Be prepared for that ‘difcult’ discussioPEOPLE in Wales find havingdifficult conversations tougher atwork than at home, according tonew research.
The research conducted by theChartered Management Insti-tute shows their top three trickyconversation topics are all work-related.
Residents of Wales find it hard-est to talk about negative feedbackon work performance (36 per cent)followed by pay (28 per cent) andthen tackling a colleague’s inap-propriate behaviour (26 per cent).
This compares with personaltopics like relationship break ups(18 per cent), money (14 per cent)and sex (13 per cent), which thepublic feels are less hard to tackle.
The workplace is not only thesetting for people’s most difficultconversations, it’s also where they
happen most frequ ently.More than two in five of work-
ers in Wales (42 per cent) saidthey have to deal with a difficultconversation at work at least oncea month or more.
Despite the regularity of awk-ward workplace exchanges CMI’ssurvey found employees and toomany managers don’t have copingstrategies. During difficult con-versations at work almost half of respondents (49 per cent) said theymumble, stutter or trip over theirwords, while 41 per cent clam up,and 37 per cent let emotions takeover from facts. Fifty-three percent admitted taking things toopersonally during these exchang-es.
The emotional upheaval of dif-ficult conversations also takes itstoll on workers in Wales.
The data shows that knowing a
difficult conversation is com-ing makes nearly two thirds of respondents (65 per cent) feelstressed or anxious. Eleven percent said they slept badly or hadnightmares in the lead up to atricky work conversation. Yet,despite the impact of these awk-ward discussions on leaders andthe workforce, 85 per cent of thosesurveyed have never had anytraining at all on how to tackle dif-ficult conversations at work.
Paul Thomas of CMI’s Walesboard, said: “Our survey findingsreveal that difficult conversa-tions are really taking their tollon workers. When it comes to ourhome life we often rely on friendsand family to support us withtricky discussions. At work, withno advice or training, it can feellike tiptoeing through a mine-
field. It’s no wonder 59 per cent of people in Wales told us they wouldlike to learn how to manage work-place conversations with moreconfidence.
“At CMI we want to help theUK’s workforce to feel calm and incontrol. That’s important whetheryou’re negotiating a pay rise withyour boss, or talking to a colleagueabout their performance not hit-ting the mark. Managers are thelynchpin of so many businessesthat they are often at the centreof these discussions. And, it’s not just the most junior or newestmanagers we want to help. This isan issue that cuts across all areasand all levels of business.”
The data reveal that seniormanagers find difficult conversa-tions especially hard to handle.Forty per cent of senior managersadmitted they have panicked and
told a lie when facedwith a tricky conversa-tion, and 43 per centowned up to losing theirtemper and shouting.
The survey also lookedat the main reasons whypeople are so reluctantto tackle difficult con-versations at work.
Fear of not being ableto get a point acrossclearly (28 per cent) andconcerns around gettingupset or emotional (26per cent) both rankedhighly. With barri erssuch as this, 57 per centof respondents in Walesagreed that they woulddo almost anything toavoid having a difficultconversation. Incredibly,
almost half (46 per cent)of workers have put upwith a negative situa-tion at work rather thantackle a conversationabout it.
Paul Thomas said: “It’sscandalous that so manypeople would rather bemiserable at work thanface a difficult conversation. Thisreluctance to talk things throughnot only has a negative impact onindividuals, but can quickly affectwider team morale. That’s whyCMI is here to help. Our top tipsare easy to remember using themnemonic TALK:l T – Think about framing how
you think about the conversationdifferently. Don’t label it as “dif-ficult”. It may be about a trickysubject, but, by suggesting solu-tions or alternatives you can focus
on constructive outcomes;lA – Always use clear, simple
and neutral language. Refer tospecific examples and facts ;l L – Listen to what the other
person is saying and hear theirpoint of view. Show you careabout how they see things;l K – Keep the focus on the is-
sue, not the person.“By remembering to “TALK”
everyone can have more con-structive conversations at work, whether you’re the boss, or abrand new manager.”
