorganization and rigidity. More than half the respondents had a bad experience with the region.
Overall, respondents were asked to rate their region as excellent or very good. All scored high, more than 75%, in welcoming newcomers to events and educating new members to Solo. However, the percentages were low relative to retaining new members (45%) and providing opportunities for driver development (44%).
Satisfaction overall showed more than 90% were very satisfied with course design and competition level. Areas needing improvement included communication with members.
Heyward asked, "Why not 100% satisfaction? Why do first-timers never return?" His rhetorical question was answered by another, how do we get better at retaining participants and mentoring new members?
By informal inquiry, Wagner discovered about 16% of first-timers don't return because he or she perceived indifference from the other competitors.
Most novices are shy. Wagner advocates bringing them into the fold and encouraging his or her feedback, even if it's negative.
"Novices won't ask for help," Wagner said. "We have to be pro-active."
Give them a ride with an experienced driver, and assign a mentor. Help them avoid embarrassment.
"New competitors ARE customers, so ask yourself, 'Am I giving our customers value for his or her money," Wagner said. "They chose you today, so be sure they come back."
In the Atlanta Region, a Solo competitor who fades away receives a witty postcard showing several destroyed cones with the tagline, "The cones miss you… we hope you miss them too." On the other side is the region's schedule and contact information.
If a novice shows up for one event, or one season, it's time to find out why they chose not to return. The same is true for someone who suddenly stops participating.
The key is personal follow up. Ask for his or her feedback, even if it's negative. Don't depend on impersonal communication such as email; pick up the phone and call, or arrange to meet face to face.
SCCA may be a membership organization, yet should run like a business. To retain the customer/member, we must not forget that quality customer service and satisfaction is the key to success.
With these factors in mind, the SCCA will initiate some changes to the status quo.
SCCA contracted Kansas City-based Trozzolo Communications Group to provide better branding, public relations, and communications by establishing the four pillars that support the SCCA brand including differentiation, relevance, esteem and knowledge.
"It's not what you say, it's what they hear," Angelo Trozzolo told the crowd.
Within Club Racing, the "Majors" pilot program is being tested this year in several divisions. The concept is to organize specific grouping of events across divisions to spotlight a set of National classes. Nearly 70 percent of competition is in the top-10 classes. The idea is to give those classes better experience and to cluster competition. Other classes will be featured with events such as festivals. If the Majors pilot is successful, it will be instituted throughout the U.S. in 2013.
One of the more significant changes was the announcement that the 2012 SCCA Nat ional Championship Runoffs® would be a four-day event to reduce the time commitment required that may hindered participation in the past.
In an emai l survey sen t to 4,588 Nationally-licensed drivers, approximately 1,500 responded. The data showed 69 percent liked the concept of the four-day event with 688 likely to attend the Runoffs.
With 9,000 new members joining each year, and the same not renewing membership, the SCCA’s goals for 2012 include improving programs and participation and helping regions provide better communications.
“Most important, it’s about having fun,” Dahnert concluded.

Part IIBuilding Your Solo Team: Members to Customers
Presented by Heyward Wagner, Communications Manager for the Tire Rack® National Solo Program
Building your Solo team, board or committee is a crucial part of member retention and good customer service.
"Bringing in 10 to 20 extra people for each event equates to dollar signs if they come back," Wagner said.
Wagner gave the following tips:
1. Build Your Team• Avoid burn out
o Move people around, there will always be those who are more active in leadership roles, so rotate positions occassionally.
• Provide benefitso Offer a discount on entry fees,
extra runs/fun runs, etc.
• Beware of people on power tripso Don't discourage his or her
enthusiam, but if a person's attitude or presentation is detrimental, find a job they can do and still be a valuable asset.
• Consider enthusastic noviceso Not only does this encourage
and nurture a rookie for the long term, it helps the Solo team leader from only asking people he or she knows to be part of the team.
• Scout for your future replacement• Use Google Docs and have each
chief load their list of workers; share the Doc with entire team. This way, worker chief and registration chief know in advance who is working what positions. This saves time and gets competitors out on the coarse faster.
