The candidates agree that the economic situ-ation is one of the big-gest issues facing Van-couver Island North but, of course, they don’t agree on the solu-tions.

Or even how to describe the problem.

GREENS

Sue Moen of the Green Party believes the solution lies in tak-ing the economy out of the hands of large cor-porations and encour-a g i n g s m a l l - s c a l e entrepreneurship.

“I believe in re-local-izing the economy to keep sustainable green jobs and keep the money home,” Moen said. “We don’t need a lot of huge industry.

“Bring the economy back to the smaller scale so that there a r e m o r e p e o p l e employed.”

The Green Party is focusing on small-scale economic enterprises that are more sustain-able and efficient in the long run. Moen said there are jobs to be created in energy conservation.

“In energy efficiency there are jobs to cre-ate those efficiencies and in conserving that energy,” she said. “Once we’re there, we switch over (to alter-native technologies) to replace the old fuels.”

Examples of alter-native energy produc-tion include the tidal energy that the City of Campbell River is studying.

“I am very curious and I am watching

what they are doing with the tidal energy up there in Campbell River,” Moen said.

There are also oppor-tunities in geothermal energy and solar and wind power genera-tion.

Moen agreed that it might surprise people that the Green Party has an economic pol-icy focused on job cre-ation.

“They may find it unusual but we’ve always thought that way,” she said. “(It’s) focused within the limits of our environ-ment. That’s where we differ (from the other parties) significantly.”

LIBERALS

Liberal candidate Mike Holland said economic recovery begins with a balanced federal budget. The Conservatives have not been good fiscal managers despite their reputation as such.

He said the federal Conservatives have been cutting taxes for corporations and increasing spending.

There’s also 30,000 more people working for the federal govern-ment now than when Prime Minister Ste-phen Harper came to power.

“Canadians have watched the Conserva-tives run the economy into the ground,” Hol-land said. They turned a decade of surpluses into deficits.

“People forget what a great (economic) inher-itance that Stephen Harper got,” Holland said. “The debt was paid down...the econ-omy was thriving.”

The economy over-laps with a lot of things, Holland said, but jobs are the focus and in the North Island, jobs are hard to find.

“It’s kind of tough right up to Port Hardy and Campbell River,” he said. “You can walk downtown in Camp-bell River and (see) all the boarded up (busi-nesses).”

But despite that, he said Campbell River is “doing great, consider-ing that the pulp mill closed.”

The Conservatives

did nothing to help Campbell River’s situ-ation, Holland said.

“When the mill in Campbell River went down, Stephen Harper said it was a great buy-ing opportunity,” he said.

But most workers at the mill “just wanted to pay their mort-gages,” not invest in a pulp mill. Even with the resource industries rebounding, he said, you’re still not going to see the amount of jobs that there used to be in the past.

“With the change in technology in the for-ests and in mining, it’s not realistic to expect them to employ more people than when they did in the past,” Hol-land said.

Job creation oppor-tunities lie in food production and in improving the energy grid with solar and wind power. Increase food production and increase revenues for farmers, Holland said.

“Why haven’t ranch-ers’ and far mers’ incomes shot up” even though the population

of the world is increas-ing, Holland asked.

Meanwhile, Canada needs to invest in green jobs like the United States is doing, he said.

Even established industries, like coal p r o d u c t i o n a n d fish farming can be expanded, as long as they are done with the appropriate envi-ronmental protection included, Holland said.

“But it has to be based on science,” he said.

NEW DEMOCRATS

N D P c a n d i d a t e Ronna-Rae Leonard said Vancouver Island North’s biggest eco-nomic issue is the same one facing all Canadi-ans – affordability.

“There’s a lot of

communities that are struggling and a lot of people who are strug-gling,” she said.

North Island commu-nities have seen mill closures and jobs dis-appear and many have had to leave the region to find employment.

That compounds the problem of the high cost of health care, the lack of seniors care beds, expensive drug costs, high cost of home heating fuel and, on top of that, the HST. The defeated Conser-vative budget did noth-ing to alleviate any of those costs.

“That’s exactly what people are looking for – affordability,” Leonard said.

Seniors, in particu-lar, are finding the cost of living difficult, she

said.“The government’s

budget was going to be providing more for seniors but it was really a slap in the face of the people who built this country,” Leonard said.

The NDP will intro-duce measures like a pharmacare program and raise the Canada Pension Plan “so that people can afford to be retired,” she said.

CONSERVATIVES

For incumbent Con-servative MP John Duncan, the economy is always the biggest issue.

“It’s always the econ-omy,” he said. “People are looking around the globe and looking in their own backyard and everybody’s con-cerned about the fra-gility of the economy.”

