Ardenwald Elementary School May 2018 All-Star News A message from the Principal… Dear Ardenwald Families, All Ardenwald staff are All-Stars. Each day they endeavor to create a positive learning environment for each student. Teachers, nurses, administrators, secretaries, instructional assistants, our social work intern, student teachers, our counselor, instructional coach, school psychologist, custodians, cooks, daycare staff, bus drivers – all play an essential role in the education and well-being of our students. In an effort to create a stronger community, we have combined all Staff Appreciation weeks this year. EVERY staff member of Ardenwald will be celebrated during the week of May 7-11. As I walked about school today, I observed students eagerly engaged in our community and in learning. In the morning, our custodian, the cooks, and cafeteria staff provided breakfast in a clean and friendly environment. In the library, children were at the edge of their seats intensely listening to a story. In kindergarten, students were focused on listening to their classmate’s ideas. The courtyard was alive with activity with older students in a lunchtime conversation with their teacher. In a classroom, students were sitting in circles discussing different ways to solve a math problem. In another classroom, students were questioning the meaning of a story. In the field in front of the school recess supervisors and 3rd graders were playing an enthusiastic game of kickball. Teachers were having quiet hallway conversations to figure out how to support students. In the office, temperatures were taken, pick-up plans modified, and lunch money collected. At the end of the day, bus drivers warmly greeted each student. It sounded like and looked like the music and art of school. Normal sounds, normal sights that I was glad to see and hear. They are evidence of the combined effort of our entire staff. I hope you have an opportunity to celebrate our staff the week of May 7-11. Have a wonderful May! May 2018 All-Star News

Atentamente, Dr. Karon Webster, Directora

May 2018 Dear Parent or Guardian of student bus riders: Our goal each day is to transport all student bus riders safely to and from school. On Wednesday, June 13, all student bus stop information from this year will be saved for the 2018-19 school year. This is consistent with what we did last year. For the 2018-19 school year we are only accepting online Transportation Requests. Links can be found on each school’s website under the Parent menu and also on the Transportation Department’s website located under the Transportation Requests by School form link. A new request must be completed and turned in for processing by Friday August 17, 2018 . This is necessary ONLY if your student:

● Is new to the District ● Moved to a new residence ● Needs a different alternate stop

Only one alternate address within the school’s attendance area is accepted . If you need assistance filling out the online request please visit your school office. A few reminders when filling out the request online:

● Complete all required areas, as indicated by a red asterisk ● Enter school name/current address/and student information ● Enter alternate address ● Indicate AM (before school), PM (after school), or Both ● Indicate which days of the week ● Electronically sign and submit the form as soon as possible. Initial routes will be established

August 2, 2018. These may change and updates will be posted accordingly. Routes will be finalized for school start up on Friday August 17, 2018 .

● Transportation requests received after August 17th will be processed 3 weeks after the 1st day of school. Until that time, students may use an existing nearby stop.

We want to make sure the school has the correct address where your child will be picked up and dropped off on the first day of school. If you have questions about bus service or the online Transportation Request please contact your school office or our Transportation Department at 503.353.6150. Respectfully, Ryan Hahn Director of Transportation

TURN IN TO SCHOOL BY

6/6/18

How many times did you walk, bike, skate/scooter, or bus?

Dear Parents, Thanks so much for helping with the Walk+Roll Challenge this year! This year’s challenge is for the whole month of May in celebration of National Bike Month. Our goal is to encourage as many students as possible to increase their physical activity in May by using active transportation modes like walking, biking, scooting, skating, etc. Here’s how you can help! Attached is a scorecard for you and/or your child to track daily how they got to school by circling the corresponding mode. Save the scorecard and turn it in to your teacher or the office by Wednesday, June 6th to be entered in the PTO’s Walk+Roll Challenge raffle! Winners will be announced on the PTO website and Facebook page and prizes will be delivered to students before the last day of school. Please consider using active transportation one or 20 times this month, help your child fill in the scorecard, and give a few encouraging words every now and then! Resources and tips:

x See The Street Trust’s website for tips on how to use active transportation for fun, health and safety: https://www.thestreettrust.org/parents-teachers/

x Lost your scorecard? No problem! Download another one from the PTO website: http://www.ardenwaldpto.com/

x Can’t walk or bike to school, but you can walk or bike other places? Count it! x Don’t forget, May 9th is National Bike to School Day! We heard the bike fairy may pay a

visit to our school that day. Thanks again for helping encourage healthy habits in our school community! We couldn’t do it without you. Sincerely, Ardenwald PTO www.ardenwaldpto.com [email protected]