2. Build Your Community• A region that plays together stays
together. This helps break up negative connotations such as the appearance of clicques.
o Hold social activities such as a
post-event barbecue or mid-day luncheon
o Date night (Let others meet the significant other who never comes to events; let the significant other meet your SCCA friends)
o Halloween costume contesto Pool party
• Give out T-shirts with region logo and tagline
o Markets your produce and region/SCCA brand; walking advertisement
o Makes people feel part of the organization/club
• "ROAD TRIP!!"o Go to another region's events
(also works for divisional and national events) and caravan,

share lodging, set up a camping area, etc. Just hang out together.
o Put up banner with region name (better: region name, logo and tagline) on pop-up and encourange others to stop by
• Haven't seen people in a while? Bring them back and find out why they stopped being a part of the community
o Create four-up postcards with schedule, contact information. We b s i t e / s o c i a l m e d i a information, etc. This is also a good idea to send to ALL members because they can tack it on a bulletin board, calendar, or refrigerator and always have the information handy. September and October dates not scheduled yet.
We will be doing something at Delphi in Henrietta, not scheduled yet. We will also host an event at the CNY fairgrounds, date not yet scheduled.
I realize there is a conflict with the National Tour in Devens Ma, and we'll be working to reschedule that event.
Autocross program looking for chief of registration
FLR is looking for a new registration chief for the 2012 season. Following several years of dedicated service to the FLR region, Cory Kuhns is stepping down as chief registrar (thanks Cory!!!).
If you are dependable, computer savvy, and feel you can handle the responsibilities (listed below) please send me an email!
Solo Registrar Responsibilities:Respond to email inquiries related to Solo event registration
and forward emails as needed to other appropriate specialty chiefs/Solo Board/Solo chairman.
Contact event chair to request a copy of the course map for printing on the back of the registration hand out. Prepare the registration handouts with event specific details for each event. Go to FedEx Office and make copies of course maps/hand outs. We have an SCCA corporate discount account at FedEx Office and you must make your copies there.
The registrar is responsible for $250 in cash (Money belongs to the region. I have it now.) to start each event for making change at registration. I normally started each event with all $5 bills. It may be necessary to go to the bank before each event to change larger bills to fives.
The day before each event you must download the entry list file from the registration website. Import this data into axware and prepare an event file. Print two copies of the pre-reg list.
Arrive at the event site 1 hour prior to registration opening. Set up tent and table/chairs. Get out the generator, fill it with gas, start it. Get out waivers/clip boards and weekend membership forms/clip boards.
After closing registration, assign run groups/heats as needed. Transfer event file to timing computer.
Count all money collected and reconcile against entries. Provide the Solo chairman with a detailed report of all cash and checks collected along with entry information including a breakdown of how many members, non-members, juniors, and any discounted entries.

Rally Meeting NotesMarch 13, 201296 Church Street, Victor, NY
These notes are grouped by subject and are not in chronological order.
The following six RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were present; Rick Barnes, Carl Dresie, Ben Gilmore, Jerry Kerwin, Mike Toombs and John Werner.
Interim Rally Chair, Tom Langdon was not present. We wish him all a speedy recovery from his shoulder surgery; the submarine and wiener dog stories were missed by all.
Mike reported that upon completion of the paperwork, Tom Langdon will be a RoadRally safety steward instructor. RallyCross Series
The Feb. 19 RallyCross at Perry’s Park was held to three runs due to field conditions. Ben reported that the front wheel drive cars were getting stuck, along with a few of the all-wheel drive cars. The finish line was moved along with the “pit” area due to field conditions.
There are no RallyCross events currently scheduled. Winter Rally Series
We had a successful Winter Rally Series, although the last three events had only 12 entries each. The first rally, The Long Way Home, had 19 entries. Because it was part of the WINTR series, there were several out of area competitors entered. The second rally, The Ithaca Winter Rally, had 15 cars entered.
Rick reported that he did not have to pull anyone out of a ditch of tow any cars. The lack of any significant snow on any of the rallies may be a contributing factor.
The one competitor to drop out did so during the Ithaca Winter Rally, due to tire trouble. Grass under the bead can lead to failure to hold air pressure.
Several issues became apparent during the running of the series that need review. A set of suggestions for rallymasters should be created. Points to be considered are: a.) Extending the out time for the early cars so that the C speed competitors do not fall far behind the A speed cars, b.) Use of CAS 45 or transit times on major roads, again allowing cars to stay close, c.) The use of “pause over a distance” to lower the speed of all cars on roads where rally speeds would be unsafe., d.) Checkpoint locations should have the GPS coordinates included.
Car l wi l l co l lec t and ed i t suggestions for review prior to the 2013 Winter Rally Series.
Using C speed leg times to calculate the first out time would add up to two minutes to the typical three minutes. Failure to consider the C speed leg times has led to the Novice competitors arriving at the break after their desired out time.
