GROW! Far ibault Enters i ts 11th YearThe Faribault Area Chamber ofCommerce is a charter member of

the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce's Grow Minnesota! program. This program recognizes

that while some job growth occurs through relocation into Minnesota communities, the overwhelming majority of job growth occurs when businesses already here choose to grow and expand locally. Grow Minnesota's local partners, your Chamber included, visit local businessesto identify challenges that we can help correct so that when businesses areready to expand, the best choice is right here in Minnesota. A strong businessretention strategy is the best way to grow jobs and the tax base.

Grow Faribault, a business retention and expansion program, is a cooperative effort between the Faribault Area Chamber of Commerce, FaribaultEDA, the City of Faribault and the Faribault Industrial Corporation. Our local program completed over 400 visits since the program began in 2002.

The GROW Faribault Committee welcomes new participants to assist invisiting businesses and invites anyone tosuggest or request a visit.

From the President

Our Chamber is a member of a Federationof Chambers that speaks out on legislativeissues. Our board reviews and approvesthe issues and positions as they develop. The Minnesota Chamber is a tremendousresource to us, proving legislative webinars, conference calls and issue updates. We are all working extra hard

this session to defend the business priorities. Here are excerpts from Mn Chamber President david olson’scolumn dated March 25:•the Governor’s budget proposed spending increases outpacesthe growth of the Minnesota economy by 2 1/2 times.•the Governor’s commitment to create a fourth tier in personalincome taxes is a direct hit on the small businesses and entrepreneurs that flow business income through personal income taxes. •the Governor wants to increase the top rate to 9.85 percent, which will impact 21,000 of Minnesota’s most successful businesses. •You’ll be paying higher insurance premiums to fundthe new health insurance exchange, regardless ofwhether you participate in the exchange.•You better brace for an increase in the state’s minimum wage; some proposals make the wagehigher than the national rate.

•You could face higher street improvement utility fees (read:higher property taxes) under a bill that allows taxing for streetimprovements.•You could be paying more taxes for transit under a highermetro sales tax. Another proposal creates transit tax districts foradditional assessments.•the bottom line equals additional costs for small businesses.Lumped together, the wallop is significant and gives businessdecision-makers serious pause whether to locate or expandtheir operations in Minnesota. Our message is clear: We cannot afford to spend more than incoming revenues. Minnesota’s economy is growing about 2percent, and the Governor wants to spend at an 8-percent pace.that is unsustainable without raising taxes year after year onhardworking taxpayers. State Government must start spendingmore effectively and efficiently. Our Faribault Area Chamber board agrees – Let us know howthese issues affect YOUR business so we can increase the volume of our message!Contact area legislators and let YOUR VOICE be heard!

The Faribault Main Street crew ofvolunteers have been busy this year– and they are about to get busier. When Bruce Burkhartzmeyer took thehelm as the Board of Directors Chair inJanuary, he brought an ambitious plan thatwe should have a Main Street volunteervisit all of our members – an Every MemberVisit. So far, I have a list of 162 businesses insideour Main Street boundaries and 18 businesses just outside of our area. That it istruly an ambitious task. But we’re up to itand the purpose of the visits is three-fold.First, we want to make sure that everyone is aware of what the Faribault Main Street program does forDowntown Faribault – Every businessand building owner within our boundaries is a member of our team –whether they know it or not. Andeveryone is invited to take part in ourefforts to strengthen the very neighborhood that produces theirlivelihood. We want business owners, managers, employees and buildingowners to understand that we are allin this together, and as a group, we aremuch stronger and viable than we areas individuals.Secondly, we want to learn more aboutour members. What products and servicesthey offer. What changes have they maderecently and what changes are they planning to make in the future. How havethey effectively marketed their businessand what can we learn from them aboutwhat hasn’t worked. What businesses orproduct lines would complement theirs? And most important, what can MainStreet do to assist their efforts atstrengthening our area.

The third purpose of theEvery Member Visit is toform a grass roots donorsupport program. We arein our third year as a designated Minnesota

Main Street communityand our volunteers haveworked very hard in

establishing a solid base. We hope to garner enough funds from a donorsupport program to solidify the program to the point that we can startmaking tangible investments backinto our area. We have taken on thetask of making sure flower baskets lineour streets in the summer, but we also recognize that we need holiday decorations, we could use new streetbanners, and we all would benefitfrom bigger and more effective festivals and advertising promotions.Building owners have the City of Faribault micro-loan program to improve their facades and we wouldlike to offer a complimentary grant program to really give our buildings ashot in the arm. Together, all of theseefforts will make our businessesstronger, our property values improve, and all of Downtown Faribault morevibrant.Coming Attractions!Last August, we held our first everFaribault Main Street Mystery Entertainment Crawl and it was ahuge success. The next Crawl is onSaturday, May 18th. Who or what actsof entertainment will you enjoy? Youwill just have to wait and see. Put it onyour calendar.Bikes, Bikes, and Brews – On Saturday, May 25th, there will be anew event in downtown Faribault. Inthe morning there will be a motorcycle ride, and a road bicycleride. Around noon enjoy live entertainment and craft brew tasting. Watch for more informationsoon.