Canada is doing

“extremely well,” he said but our neighbour to the south is experi-encing much grief so our good results can’t be taken for granted.

Duncan is anticipat-ing a rebound in the forestry sector but in the North Island in particular, there’s been a lot of restructuring over the last couple of years, having a huge impact on the riding.

“The Catalyst Mill and the Elk Falls saw-mill were huge losses,” he said. “Many of these people are work-ing but many of those people aren’t working in the riding. We have to recognize that and we have to have more investment in Vancou-ver Island North.”

The best route to acquiring that invest-ment, Duncan said, is to having a majority Conservative federal government and free enterprise-oriented

provincial gover n-ment.

Give the Conserva-tives the majority they seek and efforts to sup-port Canadian forestry producers will con-tinue. Joint federal/provincial efforts that secured increasing access to China for for-est products will grow. That has kept 10 mills in B.C. going, Duncan said.

In the riding, the fed-eral government put money into the Neucel mill in Port Alice to match the black liquor subsidy the AMerican government is giving their forest products.

Meanwhile, in Camp-

bell River, the federal Conservatives have support intiatives to develop infrastructure in Campbell River like the highway and the airport as well as the cruise ship terminal.

“We put a lot of money into the quality of life in the Campbell River area,” Duncan said.

That has spin offs into a growing trend towards people work-ing from their Camp-bell River homes for companies headquar-tered elsewhere.

“They have chosen to live in Campbell River because it’s a good place,” he said.

The Campbell River Indian Band is stream-lining its taxation rules to help spur more development and home building.

“There’s no new taxes,” promised Band councillor Jason Price. “The changes will make it more appeal-ing for development. That’s the main goal.”

Currently, band mem-bers who own homes on reserve lands, as well as businesses which lease property, pay property taxes under an Indian Act bylaw. But the bylaw doesn’t provide enough accountability, said Price, and that’s why the band is mov-ing towards the First Nations Fiscal and Statistical Manage-ment Act.

“Bylaws can be changed by different councils, but under the new model, everything

is accountable,” said Price.

It will also give the band better leverage to obtain financing for large-scale infrastruc-ture, such as business development and resi-dential subdivisions.

And band members want to build new homes on the reserve land. There are about 100 members on wait-ing list to build, but there are just four resi-dential lots left.

“A lot more want to come back (to the reserve) but there’s no where to come back to,” said Price.

The band planned to build homes on the 35 acres it owns by the river, behind Home Depot. However, the land is unsuitable for residential devel-opment, said Price, due to high levels of naturally-occurring copper in the soil. Last month, the band bought 200 acres near

Quinsam Crossing, beside the Cape Mudge Indian Band reserve. The Campbell River Band is now in the pro-cess of trying to get that property out of the Agricultural Land Reserve and reclassi-fied as First Nations reserve land. Also, on June 3-4, members of the Campbell River Band will vote on a new land management act giving council more more power to enact and enforce bylaws.

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Campbell River was recently named one of the top 10 worst places to live in Canada by MoneySense magazine – but Mayor Charlie Cornfield isn’t buying it.

“Tell people when they’re sitting in Tyee boats down at the spit (Dick Murphy Park) and the people that go down there to watch them, that this is a crappy place,” said Cornfield. “People choose to live in places that suit them for a variety of reasons.

“We who choose to live here – there’s a rea-son.”

But our spectacular ocean views and long lists of recreational opportunities obviously did not impress the writers at MoneySense financial magazine, who studied 180 communities across the country with populations of over 10,000.

I almost always check the price of gasoline when I pull onto the highway headed for work each day. An increase in the numbers usually brings a groan and starts me thinking about how to use less. The way I drive my little truck can have a signifi cant infl uence on how much fuel it uses. Everyone knows that the faster you go, the more fuel your vehicle uses. In general, the sweet spot seems to end at 90 km/h and climbs rapidly from there. So, cruising at 90 if the limit allows will make more effi cient use of that fuel if you keep your speed steady at that rate. To further increase effi ciency, accelerate and decelerate smoothly and conservatively. To do this, you will have to watch the traffi c around you and anticipate the traffi c lights if there are any. Maintaining an adequate following distance will allow you to adjust as necessary without heavy braking. Finally, keep your tires properly infl ated and in good condition. Low infl ation pressure by only 5 to 7 psi can cost you 10% in fuel consumption. Hmm, doesn’t this sound like a defensive driving lesson if you leave out the bit about fuel? Imagine, saving money and driving more safely. Sounds good to me! The author is a retired constable with many years of traffi c enforcement experience. Campbell River was ranked 175 out of 180 cities, with affordable housing singled out as the city’s biggest chal-lenge.