The same speed used for transit zones or the same time would lower the leg time of the C speed cars compared to the A speed cars. Again, keeping the cars closer together. A speed included in the instructions for a transit time and explaining the concept to the novices.
The “pause over distance” instruction would prevent the use of all cars change average speed to the same value.
These “rules” need to be part of the rally pre-check.
Reducing the time between the first and last cars will reduce the time the checkpoint needs to be open. That reduced time is a benefit to the checkpoint crews.

The Route of All Evo V ReportKarl Haltiner, Rallymaster
Dr. Evo here to provide the report on the March 3, 2012 rally “Route of all Evo V”. It was an utter and total disaster. Yes, I know that overall the rally went well, all the cars returned, and the competitors said they had a good time and enjoyed the route. But, Dr. Evo is not pleased because they did not suffer as he thinks they should! I tried to convince the rallymaster to make them go rally speed down Vogt Road, but he felt sorry for them and put in a 30 second pause. Dr. Evo also said to put the checkpoints at the bottom of some of those nasty downhills, but again the rallymaster did not take heed (I am thinking he no longer deserves an Evo, but should instead drive an Impreza!). Imagine Dr. Evo’s displeasure that Alan Smith almost had a total score in the single digits – aarrgggh, but at least Dr. Evo can smile a little knowing that Alan had to take a 0.5 time allowance on the infamous Crow’s Nest Rd to achieve that low score.
Dr. Evo was feeling optimistic the night before the rally. It was raining as the rallymaster did the course check – his car was tossed about by the mud ruts as he fought to keep A speed times in places, the visibility was poor, and his stand-in navigator lost his cookies, twice (Dr. Evo arranged to have Mac, his regular navigator, sent to Texas on a month long work assignment). Buh-ha-hah, if it keeps raining it will be even better for the rally, or if it freezes fast, there will be ice and frozen ruts everywhere – truly nasty and
Several things can be done to help the checkpoint crews. Mike suggested that the packet for each checkpoint include a score card with the fields where the times are to be recorded marked. The use of the correct place could also help in scoring, especially if checkpoints are missed by a competitor. Pictures showing where the checkpoint is located and where the crew should park should also be included. GPS coordinates are also a big help in location checkpoints. Sometimes finding a bit of red tape on a tree is difficult, especially at night or when the tape is missing.
Checkpoint crew training should include the use of the clocks and how to set up the flash box.
T h e c o m p e t i t o r s s h o u l d b e encouraged to record their in time at the checkpoints. That information can be helpful in sorting out local traffic, both at the checkpoint and at radio controls.
(Results for The Wrong Way Home and The Route of All EVO are printed in this issue of Top End. Rallymaster articles are also printed. Ed.)
We need to think about a training rally for the 2013 season. Options range from a two stage rally with a mid-rally training session to a more documented event along the lines of The Wrong Way Home. That style of rally could also be used as the last event of the season.
Summer Rally SeriesRick has been looking at putting
a winter style event on during the summer. Evening start locations are a problem. Format and scheduling need to be considered. Proposals for early events need to be ready for the April rally meeting.
John suggested that we write a string map rally as a summer event.
Promotion of any summer series events was discussed. Do we promote to other car clubs or those who gather at the Log Cabin? Who do we promote to and who is our audience? Attendance at the summer series events has varied from one to 16.
Miscellaneous Discussions Rick Barnes requested that access to a
parking spot in front of the garage be left open for his new tenant.
Missing an instruction, especially a reduce CAS NRI can results in early arrival at a checkpoint.
If a reduce CAS by a given amount at each occurrence of a landmark, what happens when there are two landmarks at the same point? Do you reverse at the delta CAS?
If you miss a route instruction during a Winter Series Rally and wind up back on course with little or no change in the mileage, is the rally a Winter Series event or a trap rally?
Dave Ciufo has a clock that he is willing to give to the rally effort.
The use of transponders would require a significant expenditure for computers. The use of pneumatic timing line equipment can be a problem if a snowplow passes while the checkpoint is setup.
Blocks that can be used to align the flash boxes should be part of each checkpoint crew’s equipment.
The current calendar, with the Solo dates included will be sent to those present, to help in scheduling future rallies.
“Rock Man” is a means of putting a stop and go in the middle of a stage.
The process of run-work could be used if checkpoint crews become a problem.
The Glen region is looking at restarting their rally program. Mike offered our assistance to this effort.
John reported that switchbacks in the Alps can get boring.
Limiting the movement of the right shoulder can impact inserting and operating the ignition key.
