Are tomatoes a fruit?
The benefit of a category isn't to denigrate something or
someone. It's to help us make better decisions with limited
information.
If we put someone in the category of, "frequent business trav-
eler," we can apply previous learnings about what people like
this might want or need.
Categories are useful tools when they help us find shared
worldviews and interests. They're ineffective when they are
nothing but surface labels, labels that don't help us serve.
Use categories well and you seem like a well-prepared min-
dreader, able to provide what people need, sometimes be-
fore they even realize it. It means you can treat patients, lead
employees and delight customers on a regular basis.
Use them with laziness or ill intent, and you dehumanize the
very people you ought to be serving.

Creating Effective Career Strategies Professional Development Meeting
Claremont, California was the site of the 2015 APICS West
Coast Student Case Competition. Two teams of University of
Houston Bauer MBA students raised funds and participated
in the event. 84 students from 14 different schools compet-
ed for undergraduate and graduate division prizes and ulti-
mately the distinction to represent APICS Southwest District
at the 2015 APICS International Conference and Student
Case Competition.
Bauer Teams included Yanfei Yin, Yang Zhou, Brandon Wal-
lace, Kunwar Singh, Salem Nseir, Yenlik Abiyeva, Yi-Chun
Hsieh, Geetika Gakhar, Vainatha Polasani, and Chris Moore.
This year’s competition was quite different from past events.
The students were presented with a cross functional business
simulation called “The Fresh Connection”. They took on the
roles as VP Sales, VP Operations, VP Supply Chain Manage-
ment and VP Purchasing and were charged with ‘rescuing’ the
business from its current financial situation – negative ROI.
The teams analyzed the current conditions of this producer of
fruit juices, suffering severe losses over the past year and
poor supply chain performance. The team goal was to make
the company profitable again by making strategic and tactical
decisions over multiple ‘rounds’ each six months long. After 4
decision rounds each team made an 8 minute presentation to
the Board of Directors explaining strategy, results and future
plans.
The Bauer teams performed well and significantly improved
their companies financial and supply chain performance.
They didn’t earn top honors but came away with a better un-
derstanding of the importance of collaboration amongst busi-
ness functions to drive continued supply chain and financial
success.
Three Bauer MBA teams and one undergraduate team look
forward to participating in the Terra Grande District Student
Case Competition April 17th and 18th and the opportunity to
network with other APICS student teams and supply chain
professionals.

After completing my CSCP courses, I
received a promotion at Jetstream of
Houston, LLP., a subsidiary of Federal
Signal Corporation. I am currently the
Purchasing Manager. My new role, Project
Manager has a very broad scope;
“Responsible for the overall direction,
coordination, implementation, execution,
control and completion of specific projects
ensuring consistency with company
strategy, commitment and goals.” I feel completing CSCP was a big
factor in getting this position. I used what I learned in class to
gradually implement some of the processes identified in the course.
I believe it gave me confidence to communicate with upper
management and a greater ability to demonstrate necessary
changes.
I am very excited to be the first person in my company to hold this
new position. Our leadership team developed the position and has
pretty big expectations. I am counting on my CSCP training to help
me achieve the objectives and be “Responsible for ensuring
successful, profitable, and timely completion of projects as it relates
to our P&A (parts and accessories) segment.”

Opportunity? New Job? Promotion?
After using my Mechanical Engineering
degree to work in valve manufacturing for
five years, and earning my MBA, I made a
career decision to move into Supply Chain.
I obtained the APICS CPIM certification a
few weeks ago. My company provided CPIM
classes at our facilities to help obtain the
CPIM within 1 year. With my APICS
certification and my previous engineering experience, I recently
landed a management position that combines both fields – my
responsibility is to design our products for manufacturability.
Needless to say, my company knew the value of obtaining this
training and certification, and I can say for myself, having this
training and certification has helped me tremendously with
knowledge in my current role and any future supply chain role.