MoneySense said the community is try-ing to rebuild itself as a home for retirees “but high unemploy-ment and low average

household income are stubborn obstacles to prosperity.”

According to the magazine, average real estate prices are higher than average at $336,000. Cornfield said if you’re look-ing to buy a home, it’s still cheaper to buy in Campbell River than in cities like Vancouver,

Toronto and Ottawa. He also noted the num-ber of real estate sales in Campbell River did not drop as much as in neighbouring commu-nities last year.

As for having an economy in transition due to the loss of Cata-lyst mill, Cornfield said it makes you realize the potential for other

industries the commu-nity may have not oth-erwise looked at.

“The community isn’t going to dry up and go away,” said Cornfield, who noted all of the city’s recent accom-plishments including winning a national award for the green roof on City Hall; being named Solar Commu-

nity of the Year; and being awarded the first tidal energy project in the province.

“I’ve lived and worked over a lot of places in the province and I’ll match Campbell River with anyone,” said Cornfield.

“But I guess I can breathe a sigh of relief that not everyone

wants to live here or we wouldn’t have the room.”

MoneySense ranked the city’s weather as 128th; crime as 148th; and access to health care as 113th.

Population growth was the area where Campbell River had the highest ranking at 69th.

KRISTEN DOUGLASCAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

In just its first year as a solar community, Campbell River has been recognized as one of the province’s greatest users of solar power.

The city was named the 2010 Solar Power Community of the Year, an honour Campbell River will share with Fort Saint John and North Van-couver.

“It was a really good piece of recognition for the city and it says a lot about what we’re doing to reduce our carbon footprint,” said Peter Woods, chair of the Envi-ronmental Advisory Committee, which made the recommen-dation to council to become a solar com-munity last year.

In March 2010, Camp-bell River became one of 32 solar communi-ties across B.C. and

was awarded $50,000 in grants from both the provincial and federal governments to assist with solar panel installations.

Since then, solar panels have gone up on the Fire Hall down-town, RCMP station, the Sportsplex and the new lift station on Highway 19A. All those buildings are using solar energy to heat their water sup-plies.

The city also part-nered with school district 72 to help fundraise for the installation of a solar hot water system at Timberline Second-ary School.

The city was named Solar Power Com-munity of the Year in recognition of its leadership in using solar technology in those five municipal buildings. The award was presented to the city last Wednesday at a ceremony held

in the T’sou-ke First Nation community in Sooke.

“Being named a solar community of the year is a great honour for Campbell River,” said Mayor Charlie Cornfield. “Our goal is to be an inspiration for other B.C. communities and to demonstrate that solar power is a viable renewable energy source – even in our coastal, often rainy, climate.”

Because the energy comes from the sun’s light, not its heat, it’s possible to use the solar panels even on a cloudy day.

Amber Zirnheldt, the city’s sustainabil-ity manager, said to promote solar power generation to hom-eowners, displays will be put up at the city facilities already using solar panels to illustrate how the system works. Dur-ing Solar Days (likely

to be held in May) people can tour one of the city facilities to check out the solar panel.

Zirnheldt said the city’s aim in becoming a solar community is to reduce greenhouse emissions for its part in the Climate Action Charter, a provincial initiative by which nearly 200 munici-pal gover nments, including Campbell River, are committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2012. It also falls in line with the city’s green strategy to reduce greenhouse emissions.

“We want to look at green power options in order to reduce our carbon footprint,” said Zirnheldt. “Solar power is an alterna-tive to using gas for heating and is a great way to reduce emis-sions.”

The city also uses solar-powered cross-walks at 12 different

locations across the city, including on Dogwood and Alder streets as well as on Highway 19A. Two radar recorders, used to track traffic volume on Dogwood, are also solar-powered.

Zirnheldt said solar panels are also being considered for the Community Centre, Centennial Pool and possibly City Hall.

As the acrimonious machinations of federal Parlia-ment spun inevitably into Canada’s third national elec-tion campaign in five years, most voters just shrugged

their shoulders.Wearied by years of recession and

recovery, higher fuel prices, a yo-yoing dollar, escalating international con-flicts and maybe even Charlie Sheen’s ranting, they just want the politicians to do their jobs.

The politicians are quick to blame each other for the $300 million expense of another election that is as likely as not to end up with the very same or similar result as the previous two minority

Conservative governments. In British Columbia, voters face the daunting pros-

pect of as many as three trips to the polls this year—the federal election, municipal elections in November and a possible provincial election if new premier Christy Clark makes good on her pledge to seek an early mandate. We’ll even have a mail-in referendum on the HST in June.

