March promises to be a busy month. Look for progress reports on March 5. Also, Juniors will be taking the ACT on March 5. Testing
will begin at 8:00 and conclude at approximately 12:45. Our Freshman Academy students will participate in a UNC-Charlotte STEM
presentation on March 6. Students will have an opportunity to view STEM projects and gain valuable information on STEM
careers. Benchmark Testing will begin on March 11 and conclude with CTE midterms on March 22. Benchmark tests and mid-terms are
one tool teachers use to assess student mastery of the concepts that have been taught. This month we will also begin registration for
the 2013-2014 school year. Guidance counselors will meet with classes (11th, 10th, 9th) to discuss course selections and graduation
requirements. Students will then be given registration forms to bring home and discuss course selections. Guidance will schedule
individual conferences with each student (10-15 minutes) to discuss course selections.
We are pleased to offer tutorial services to students on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:50 -3:30. Any student needing assistance is
welcome to remain after school for help. Transportation will not be provided.
This month we will also welcome a new assistant principal to our staff. Mr. Overcash retired on February 28 and Mr. Williams will be
joining us. We are looking forward to having him on staff.
As always, student attendance is a priority. Students should be present unless they have a valid reason for missing school. Students
missing more than eight (8) days of school, are in danger of failing the course(s) for the semester. Contact the school if you have
questions about our Attendance Policy.
Thanks for your support,
Karen S. Nixon

On Feb. 27, Albemarle High School
had 27 students attend the CIAA
Education Day at the Time Warner Cable
Arena. The Central Intercollegiate Athletic
Association consists mostly of historical
black colleges and universities. Students
were given the
opportunity to speak to college

to colleges/ scholarships, and
enjoyed watching a college
basketball game at the arena.
Recently, our Exceptional Children's Self-Contained Autism and Life Skills Classrooms were
visited by some educational professionals from Japan. The Japanese visitors were in North Carolina to learn more about Autism and find out how they can replicate services in there country. They visited several
sights in North Carolina including TEACCH Centers in
Charlotte and Chapel Hill as well as GHA, Autism Supports
Residences and Day Programs and our EC/Au and EC/Life Skills classrooms at Albemarle High
School.
