Your weekly paper with news, views & interviews. Since 90/91. 21st season

Colmis track makers struggle to take loose the equipment that got stuck in the water and snow slush. Note the hole in the ice, to the left of the wheels.

Ice Tracks Delayed due to Warm WeatherThe ice track makers are having prob-lems getting the tracks ready for testing this season. Winter started off badly with temperatures in November and December about ten degrees warmer than normal. And on top of that, there was a lot of snow, a nightmare situation for ice track makers.

Everyone agrees that the conditions this season are the worst ever, in the history of car testing in this region. Th e ice tracks will be ready for use more than one month later than usual.

When it snows on top of thin ice, two things happen. Th e ice stops growing thicker and the water of the lake is pressed up onto the top of the ice. Th e snow insulates the lake water from the cold and the lake does not freeze as easily.

To solve this problem, the track makers pack the snow to break its insulating properties. Mix water and snow, you get ice.

Th ere is not much else they can do, except wait for cold weather and hope that it doesn’t snow for a month or so.

To help illustrate this article Colmis track makers, Hans-Erik Burman, Mikael Gyllen-berg and Fredrik Jakobsson agreed to pack some snow for the camera. Unintentionally, they provided a realistic picture of the problems they frequently encounter.

When Mikael Gyllenberg drove out onto a track where they had been working three days previously, he immediately got stuck

in the snow and water slush. Th ey also discovered that there was a hole in the ice, big enough for a person to fall through.

Harald Fjellström said that Colmis have no usable ice track at the moment but they have prepared all their land tracks so their customers are able to do some testing. Th ese are not enough but everyone understands that this is a reality they have to face.

At BOSCH in Vaitoudden, things are a little better. Lars Holmgren, Arjeplog Test Management, said they have managed to open two tracks on the lake and hope to open more soon. Usually they try to open

the ice tracks before Christmas, but this year it was not possible. He also confi rmed that there are functional ice tracks in Slagnäs.

Alf Sundström, Cartest is hoping that they can open at least some of the ice tracks in a week or two. Th e situation is terrible for them and for their customers, but they are doing whatever they can.

Th is situation also causes economic problems as nobody is prepared to pay for an ice track that does not exist. Alf said that they have to work many more hours and more people have to be hired to pack the snow and prepare the tracks.

Th ree to fi ve snow mobiles drive side by side thousands of kilometres to pack the snow, so the ice can get thick enough to make the tracks.

This & That...• Grave economic cutbacks are facing the people of Arjeplog. Th e municipal economy is in very bad shape and the politicians are struggling to reduce the budget for 2012 by about 17 million SEK in order to balance the economy.

Mayor Britta Flinkfeldt Jansson agrees that it is going to be tough and says they are trying fi rst to cut ”hard” costs such as buildings and roads. However, she confi rms that they will probably have to make cuts within the areas of education and medical care, as well as care for the aged. Jobs will be lost and many people are concerned about these cut-backs.

Th e amount of money that has to be saved is equivalent to ten percent of the whole economy and from January this year, the municipal income tax has also been raised in an attempt to balance the defi cit.

• Stig Holmgren, owner of Arctic Track in Arvidsjaur went through the ice with his truck while he was preparing tracks on Lake Arvidsjaur before Christmas. His body has not yet been recovered.

Even though Stig had prepared tracks for more than 20 years and had a lot of experience his truck went through the ice and disappeared into the water. His death came as a great shock for all the people in the business as well as friends and family. He was 64 years old and a very popular person

• A local woman, Laila Bergström started a Facebook group about the old days in Arjeplog. In just a few days there were more than 1000 members. Most of the comments are in the form of, do you remember this person or that shop.

Many old pictures have also been posted and they bring back a lot of memories for many people who live or have lived in Arjeplog.

Delayed Ice tracks.. cont’d from page 1

Lars Sundström, IceMakers said that they are hoping to have some small ice tracks ready for their customers by the end of this week. He explained that the various characteristics of the lakes aff ect the preparation of the tracks. For example, where the lake is shallow and sheltered the ice forms much quicker than in deep open water.

Diff erent strategies are applied in order to try and speed up the forming of strong ice, so that the tracks can be prepared. Håkan Ederlöv at Revi adopted a technique which involved drilling thousands of holes in the ice. It was his father Bengt’s idea and seems to have worked well. From next week his customers will be able to test on the ice tracks. Until now they have only been able to test on land tracks.

Håkan said that they do not keep secrets from the other compa-nies but not everyone believed that this method would work.