The people of Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Tunisia, Bahrain and any number of dictatorial states feeling the stir-rings of democracy should have such problems.

As we whine about campaign signs being erected on public boulevards, or vitriolic attack ads cluttering our TV viewing, Egyptians are still trying to figure out

what their successful ouster of their president means to their country and Libyans trying to free themselves from the murderous 42-year reign of Muammar Gad-dafi are dodging bullets.

For most voters election campaigns are a series of contrived photo opportunities and divisive rhetoric, a test of endurance rather than a celebration of democ-racy. It’s easy to get cynical about our parliamentary system when it’s all we know. Every time we get the chance to vote, we are given the opportunity to enact change. No international sanctions or no-fly zones required. It’s worth thinking about that when we pon-der whether to tune out this federal election.

MP embarks on campaign number...can you guess?

We say: It’s easy to get cynical about our democracy

Good point: TourismThis is in reply to our Mayor Charlie Cornfield on

the front page of the March 30 edition of the Campbell River Mirror.

Once again we see him beating that dead horse inregards to Campbell River being the Salmon Capitalof the World. I know many of us have experiencedthe great fishing of Port Alberni, Port Hardy, HaidaGwaii, Prince Rupert and locations of Alaska wherethey deserve that title of being the Salmon Capital ofthe World.

I know he is trying to increase visitation to our city, and I commend him for his efforts, but he must doas many Campbell River businesses have done anddiversify. Case in point being the tour boat industry ofour city. Many boats conduct water taxi service, griz-zly bear tours, whale watching excursions, fish farmtours and some also conduct sport fishing charters. This type of diversity generates business from a broadrange of clients, thus increasing your business. If a12-passenger boat solely relied on one product, such aswhale watching and tried to sustain their operationsin this competitive field, they would more than likelyfail.

Campbell River tends to be a washroom stop on twoIsland highways between destination centers suchas Telegraph Cove, Port Hardy, Tofino, Nanaimo, and Victoria. Many of the businesses in our city relyupon people coming to spend some time utilizing the

Political double speak, eh?You ask a politician for a straight-

forward answer and they’ll try des-perately to weave their party plat-form into their response. Weave? Some aren’t even that subtle. They veer off into a nebulous debate about an entirely different topic.

All I wanted to know was what was the biggest issue facing Vancouver Island North? Sometimes I got a direct answer but in all cases it was considered an invitation to talk about what they wanted to talk about.

Sure it was about the economy but somehow the economy was con-nected to...you name it: tidal power, pharmacare, ranching.

Meanwhile, John Duncan hit me with a skill-testing question: how many election campaigns was this

for him? These days I’m in a “just last week...or was it two years ago” frame of mind when it comes to remember-ing things. I said four.

It’s been seven election campaigns for the long-serving MP: '93, '97, '01, '04, '6, '08 and now 2011.

It began with the Reform Party’s explosion onto the scene and then morphed in the Reform-Progressive Conservative merger.

Editor’s note: the inclusion of this walk down memory lane can in no way be construed as an endorsement or a lack of endorsement of the afore-mentioned politician. Or politicians in general. Or specifically. Nor should this editor’s note be seen as a condem-nation or support for editor’s notes as a concept or journalistic practice. Practising journalism is an inher-

ently dangerous sport and this paper in no way encourages or discourages any young person from indulging in journalistic tendencies. Seek proper professional help. If you plan to prac-tice journalism, you need proper pro-fessional help.

And now for something com-pletely different...

How about them Whitecaps, eh?Been keen to see the re-emergence

of “top-flight” soccer in Vancouver. I was a big fan of the NASL Whitecaps and have kept an eye on the team as it went through various lower level leagues to emerge into Major League Soccer. I attended the Soccer Bowl when Vancouver hosted in 1983 (the last one). The Whitecaps had been eliminated and weren’t in the game between the Toronto Blizzard and

Tulsa Roughnecks. My favourite moment was when the bored B.C. Place fans began the “White! Caps!” chant that alternated from either side of the stadium, which I see the current crop of Whitecaps fans have revived in the temporary Empire Field.

The ‘Caps have put on a good show so far, although Wednesday’s game against New England was an embar-rassing display of incompetent refer-eeing. But other than that, the fans have created great atmosphere and the team has played well. I particu-larly like how the soccer minds in Whitecaps management have proven they know more about the game than all the North American writers who predicted the Caps would struggle to score in the MLS. Imagine.

products and services available during their vacations that we have to offer. Our ultimate goal is to become a destination sought by many throughout the world, as is the case with Tofino.