Jerry did not have a submarine story, but did offer the obligatory wiener dog story. Playing tug of war with a 50 pound wiener dog can result in a pulled back muscle.
Membership fees are reduced if you work a club race. Food and beer tasting are not recognized worker specialties.

the rallyists will suffer, as they should to build character! But no, Princess STi, the goddess of goodness, smiled upon the rallyists and the roads were dry and actually fun to drive, with only a couple of areas with snow flurries to hint at what might have been.
However, Dr. Evo was pleased to see that the team of Gary Thomas and John Kastenhuber worked very hard, with 22 points total, to keep Alan Smith and Eric Hobron honest with their measly 12 points. There was much rumoring that Alan’s generosity in doing the scoring may not have been so generous and may have contributed to that low score, but Dr. Evo knows his heart and that he is deserving of driving a Subaru – he is truly generous. Dr. Evo also applauds the team of George Modlin and Shaun Hallam for their win in Limited and that their good score of 112 was earned without the benefit of time allowance’s! Kudos’ also to the team of Lee McElhinny & Jim Perrin for their win in Stock, but Dr. Evo frowns upon the Novice team of Pat Smith & Jesse Luce for their meager 112 points – they are no longer worthy of being called Novices and will be punished next year! Dr. Evo is very pleased with the performance of the other (true) novices – they persevered and did well in the face of adversity and will surely be honored in the days to come.
Now, Dr. Evo must take pause and give the highest honor to those selfless individuals who contribute to the greater good for the enjoyment of others, the control crews: Roy Hopkins & Adrienne Hughes, Tom & Deb Langdon, Carl Dresie (who also did the safety check and agreed to some of Dr Evo’s demands) and Barb Lissow, Alan Blood and crew, Larry Wells and Paul Walker, Bob VanSice (also drove the course by himself!), Chris and Jake Bucknam (straight from work to control 7!), and the more-than-generous Marnie Soom & Cory Kuhns who also did registration and tech. Special recognition must also go to Jeff Hoyt who provided right seat ballast for the rallymaster and assistance in covering for late control crews (even standing by the checkpoint sign timing cars while the rallymaster searched for the misplaced crew) – and did not lose his cookies!!
So, what to do for Evo VI – likely to be scheduled in ’14? Perhaps the rallymaster could run this route in the opposite direction – yes, YES, that would be diabolical, a rally truly worthy of the Evo name! and a little snow, or even mud, would help…..

The Wrong Way Home Results
The Wrong Way HomeFebruary 18, 2012
Parents or other authority figures would tell us that the route to take home was the shortest, using the best roads, the well-worn route. But as enthusiasts of the driving experience we would often strike out into unknown territory, taking what others would say was the “Wrong Way Home.”
On the evening of Saturday, Feb. 18, twelve teams set out to drive that wrong way. They were assisted by six teams that recorded their travels at various spots along the way. Instead of driving the unpaved roads through the hills south of Rochester the roads chosen were all most all paved to the east. This route took them through northern Ontario and Seneca counties and back through southern Wayne county.
The weather at the start continued to be the low thirties with cloud cover that western New York has been “blessed with” during the winter of 2012. Roads
were dry and requested speeds were easy to maintain. BUT as we approached the mid-point Old Man Winter showed us what he could do. For about ten minutes visibility was reduced to maybe 30 ft. at times. With that showing he relented and gave us a clear view of the sometimes-wet roads. (I still marvel that some of the teams maintained rally speed during the whiteout!)
Those roads started out straight and boring for the driver, then late in the first half and start of the second half became more twisted, ending with more straight and boring. With almost all of the intersections along the route having a tulip and distance given, the navigator need not be bored.
Even with the challenges the roads presented, many teams had single digit scores on most of the 13 legs. Overall and equipped class winners were Alan Smith and Eric Hobron. Limited winners were Karl Haltiner and Mac McCann. Stock class was taken by Jamie Hayslip and Gretchen Kriesen. The sole novice team of Ramon Gonzalez and Gregory Viscomi placed tenth overall.
The Wrong Way Home could not have been pulled off without the help of a number of volunteers. Thanks to Pamela Peterson and Ben Gilmore for registration and helping with scoring; Alan Smith for tech inspection and scoring; Tom and Deb Langdon for setting the clocks and working two check points; Mike Toombs and Elizabeth Thiel for manning three check points and John Walsh, Danny Thiel, Chris Bucknam, Lew Giesy, Dean and Meridith Croucher and Barbara Lissow for working two checkpoints. Carl F. Dresie, Rallymaster