Flogging that dead horse by trying to make us the Salmon Capital of the World is not going to achieve this on its own in this day and age. We need to emphasize that Camp-bell River is the South-ern Gateway to the Orca Realm of John-ston Strait. We need to let the world know that we are the doorway to the southern reaches of The Great Bear Rain Forest. I believe if we have a Salmon Festival that puts emphasis on the grizzly bears and orcas, coupled with the rich aboriginal cultural component, we will attract more people to come here. As far as I am concerned,

marketing our city as being the Salmon Capi-tal of the World is false advertising, and if you do this in the tourism industry it will haunt you with dissatisfied customers, where word of mouth shall decrease one’s book-ings in the future. One must also keep in mind that times have changed where Bubba and the boys going fishing have changed to where the females of the household are now deciding how the vacation dollars are going to be spent – and they want unique expe-riences over fish.

I know one thing for sure, if I want excep-tional salmon fishing for Tyees, I am off the Moutcha Bay at the end of August. So if Char-lie and others want to see our city become the Salmon Capital of the World, well maybe you should be speaking to the First Nations about getting Ocean Ranch-

ing going in the Camp-bell and Quinsam River systems. When the waters surround-ing our city and at the mouth of the Camp-bell River are team-ing with thousands of Tyees, as was the case long ago, then we will be in the running for being The Salmon Capital Of the World. Until then, let us edu-cate the world on just how unique Campbell River is with the other regional draws that we are the gateway to.

Tourism: Goal is to become a destination

Here is the situation: as I drive through Camp-bell River, I notice there are a lot more electric scooters on the road.

It seems that a majority of them are not aware of their surroundings therefore making it more dangerous for us automobile drivers.

My question is: 1) are there currently laws in place for the

scooter drivers. I see a lot of scooters driving aimlessly down the road and even on sidewalks waiting for an accident to happen.

2) are the scooters to used on the road or on the sidewalk

3) they should be made more visible to automo-bile drivers

ICBC recognizes Campbell River and area vol-

unteers for helping make B.C. roads safer as part of National Volunteer Week, April 10-16.

In recognition of National Volunteer Week, ICBC is thank-ing Campbell River, Sayward, Quadra Island and Gold River volunteers for their continued support in making our commu-nities safer through road safety programs including Speed Watch, Lock Out Auto Crime and the Stolen Auto Recovery pro-gram.

“Volunteers make a difference in com-munities right across the province,” said Shirley Bond, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. “National

Volunteer Week gives us the opportunity to express our apprecia-tion for all the great work that takes place because volunteers care passionately about their communi-ties. Nearly 50 road safety volunteers and eight community policing offices and police detachments in Campbell River and the surrounding area are focused on ensur-ing our communities are safer. Thank you to each volunteer who makes these impor-tant initiatives pos-sible. You are making a difference.”

“The extraordi-nary dedication to road safety shown by these volunteers and community policing offices is remarkable and truly appreci-ated,” said Jon Schu-bert, ICBC’s president

and CEO. “On behalf of all our customers and ICBC employees, thank you!”

In 2010, Speed Watch volunteers in Campbell River and the surrounding area contributed over 340 hours to help reduce speed-related crashes in their communities. With the support of volunteers, speed-related crashes have steadily decreased in B.C. over the last five years. Volun-teers use radar and speed-reader boards supplied by ICBC to show drivers how fast they’re actually travel-ing. Research shows that it works – over 70 per cent of drivers traveling 10km/h over the speed limit slow down when they see a speed-reader board.

In 2010, Lock Out Auto Crime volun-teers in Campbell River and the sur-rounding area handed out over 400 notices to drivers to draw atten-tion to the risk of auto theft. Volunteers place notices resembling parking tickets on the windshields of vehicles, many with garage door openers or valuables in sight, offering the owners common sense tips for

preventing auto theft.These volunteers

also operate the Sto-len Auto Recovery program in Campbell River and the sur-rounding area, and in 2010, they scanned over 9,000 licence plates to help identify stolen vehicles. Each year, volunteers help to recover hundreds of stolen vehicles in B.C.

“These volunteers work tirelessly,” said Caroline Robinson, local ICBC road safety coordinator. “Many give up their Friday evenings to go out on a cold, rainy night to try to locate stolen vehicles or spend their afternoon scan-ning busy parking lots for unsecured vehicles to help pro-tect owners from becoming a victim of auto crime. With their support, we’ve seen an astounding 65 per cent decrease in auto crime in B.C. since 2003.”

Drop by your neigh-bourhood community policing office to see how you can get involved and help keep your community safe.

There’s no time like the pres-ent to bring

the topsy-turvy world of Gilbert and Sul-livan back to the stage in Campbell River.

“I really think that musical theatre has had a renaissance and that’s because of shows like Glee and High School Musical,” says Heather Gordon, the director of An Evening of Fun with Gilbert and Sullivan which plays at the Tidemark Theatre on Saturday.

While musical the-atre is being brought to new audiences, Campbell River’s long-standing company Shoreline Musical Theatre Society hopes to introduce them to the genre’s long and storied past. And what better material to entertain both new audiences and old than that of legendary English songsters Gil-bert and Sullivan.

“Musical theatre is very cool right now all across the board,” says Gordon. “I think Gilbert and Sullivan is the epitome of musi-cal theatre.”

Gilbert and Sullivan

is rollicking, humor-ous, often cheeky and outright fun. But it is also great music that allows the human voice to soar. Shore-line has brought the world’s great musicals to Campbell River such as Gilbert and Sullivan classics The Mikado and The Pirates of Penzance as well as other audi-ence favorites such as Fiddler on the Roof. After a short hiatus,

Shoreline is back with a Gilbert and Sullivan review that will head a night of fun.

Gordon is pleased to be bringing a new Shoreline production to the stage because everybody needs good musical theatre.

“I really think that musical theatre has to have a home in every town,” Gordon says.

This event will be a fundraiser for Shore-line so that the home

of musical theatre in Campbell River can continue to entertain.

The evening begins with appetizers and drinks at 7:30, followed by the show starting at 8:15, and ending with dessert and cof-fee at 9:15. There will be a raffle featuring six exciting prizes. Audience members are encouraged to dress in Gilbert and Sullivan costumes if they like – pirates,

sailors, Victorian era dresses – that kind of thing. There will be prizes for the two best costumes. Tickets are $25 and available at the Tidemark.

One Million Milestone within ReachWith the Campbell River Community Foundation’s annual golf tournament fast approaching excitement is building that this will be the event that marks a major milestone. For the last five years the generosity of the golfers and sponsors has made the event the largest fundraiser for the Foundation. This year the tournament is anticipated to tip the Foundation over a huge milestone, its first million dollars in endowed funds.

The Foundation’s HistoryGetting to a million however started much further back then the tournament. The Foundation’s history is a story of dedication and vision starting over 20 years ago by a few very committed citizens. In 1990, Mayor Robert Ostler and Council were notified of a meeting that was to take place in Ottawa. It hosted by the Ottawa Community Foundation with funding coming from three other existing foundations in Canada, Vancouver, Winnipeg and Toronto. Then Councillor Mary Ashley attended that meeting as a guest of the Vancouver Foundation to learn more. Upon her return she expressed her legendary enthusiasm for this concept in our community. With unprecedented support coming from existing foundations and seed money from Council the new Campbell River Community Foundation was emerging. It would be another seven years before our community foundation would receive status as a registered charity. During those early years, Mary did double duty, as a Board member for the newly formed Community Foundations of Canada and volunteer working towards our foundation. Joining Mary in the early development of the foundation were Mayor Ostler, Irene Ross, Judge Tony Sarich, Dr. Bob Gordon and Bill Halstead. They oversaw the creation of a non-profit society that eventually received charitable status. One of the first major donations was a legacy from the Western Premiers’ Conference held in Campbell River in 1994. That legacy provides annual funding to children in our community still to this day.

What is the Community Foundation? The Campbell River Community Foundation is like a permanent ‘treasure chest’ for charitable needs in our area. Money donated to the Foundation is held in trust permanently. It is the income from those donations that is given out each year to registered non-profits. The distributed income called grants goes to projects that have the wide and important impact on the citizens and community. The Foundation’s vision is to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Campbell River. It does that by staying aware of the changing community needs then offering grants to meet the wide variety of projects and programs. Who gives to the Foundation? Money donated is often given by families or organizations with strong ties to Campbell River who have a desire to build a more sustainable community. The Foundation is thought of as a responsible choice by donors. Those that give get peace of mind knowing that their donation will never be spent yet their generosity lives on. The Foundation receives one time donations as well as regular contributions. Some donations are made to established funds named for the individual, families or organizations that started them. Those funds can choose to direct their income to specific causes such as the environment or children’s needs if desired.

Who has Benefited? Forty different non-profits have benefitted from the Foundation grants over the years. In 2010, six charities received funding totalling $19,000. They are as follows: • Campbell River Volunteer Society received funds to hold a workshop on grant writing and volunteer recruitment • Greenways Land Trust received $12,000 to complete a bridge over Willow Creek on the Jubilee trail • North Island Dragon Boat Society was granted funds for hold a membership drive and to purchase new equipment • Campbell River Search and Rescue Society received money to train members in swift water rescue • Quadra Salmon Enhancement Eco-centre Education Outreach was funded for a school program and summer interpreter • Campbell River Environmental Committee funded the annual Oceans Day with almost $2000 grantThis year, the Foundation is eagerly anticipating the next round of applications for their grants so they can once again distribute income to local non-profits.

One Million and BeyondThis is the year the Campbell River Community Foundation reaches six figures, too. It is the year they pass another milestone, granting more than $100,000 to the community non-profits. Over the years the funds have grown which means each year even more income is earned thus more funds are distributed. With a dedicated working Board and Executive Director, the Foundation is developing a two year strategic plan. Their new website launches soon with new features such as a photo gallery and news updates. In the future, it will offer the option of online donations. And yes, Mary Ashley a founding member is still with the Foundation. With great enthusiasm the current Board welcomed her back. She continues to provide valuable insight to guide the Foundation towards its first and subsequent millions. To learn more about the Campbell River Community Foundation visit the website www.crfoundation.ca.

The sushi went real fast. That’s not surprising.

Campbell River loves its sushi and the community also showed its love for Japan as more than 325 people came out to support Tuesday’s fundraiser for earthquake and tsunami relief efforts.

“Get in there quick, there’s

a lot of great food!” hollered City Coun. Andy Adams after tucking into his share of the feast at the Commu-nity Centre.

Organized by the Camp-bell River Multicultural and Immigration Services Soci-ety (MISA), the smorgasbord featured fresh and delicious

ethnic dishes from India, Laos, Thai, China, Italy, Philippines, Canada and, of course, Japan.

And after everyone left stuffed and satisfied, they had raised $7,934 for disaster relief efforts.

“It is wonderful how many community members and

businesses came forward wanting to help, both finan-cially and by volunteering,” said Jorge Little of MISA. “Everyone just seemed very happy to contribute and share lunch. There were overwhelming amount of requests to do it again in the future.”

PAUL RUDANCAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

No, there’s not a sale on red hats today. Those ladies you see sporting the fancy cha-

peaus are members of the Red Hat Society and 160 of them are taking over the Anchor Inn for a weekend “funvention.”

“Women are coming from Vancouver, the Lower Mainland and all over Vancouver Island,” says Red Hatter Marja Roxborough.

Roxborough and Tina Vienneau belong to the Scarlet Divas, one of five Red Hat chapters right here in Campbell River. According to the happy Hatters, four of the chapter were instrumental in organizing this weekend’s event.

The Hatters are dubbing this the “Fantasy Cruise” and are holding a Hawaiian night and Mardi Gras.

“It’s going to be fun and we’re sold out,” says Vinneau.

The Red Hat Society is open to women age 50 and over, and the real goal, is fun says the group’s “Queen Mother” Sue Ellen Cooper.

“The Red Hat Society began as a result of a few women deciding to greet middle age with verve, humour and elan. We believe silliness is the comedy relief of life, and since we are all in it together, we might as well join red-gloved hands and go for the gusto together,” Cooper writes on www.redhatsociety.com.

“Underneath the frivolity, we share a bond of affection, forged by common life experiences and a genuine enthusiasm for wherever life takes us next.”

The Campbell River Senior Peer Counsel-ling program has been running for more than four years, supporting seniors in our commu-nity.

They are in need of volunteers, seniors aged 55 and older, who are willing to take a four-day train-ing course and then devote approximately

one hour a week visit-ing a senior who needs emotional support, and attend two monthly meetings on a variety of interesting educa-tional topics. Volun-

teers find the work meaningful and edu-cational. Training will be happening in May. Men and women who are interested in vol-unteering are invited

to call Carol at 250-287-3044 for an interview or e-mail [email protected]

Do you know any-one who is over 55 and who may be having

trouble dealing with challenges, such as loneliness, depression, or bereavement? A Senior Peer Counsel-lor is a senior who is trained as a volunteer

to provide support and guidance. This service is free and all informa-tion is kept confiden-tial. This program is for men and women. Call 250-287-3044.

This annual event brings local residents together with Royal LePage realtors to raise much-needed funds and awareness to help break the cycle of violence in their communities. All revenue generated by the garage sale goes to support Campbell River’s local women’s shelter, Ann Elmore Transition House, and fund long-term solutions to end family violence.

The garage sale will be held at 2580 Rainbow Road (off Woodburn ).

1X2JUST GAS

2Students at Ocean Grove Elementary got out of class early on Wednesday afternoon follow-ing a gas line break.

Everyone was safely evacuated and students were back in school on Thursday.

According to information posted on the school district’s website, a work crew was preparing the ground for a new portable class-room when the natural gas line was hit.

They had apparently forgotten the cardinal rule of excavation: Call before you dig.

Work on New Simms Creek Pump Station completed ahead of schedule, under budget

The City of Campbell

River achieved another significant milestone on the Old Island HIghway (Highway 19A) upgrade project last week with the completion of the new lift station, named the Simms Creek Pump Station.

The city issued a

certificate of completion to contractor Ketza Pacific Construction 1993 Ltd. for the completion of the new lift station on March 29, 2011.

This contract, which involved the replacement of the sanitary lift station and the construction of the new pump station, was completed ahead of schedule.

The original deadline for completion was March 31.

The City received an extension on this project from provincial and

federal funders allowing the completion date to be extended to Oct. 31, and was still able to achieve the original completion goal date of March 31 for this portion of the project.

This portion of the project is projected to be completed with the final cost being approximately five per cent under the approved budget.

“This is a significant achievement and an important upgrade to our infrastructure,” said Mayor Charlie Cornfield.

Richard BarriaultApril 26, 1966–April 6, 2011

It is with heavy hearts and sadness we, the family, announce the sudden passing of our beloved Richard. He was predeceased by his father Raymond Barriault. He is survived by his mother Marie, sister Joeanne (Ken) Delcasino,

brothers Roger (Lisa) Barriault, Raymond (Sheila) Barriault, nephew Tejay Delcasino, nieces Ashly Delcasino, Kayla Barriault and a close friend and companion who was special to Richard, Dona Shannon. Richard was born in Campbell River, graduated from Carihi where he had many friends. Richard followed his father’s foot steps and worked out in the woods until he was unable to work due to an injury. He then obtained his Class 1 driver’s licence and started to drive truck for Dave Rennie until his death. Richard was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fi sh. His favourite time fi shing was for trout with his partner Skylar Gordon who Richard loved deeply. Richard was very good at pulling wrenches on his old beat up trucks for he had to be if he wanted them to run. He was adored and loved by many life long friends. Richard will be sorrily missed by all, for he touched so many hearts with his kindness. If you so desire, donations to a charity of your choice.Service to be held at Sutton’s Funeral Chapel, Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 10:00 a.m.Au revoir Au Ciel.

Thirty-six female hockey players from the Island attended the U18 zone camps in Port Alberni April 2-3.

It was at this camp that two Campbell River athletes were selected after evalu-ation of their fitness and skill off and on the ice. Scotia Belle-vance and Taryn Ash-down were selected and will attend the U18’s tournament in Salmon Arm from April 27 to May 1.

T h e 2 0 p l aye r s selected at the Alberni camp will join others that were selected from five other camps across B.C. All of the players will be put onto six equal teams, based on the player’s

rankings.The top 51 players

from Salmon Arm will advance to the provincial camp to be held May 19-23, at

a location yet to be determined.

There are many stages in the pro-cess, but the eventual goal is to make Team

BC which competes nationally.

Bellevance, 15, has had many successes during her hockey career in the North Island.

This past season she was part of the North Island Extreme with fellow Riverites Una Marsh, Danielle Thompson and Briana Forberg. The team placed third at the provincial champion-ships.

Ashdown, 16, is mak-ing her second attempt to make it onto Team BC. Last year she made the third stage of the tryouts.

Ashdown is now in Grade 11 at Notre Dame, the prestigious hockey school in Sas-katchewan.

The Crush U14 Chaos had their first look at the top teams in the province last weekend playing in the 34-team Superspike in Burn-aby.

Ranked 18th, the Campbell River girls fought through the

backend of the draw needing to win their pool to advance to the Tier 1 playoffs. The girls dominated pool play with straight set wins over Ridge Mead-ows (25-14, 25-21), West Vancouver (25-13, 25-10) and Focus Fury from

Surrey (25-20, 25-20).Crush then faced

a tough cross-over playoff game against sixth-ranked North Vancouver. The girls caught North Van by surprise as they came out fighting with some hard serving and excel-lent passing.

“The girls passed everything without a single error against a

strong serving team,” said coach Jacquie Chase.

Kaitlyn Falk and Kaitlyn Herbert led the way with almost perfect passing. North Van took the first set 25-23, but Campbell River came back to take the second 25-18 and the deciding set 15-8 to advance to the quarter-finals against Sunshine Coast.

But Chaos had a shaking start and were down 17-2 and went on to lose the first set 25-14. The second set was back and forth with the teams tied 22-22. That’s when Sun-shine Coast took con-trol and won 25-22, and then went on to win the gold medal match.

In the game for fifth place, Campbell River knocked off Vernon in straight sets.
